While sorting the bin of type the pile of 10 point Stymie turned into a pyramid. I'm amazed that I didn't knock it down with a stray finger or elbow. Living in earthquake country I believe that I'm tempting fate.

Soldiers of 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (1RRF) have handed over control of Check Point Abpashak East to the Afghan security forces.

CP Abpashak East becomes the latest checkpoint in the Nahr-e Saraj district to be handed over to the Afghan Uniformed Police (AUP) as they continue to grow in strength.

The Fusiliers have been deployed in the district since March, operating in support of their Afghan partners along the Helmand River valley, the key route Highway One and the Nahr-e Bugra (NEB) Canal.

The checkpoint, which has been home to around 30 Fusiliers, was handed over following a full inspection of the site by the Royal Engineers.

as i've recently received quite a few queries about using iPhones in Korea, i thought i should make a post about it.

2G iPhones like this one can't make calls in Korea

but

i think 3G versions can as roaming phones from overseas

not as local handsets.

iPhones lack WIPI (Wireless Internet Platform for Interoperability),

a Korean mobile phone software platfom...see article below.

i use mine as a phone overseas and

in Korea, for email, web, its calender, videos, photo album, camera, microphone, notes etc. a near perfect PDA for me.

IT Regulation Prevents Korean Access to iPhone

By Cho Jin-seo

Korea Times

06-10-2008 18:43

Korea's isolation in the global IT business was reaffirmed when Steve Jobs announced that the new iPhone will be ``affordable for almost everyone'' in the world ― but not here.

``We're going to be rolling out in 70 countries over the next several months. We are really thrilled with this,'' the Apple CEO said to the tune of the Disney song ``It's a small world.'' ``Next time you are in Malta and you need an iPhone 3G, it will be there for you.''

In the annual conference of Apple, the celebrity American CEO said that the upgraded version of iPhone will be released in 22 nations simultaneously on July 11, and in 70 nations within this year, from Portugal to India and from Japan to Madagascar.

South Korea was not mentioned during the conference. The presence of two of the world's largest mobile phone makers ― Samsung and LG ― has encouraged the government to shut its door to foreign-made mobile phones by using non-tariff barriers. Along with iPhone, the Nokia, Blackberry and Sony-Ericsson phones are virtually not allowed to be sold here.

``Korea is not ready,'' said a manager of Apple Korea Tuesday. "We have no comment on iPhone matter in Korea, also, there is no plan to release any further information about launching of iPhone in Korea"

In 2003, the government imposed a unique software platform called WIPI on mobile phones on sale, hoping that this industrial standard can save firms from unnecessary competition and overlapping investment. But as phone technologies advance, this regulation has become a stiff trade barrier for foreign makers who think it is not cost-efficient to redesign their products only for the South Korean market.

``Why is this country blocking import of foreign-made cell phones while it is allowing import of foreign beef, which should be stopped?'' a citizen said on Cetizen, the largest mobile phone community on the Internet. Most other comments were gripes about the government's protective telecom policies.

Several phone companies such as Nokia and RIM ― the maker of Blackberry smartphone _ have tried to lobby the Korean government to abolish the WIPI requirement and let them sell phones of their own design, but they have not succeeded.

Only RIM managed to get a partial approval for the sale of Blackberry phones for business users from July. The Korea Communications Commission eased the regulation last month as a token of hospitality as it is inviting RIM's CEO Jim Balsillie to Seoul for the OECD Ministerial Meeting next week, an official at Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency said.

KTF, the second largest mobile service operator in Korea, has been trying to sell iPhone in Korea. KTF's public relations official Lee Youn-joo said that there has been no advancement in their talks with Apple.

In San Francisco, Jobs showed that the new iPhone has more advanced features such as GPS map navigation, longer battery life and faster mobile Internet than the previous model he unveiled a year ago. Yet, the price for the basic model has lowered from $399 to $199, which is much lower than similar touch-sensitive smartphones from Samsung, LG and other makers.

I spent a lovely afternoon laying a good sized font of 14 punkt Jessen-Schrift that was newly cast by Sky Shipley at his Skyline Type Foundry on a 16pt body. The mats had originally been assembled by Paul Duensing, and ended up in the collection of Mike Anderson. After he died they were sold at auction to a friend in San Francisco who loaned them to Sky. He did an admirable job, but a couple of characters need better alignment. It is a quirky face without the normal points for alignment, but certainly a nice addition to my growing collection of Jessen-Schrift.

I created this around the turn of the 21st century. I never did finish the base. the figure is the handset of a phone, the hair is dryer lint and glue, the braided piece is an old cotton belt, the buffalo figure inspired this whole piece, the birds were left over from a scrapbook project, the face is from old calendar page, themetal blue feather is old earring.

In the next few photos, i explain what this sculpture is about...Adaptation and Survial.

An advert from the trade journal "Display" magazine, issued in January 1958 for the Islington, London, based concern of C F Anderson & Son Ltd, importers of timber and plywoods. This was big business for the London Docks at the time and as can be seen Anderson's supplied a wide range of materials, not just timbers. The advert is rather fun - bold, usuing the old style telephone handset, the coiled cable and the telephone number CANonbury 1212 on a sheet of timber to the side of one of the company's 17 lorries.

I captured this gent walking towards me as I was turning from taking another shot. He was on his mobile and I thought it funny that he was chewing on his tongue.
