Prayer Flags are of Tibetan Buddhist origin. Prayer flags traditionally include woodblock-printed text and images and are used to promote peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom. The Tibetans believe the prayers represented on the flags will be blown by the wind and as the images fade and the flags deteriorate the good intentions and desires of the flag-hangers will be spread out into the world.
For five of the seven flags I carved 5 linoleum blocks representing three popular pollinators and a few of their favorite plants. They are a monarch caterpillar, milkweed, a bee and some blossoms, a hummingbird and hollyhocks. Then using antique letterpress letters I printed two more flags to spell out POWER TO THE POLLINATORS. They are printed by hand on recycled cotton.

This is a Polaroid print of my first Motorola radio. It was a 1960s P23AAC packset. I think it was purchased mail order from Mann Electronics somewhere in Los Angeles County. It was in surprisingly good shape.
Police detectives saw me with this and took it away from me. They were 100% certain I'd stolen it. Sometimes I got detained for a while. I recall being locked in a windowless interview room at the police station for maybe an hour. When it came back clear, they were sure it was unreported. They talked to the police radio techs and called around. Eventually, they relented and gave it back to me. You can see the serial number plate under the handset in the photo. This went on for a few decades with other Motorola portable radios. They'd confiscate the thing then be astounded when it was discovered to be legitimately purchased. A peace officer who was not involved in taking away the radios told me, "I'm surprised they gave it back to you. I thought you'd never see it again. They're supposed to give you a property receipt." They hadn't. Apparently there are some honest people in law enforcement.
These had peanut tubes and I think a 1-watt transmitter power. They took a pair of 67.5-volt dry cell batteries, which are impossible to find, and (I think) two filament batteries. If I wanted to get one of these to work today, I'd buy 14, 9V lithium batteries and put at least two strings of 7 in series for 63 volts. There was a rechargeable nickel-cadmium wet cell option which this did not have. The NiCd was 12 volts and very heavy. They ran a DC-DC inverter to get high voltage for the tubes.
Transistorized! There were a couple of transistors in the audio stages and this was heavily advertised. A modern wonder.
This was purchased to experiment and learn. What I was surprised to learn almost immediately was: there is no speaker on this thing. For cryin' out loud, how're you supposed to listen for a radio call from dispatch? I guess you walk around with the handset glued to your ear. (Like a modern phone?) I never did anything useful with this but it looked cool and I learned some things. In a museum, I saw that a short-line railroad that used these speaker-less radios. I later bought a 5-watt transmitter model in order to get one with a speaker. It had four, 45-volt dry cells and a 2E24 power amplifier tube.
No idea what channel this had installed. Except for the "F63" stencil and the crystal frequencies, there was no clue of who owned this before Mann bought it.

These are just two mid-range Android handsets that have been scaled down to carry its brand and innovation forward to a wider user-base. There is no doubt that cramming a wealth of high-end specs into a more affordable package is an appealing proposition to users on a budget.

Laid out to dry is a Christmas card headed to family this week. I've used a new border cast by Sky Shipley, and two sizes of Solemnis, the larger cast by Theo Rehak at Dale Guild. The dark green, which was lightened for the border, printed horribly on the 10 Punkt type, and had to be imprinted twice on each card in order to cover properly. Amazingly all the cards registered - I don't think that has ever happened before. The card was printed on an Adana 8" x 5" tabletop platen press.

Mobile phones are everywhere in Pyongyang! Subscriptions are paid every three months, and cost about 5 Euros a month, which includes 150 sms and 150 calls.
The down side: the telephones (made in China) are sold for around 200 Euros! But even at that price, they are sold easily. The network is 3G, but international calls, web or WAP surfing are blocked.
The mobile phone is often the only way for families to get news from their sons away on military service (which lasts several years) and distant friends. To understand the importance of telecommunications nowadays, all you need to do is look at the city nightline, the only lit up buildings are the Juche Tower, the statue of Kim Il Sung… and the Telecom building!

The style/stigma has retained its original color).

A Western Electric Princess telephone in all its lighted dial glory. When the handset is on hook the light dims for a night light, or can be switched off.
This Princess, a modular model 702BM in beige which came from my parent's house, is still in service on my bedside table. It is the older version with the dial light powered by a plug in transformer, newer ones had line powered LED dial lights.
When the Princess phone was introduced in 1959, the Bell System promoted it with ads proclaiming
"It's Little!...It's Lovely!...It Lights!".

A very contemporary take on the telephone in 1934 - and the basis of the 'standard' GPO telephone for many years. The Liverpool based Automatic Electric Co Ltd, also known under the tradname of 'ATM' made many phone and exchange components as well as the control systems for signalling and traffic signals. The 'Strowger' in the works name refers to Almon Brown Strowger (1839 - 1902) who developed the basis of automatic telephone exchanges and who helped form the Automatic Electric Company in the USA in 1901.
