Went to Uprising Holiday Handmade Market in Beverly today. It was cool to see all the artists and their wares today - especially this artist, Erin Doyle and her creation here. Extra points if you know him. Gary - i figure you might. This handmade creature seemed almost real. It was almost spooky how much personality was in his face was lifted up and you meet his eyes. Had to try to capture it in a photo.
'Nikolai?' Abigail's voice boomed out across the yard, finally settling on the russian man's ears as he prepared to cut up some apples for the horses's feeds.
'Yes?'
'Could you come here a moment please? Tam's loose again and David's taking the hack...I....OI! Come back here!'
Nikolai chuckled and replaced the knife and piece of fruit on the table. This wouldn't take long. Although stubborn and egotistical, Tamarind really wasn't that difficult to control...well...as long as a bribe of some kind was involved...
No sooner had he shut the door than something stirred at the back of the room. The bucket, which up until that point had been standing quietly as buckets are wont to do, now wobbled and teetered on the edge of its base, until it finally came crashing down on the hard wooden floor. There was a brief lull and then suddenly the air was filled with frantic squeaks and whistles as the rodent army moved in...
I got this cheerful little creature in a sketchy motel in Welland, ON. How I came to be at a sketchy motel in Welland is a different story altogether, but in the motel was a basket of handmade creatures like this one, all for sale. They were supposed to be "dammit dolls," as per the tag:
"When you feel you want to throw the phone
or kick the desk and shout,
here's a little dammit doll you can't do without.
Just grasp it firmly by the legs
and find a place to slam it,
and as you whack its stuffing out,
yell 'dammit, dammit, dammit!'"
Well, I am far too softhearted to take pleasure in mistreating anyone or even any thing, so I had to "rescue" at least one of them. This guy was my favorite. He's a bit sloppily sewn - perhaps on purpose, I don't know - but the other day I fixed him up a bit, so he's unlikely to come apart at the seams anytime soon.
I was calling him the "good thing" for a while because I didn't know what else to call him; it just stuck, and eventually got shortened to G.T.
