I think the reason this grasshopper was so patient with my presence and not launching itself into flight is because, from what I can see, it appears to be missing one of it's rear legs. (DSC_6743.jpg)
Being involved in Polo Photography, I learned the term Handicaps. Each player is handicapped (on a 6 chukka basis) from minus 2 up to 10 goals (the best player). The aggregate handicap of the four players is the team handicap. In handicap tournaments the number of goals start is obtained by dividing the difference between the two teams handicaps by six and multiplying by the number of chukkas to be played; any fractions count as half a goal.
Complicated isn't it.... So is the game...

Every now and then a disabled invertebrate appears on my screen, like this male Roesel's bush-cricket (Roeseliana roeselii - Greppelsprinkhaan). He misses a hind leg and fhat's quite a handicap for a grasshopper. © Tom Kisjes
This one-legged goose seems to be growing and getting along very nicely. I was concerned about it earlier in the year.
Cell door #3 in the maximum security side of the West Virginia State Penitentiary. The story I was told was that a inmate came to the prison in a wheelchair, because the maximum security side was not accessible for someone in a wheelchair he was placed in the minimum security side, after a few years of being a jerk to every employee of the prison one day the guards were fed up with him, a cutting torch and welder were dispatched to the maximum security side and the doorway was modified so as to make the cell accessible, by the end of the day he inmate was in his new residence. Rumor has it when he was released they wheeled him out the front door and he stood up from his chair, to everyones suprise he had never been handicapped at all. The Prison is now a retired, gothic style prison located in Moundsville, WV. It operated from 1876 to 1995. It closed after a riot broke out in 1988 resulting in the deaths of 3 inmates and exposing the facility to the fact that it was not designed for what had become modern day criminals.

From Dennis Learys song "I'm an asshole". I laughed so hard when I first heard this, and figured it would make a great cross stitch.

In the rich West most of handicapped people are hided away in institutions and we feel ashamed seeing them, the imperfection of nature.
Here in the South these handicapped people stay part of the society, they don't become unworldly, no they are taken care of by everyone, giving some food, a shelter at night in the doorway of shops and they even get some money for guarding these shops at night ... they still have a function in this society, at their level.
Don't forget that the most of us will be sheltered away in homes when we become old and not useful anymore to the economic society ... you would still be better of by the care and your task in a Tamil family even at old age
