The North Carolina Tar Heels, a power five program out of the Atlantic Coast Conference, dealt Old Dominion its first home defeat since November 2015. But in the loss, ODU gained a new starting quarterback.

True freshman Steven Williams, a graduate of Woodrow Wilson H.S. in Washington, D.C., replaced starting quarterback Jordan Hoy and backup QB Blake LaRussa in the 53-23 loss.

"When you don't have a first down in the first quarter and you have no energy on the sideline because the players feel it, you have to make the move," ODU head football coach Bobby Wilder explained. "I didn't go into this game thinking [Williams] would play."

Seeing his first action, the 17 year old Williams completed 9-of-20 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw an interception and lost a fumble. Williams added 34 rushing yards on seven attempts.

"We haven't developed an identity on offense," Wilder noted. "Stevie Williams today gave us an identity. Steven Williams is the quarterback of the Old Dominion football team moving forward."

"They just said 'let's go," Williams explained of how he learned he was about to receive his first college playing time. "My teammates were all behind me. I just had to go do my job and we'll be fine."

Old Dominion outscored North Carolina (1-2), 16-14, in the second half, after trailing the Tar Heels, 39-7, at the half.

Prior to the game, ODU learned All-Conference USA running back Ray Lawry, the program's all-time leading rusher, has a torn hamstring. Head coach Bobby Wilder reveals the injury could keep Lawry sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Right now, I don't want to see you, or hear you. I can't deal with anything right now. My body has just gone absolutely nuts. Every part of me is in some sort of physical pain or discomfort and to add to it, because of all of this, I haven't gotten much more than 2 hours sleep a night since Thursday last. I'm cranky, I'm angry, I'm exhausted, and everything hurts. Who does this happen to? Me apparently. TMD has unhinged my jaw-my bite is now completely off and I haven't been able to eat anything that involves actual chewing, costochondritus has caused my entire chest and ribs to feel like its on fire, Chrons has caused both my knees and elbows, and my right ankle severe arthritic pain, and has caused my left ankle to swell twice its normal size, and the cherry on top, I strained my hamstring on my right side, so add shooting debilitating pains throughout the back of my thighs and glute and now lower back. Now you imagine TRYING to get sleep like that.

I hit everything I could with some Ben Gay cold relief gel which sort of calmed down the fiery pain from the costo, I'm back on 9, yes, 9 pills a day for the Chrons, and I've been trying to load up on water to help with getting more fluids in to help out with the edema.

The Chrons stuff I'm used to, but throw in the jaw pain and the hamstring pain and it was just impossible to do anything. Due to the "temporary" basically arthritis in all my joints, I could not bend either elbow more than a few inches, my wrists would not allow any pressure on them, and my knees became so stiff and painful, it was impossible to bend down so it was like, I got real good at catching stuff before it fell to the ground because I knew if say I was trying to reach for something and it fell, I could not bend down and pick it up. The hamstring thing made that extra clear. But this made sleeping impossible. Literally I had to throw myself into the bed which hurt like hell. I figured I could only do this on my right side because lying on the left only caused my hamstring to just flare and flare. Then I had to hoist my head onto a pillow which made my jaw hurt and then tuck a blanket somehow underneath my back to give it support so I wouldn't roll over to my back. It hurt so bad that I just didn't want to go to sleep anymore. Just to get into that position and try and sleep made everything hurt. Waking up was worse because I couldn't physically lift myself out of bed. For one, the pain in my back would not allow it, and two I couldn't lift myself on my elbows or wrists so I had to slowly and I do mean slowly wriggle to the side and try my best to slowly kick my feet back onto the floor. One I got there, I would let out a slew of curses and I hurled myself upward. The pain...I cannot begin to describe. Day three of this, I attempted to sleep sitting up. I ended up waking up with two very swollen feet which then became painful to walk on. Ugh...I was losing it. I was truly losing it. I could not function worth a frick. I couldn't even brush my own hair because I couldn't get my arms above shoulder length. I called my brother, a PT in training, in tears to get some advice from him or a kind word but he was thankfully off with his wife for her birthday which I totally forgot it was the night of, but I'm glad he didn't answer b/c I would have broken down on the phone hard.

Life is testing me. It really is testing me right now. I tried at one point to look for a bright side, but I couldn't quite mentally get there.

I tore my right hamstring where it meets my knee. There was pain last week while I used my elliptical, but yesterday I stood up out of chair and it must have torn right then. Can't walk very well, can't drive. Oh well!

Eoin had endured a frustrating few months with a hamstring injury coming up to this game but was determined to make it back in time for the historic opening of the clubhouse with the President of the GAA John Horan and Leinster Council Chairman, Jim Bolger, present.

Unfortunately, Eoin suffered a knee injury in the game which required an operation and kept him out for another 12 weeks, missing the whole Intermediate Championship that he was so looking forward to playing in.

“The slow collapse of the social contract is the backdrop for a modern mania for clean eating, healthy living, personal productivity, and ‘radical self-love’—the insistence that, in spite of all evidence to the contrary, we can achieve a meaningful existence by maintaining a positive outlook, following our bliss, and doing a few hamstring stretches as the planet burns.” —Laurie Penny

Thompson Track, Te Aroha

It started as a couple of hour ride up from Te Aroha and turned into a 2 day bush bash in mud and rain.

The bikes were a Gas Gas 700SM, Honda CRF300 Adventure and my Montesa 4Ride.

The rough road up to the summit was pretty easy for all of us. Big rocks and potholes on a clay bed but no real problem. That took about 25 minutes.

Then I found a track going down the other side and we decided to follow it.

Within 500 metres was the first slip; that should have warned us off but no, we soldiered on...........and on and on a on! For hours we battled bogs, bush slips and trees.

Finally, we decided we were not going to make Katikati on the other side. The bogs were too big and the GasGas and Honda too heavy.

We turned around and started back up but the rain set in and made it harder.

We decided to leave the two heavy bikes behind and come back the next day for them. Between the three of us, we rode and hauled the little Montesa 4Ride 260cc trials based bike to the top and I rode on down to get help. On the way down, I lost the front wheel on a slippery rock, fell and tore my hamstring. It was a lot of pain but I got up and rode on.

I found a couple in town with a double cab ute who agreed to come with me to the base of the trail so we could drive the other two back to town; they finally walked out around midnight!

The next day we went back to get the bikes left behind.

I waited at the bottom with my torn hammy and acted as the emergency system just in case. The other two took my Montesa back up to cut 2-3 hours off their walk then walked into the bush to rescue the other bikes with a winch, folding spade and tree saw.

2 expert hard enduro racers had contacted me offering help so I said yes please!

They turned up abpout 2.30pm and rode in to help. Then half an hour later, 2 more riders turned up to help.

The 2nd two riders didn't go far enough to find the others and came back. They'd seen my Montesa just over the top but that was all.

By 6pm I was getting worried and ready to call emergency services (the boys had a satelite rescue device so I knew they may have set that off).

They hadn't and, just before I called emergency; they all came back down some 5 hours after entering. Our 2-3 hour adventure ride had turned into a 2 day balls out test of skill, endurance and planning. On the way up, we didn't just ride, we stopped and planned our way through every obstacle.

Nobody was hurt at all until I fell off on the way down in the rain and we all had wet weather gear and plenty of spring water.

Staying in the bush for the night would have been cold but not a life or death issue.

What a ride! What an experience a what a great bunch of people Kiwis are to drop everything, drive hundreds of km with bikes on the back to help us!

This image attempts to show how weak the hamstring muscles become on individuals who cannot use their legs. On able individuals the hamstring muscles help "cushion" when they sit. Lacking cushion muscles usually result in increased preassure on a disabled person's "sitting bone".

I really need some water here! my throat was so dry.

I'm keeping a log of my pt stuff elsewhere, but a quick synopsis of

today: 15m of e-stim, 10m on the bike with some minor resistance, leg

press (2 different exercises), some other leg-weight machine (2

exercises), foam roller, and stretches on my own (mostly quads, but also

hamstrings and piriformis).

one of my therapists also did some massage work on the outside of my

knee where the it band attaches. I had no clue how sore and painful it

was until he started working it!

I picked up some sushi and a drink at the harris teeter on my way back

to the office. a bit of a healthy-ish late lunch treat for myself, post-pt.

Using only his toe and hamstring muscles, this kid stayed alive by pushing on the rope for a good 10 seconds.

It was one of the most impressive athletic feats I've witnessed in person.

This asana helps in improving the flexibility of the hamstrings and hips and lengthens the spine. Sit up with your back straight and toes pointing outwards. Breathe in and raise your hands over your head and stretch. Now, while breathing out bring your hands down and bend then forward to touch your legs. Place your hands wherever they reach, hold your toes if you can but don’t force yourself. Breathe in and elongate your spine. While breathing out, keep your navel close to your knees.

Now this is my yoga home pose. I love few poses more than cobra. I have incredibly tight hamstrings, so every part of the sun salutation up to this point feels like a challenge and is somewhat emotionally uncomfortable the first flow. My forward fold isn't foldy. My downward dog has super bent knees. But then I get here, and I sigh. With contentment. Audibly. Every time. #curvybeloved

KIPLAGAT, Florence (KEN) - Marathon Women, 6th place, finish time 02:27:05

Kiplagat won a 5000m silver at the 2006 World Junior Championships and was fifth in the senior race at the 2007 World Cross Country Championships. After becoming a mother in 2008, she returned to win the 2009 world cross country title in Amman. Later that year she was 12th over 10,000m at the 2009 World Championships when she was struggling with a hamstring injury. Two months earlier she'd clocked 30:11.53 to finish second over 10,000m in Utrecht, erasing Linet Masai's Kenyan record. Her 5000m PB is 14:40.14. Injury prevented her defending her cross country title in 2010. In September that year she made her debut at the half marathon, clocking 67:40 in Lille. A month later she won the world half marathon title in Nanning, defeating Dire Tune in the final stages.

It's important to keep the hips down and flat against the bench while performing this exercise. Otherwise, if you raise your hips off the bench and your butt sticks up in the air, the lower back muscles kick into play and greatly lessen the work done by the hamstrings and upper thighs -- thus, defeating the purpose of the exercise.

You can go far with strong legs. It is important to do leg exercises at home because the largest muscles in the body are found in the buttocks. The leg muscles are essential for the movements we make in everyday life or in sports such as running, swimming, or bicycling. Well-trained legs not only give us a strong back and core, but also the stability we need for good athletic performance. Fortunately, effective leg exercises don't have to be complicated and don't even require a gym membership. With a bench, you can do many leg exercises at home to get stronger.

What is the purpose of leg bench training?

Leg training means burning more calories, increasing big lifts, improving mobility, and of course, increasing strength, power, and size. Leg training on the bench will focus on the anterior and posterior chains. The front chain includes the quadriceps, adductors, hip stabilizers, and the front of the calves. The posterior chain muscles are made up of the hamstrings, glutes, the back of the calves, additional hip abductors, and stabilizers.

Why are leg exercises important?

Because they often involve multiple muscles, leg exercises can be more intense than most upper body movements. Because they start slowly and the recovery period is longer and more painful, many people skip leg days.

However, if you miss a leg day too often, you can lose your balance and be more prone to injury. And you may not know that bench leg training is also vital for brain and nervous system health. Research published in Frontiers has shown that the legs send important signals to the brain that can help produce nerve cells (essential for coping with stress and adapting to challenges).

Leg workout at home (with bench)

Doing leg exercises at home is probably a lot easier than you think. You don't need a leg press or squat bar to activate your lower body muscles. All you need is your body weight, maybe a bench, and the motivation to burn some of your quads, hamstrings, glutes, calves, and inner thighs.

READ MORE HERE : www.zaneshawneecaverns.com/bench-leg-workout

These are the 4 most effective leg workouts you can do at home to get those big muscles moving with a bench.

1. Enter

Muscles worked: glutes and hamstrings

Pick one foot, push through the heel as you step onto the bench. Lift the other foot to stand on the bench. Return to the starting position by lowering one foot and then the other. Grab a dumbbell in each hand with your arms fully extended at your sides and palms facing in for increased difficulty.

2. Squat with one leg

Muscles worked: quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes

Extend your arms for balance. Roll your shoulder blades back and keep your back straight. Lift your unsupported foot off the ground and lower your hips to lightly touch the bench and straighten up.

3. Bank rest

Muscles worked: quadriceps, hamstrings, abductors, glutes

Support the bench with your hands, keeping your back straight. Push yourself off the floor and jump from one side of the sofa to the other. Land softly with your knees bent and your feet as close together as possible.

4. Bulgarian squat

Muscles worked: Thighs and glutes

Like a single-leg unilateral squat, the exercise puts more stress on the quadriceps than any other muscle in the body.

With your feet hip-width apart, lift one foot and place it on the bench. Lower your hips toward the bench so your back knee is close to the floor. Stop and cross your front heel to return to the starting position. If you find the exercise too easy, take a dumbbell in each hand with your arms fully extended at your sides and palms facing in to increase the difficulty.

How often should you train your legs?

According to research, there isn't a huge difference between training your leg muscles once a week or three times a week when you focus on building maximum muscle. What makes the biggest difference is the volume of resistance training; H how many sets and reps you do. Higher volume workouts (eg, 3 sets of 12 reps or even 4 sets of 8 reps) generally produce better results than training the same muscle group multiple times per week.

So for leg workouts at home, you can stick to the basic moves of 3 sets of 12 reps for each exercise.

Conclusion

According to a study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning, regular exercise rotation is just as effective as increasing exercise intensity. And yes, effective leg training ensures a healthy range of front and back muscles.

We could benefit a lot from training our legs on the bench. So if you enjoy it the most, please let me know in the comment section below.
