03-21-1978 in Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional, Dominican Republic. Signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1994. Cristian Antonio Guzmán is a Dominican baseball infielder who is currently a free agent. Guzmán was acquired by the Minnesota Twins in 1998 from the New York Yankees organization as part of the Chuck Knoblauch trade. In 2001, Guzmán was named to the AL All-Star team and posted career bests with 10 home runs and a .302 batting average. He was a key part of the Twins teams that won three consecutive American League Central titles from 2002-2004. While a Twin, he led the American League in triples in 2000 (20), 2001 (14) and 2003 (14). His total of 20 in 2000 was only the tenth time a player had reached that number in the last 70 years. After becoming a free agent, Guzmán signed a $16.8 million, four-year contract with the Washington Nationals for the 2005 season but then proceeded to have the worst year of his career. As the full-time shortstop, he was batting .192 at the end of August, but rallied in September, hitting .325, which helped bring his average up to .219. Three days after the disastrous 2005 season, Guzmán had eye surgery, which he credited as a prime reason for his resurgence in the following years. Guzmán was sidelined for the entire 2006 campaign with a shoulder injury and subsequent surgery, but returned in 2007 as the Nationals' starting shortstop following the trade of second baseman José Vidro to the Seattle Mariners and the move of Felipe López to second base. On March 30, 2008, Guzmán got the first hit in the history of Nationals Park, a broken bat single to right off Atlanta Braves starter Tim Hudson. He followed with the first run in the history of the park, after an RBI double by Nick Johnson. He made the NL All-Star team as the Nationals' lone representative in 2008. He ended up playing third base in the All-Star Game, and made some crucial fielding plays at that position, even though he had previously only played shortstop as a major leaguer. On August 28, 2008, Guzmán hit for the cycle against the Los Angeles Dodgers; only the second cycle in Nationals history. Guzman signed a two-year contract extension to stay with the Nats. He finished the 2008 season as 4th the league in hits and batting average by the all-star break in 2009, he was fourth among active players for triples. On July 31, 2010, the Texas Rangers acquired Guzmán from the Nationals for two minor leaguers. Guzmán signed a minor league contract with the Cleveland Indians on February 21, 2012. After suffering a strained hamstring during spring training, he was released by the Indians on March 28. His career stats:1999 – 2004 Minnesota Twins; 2005 – 2010 Washington Nationals; 2010 Texas Rangers. Career stats: 11 seasons: G:1406 / AB:5382 / R:727 / H:1459 / HR:62 / RBI:467 / BA:0.271. Final Game: September 8, 2010 (current stats as summer 2012).

Goals from Charlie Austin and Jake Hesketh saw Palace’s interest in the EFL Cup end at the third round as they were beaten at St Mary’s. On a disappointing night for the Eagles, their exit at the hands of the Saints was compounded by Scott Dann being forced off injured early in proceedings, before Austin fired home a penalty just after the half-hour mark. After Wayne Hennessey had helped his side stay in the tie by making a number of saves, he was beaten for a second time when Hesketh netted a rebound after another such stop by the Welshman and saw Saints gain cup revenge over the Eagles, who had won at the venue twice in the FA Cup in successive seasons. A cagey start saw little in the way of goalmouth action until the 12th minute when Connor Wickham saw a header from a corner deflect wide off Jose Fonte, but the Eagles suffered a major blow four minutes later when Dann, on the occasion of his 100th appearance for Palace, pulled up chasing a through-ball by Cuco Martina and limped from the field with a suspected hamstring strain. The bad news kept coming the visitors’ way though when on 32 minutes the Saints were awarded a penalty. Another dangerous ball into space by Martina allowed Shane Long to dart onto the end of it, and Dann’s replacement Martin Kelly’s attempt at a tackle brought the Republic of Ireland striker down in the box, allowing Austin to coolly slide the ball in the opposite direction to Hennessey’s dive from 12 yards to score his fourth goal in seven days. Boosted by being in possession of the lead, Southampton began to dominate proceedings and two minutes later the Welsh goalie was called into action again when he managed to claw a header from Hesketh away from his bottom corner following Matt Targett’s cross, and Austin should have done better when Long scampered in front of Zeki Fryers to cut the ball back into his strike partner’s path but the goalscorer shanked his half-volley horridly off target. There was a brief respite for Palace when Yohan Cabaye curled an effort just wide, but the Saints went straight up the other end and the dangerous Austin found himself in on goal again when Hesketh’s precise pass allowed him to escape behind the backline, but Hennessey’s outstretched hand brilliantly denied him his brace, and a minute later Martina was next to try his luck but shot narrowly wide from a tight angle. In first half stoppage time it was so nearly 2-0 when yet again another pass into space saw the pacey Long get on the end of it and round Hennessey, but his attempted at finding the empty net lacked the required strength and Damien Delaney managed to scramble back and hook the ball away from danger as the visitors escaped into the break just the one goal behind. However on 64 minutes the second did arrive. Having quietened the hosts after the restart, Southampton suddenly sprung into life when James Ward-Prowse was allowed to bring the ball into the Eagles’ half and once again utilised Long’s pace. The striker drifted in behind Joel Ward and got a shot away, which was well saved by Hennessey but the rebound came to Hesketh who drilled home his maiden career goal, allowing him to celebrate for the first time. The game petered out as a contest at that point, although Hennessey made another smart stop to add to his collection when he got down to tip away a bending attempt by substitute Nathan Redmond as the Saints marched on to round four. Southampton: McCarthy, Martina, Yoshida, Fonte, Targett, Clasie, Ward-Prowse, Reed, Hesketh (Hojbjerg 77), Austin (Redmond 57), Long (Tadic 88). Subs not used: Lewis, Stephens, Soares, Davis. Palace: Hennessey, Ward, Dann (Kelly 19), Delaney, Fryers, Cabaye, Mutch (Puncheon 69), Sako (C. Benteke 64), Lee, Zaha, Wickham. Subs not used: Speroni, Flamini, Townsend, Campbell. Let's block ads! We kick off our EFL Cup campaign against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night and ahead of the game, Rob Kelly spoke to Arsène Wenger for our preview: THE QUOTE “The confidence level has been rebuilt and now we have to show that we can maintain our focus and the consistency in our concentration. That is what is at stake.” - Arsène Wenger THE PREVIEW While much of the pre-match build-up has centred on Arsène Wenger’s former protégé, Nicklas Bendtner, the Arsenal manager’s attention has been trained on his current crop of rising stars. The EFL Cup may not boast the glamour and glitz of the Champions League or Premier League, but it has been an important testing ground over the course of the Frenchman’s 20-year reign. Opta Facts We have won our last three matches against Nottingham Forest, beating them in the Premier League in 1997, 1998 and 1999On the two occasions the clubs have met in the League Cup, Arsenal have gone on to lift the trophy - in 1987 and 1993 Wenger may not have won this competition before, but it has offered genuine value to him as he has blooded future stars for the first time, from Fabregas and Wilshere in the past, to Bellerin and Iwobi in more recent times. Such is the strength of his squad that the boss could rotate for the trip to the City Ground and still name a team full of internationals, but he expects to field a handful of youngsters on Tuesday evening. Having won three straight Premier League games (with a creditable draw in Paris sandwiched in between), Wenger is keen to continue to build up a head of steam, no matter who is on the teamsheet in Nottingham. Team news Nottingham Forest: Perquis (groin), Assombalonga (hamstring - doubt), Lam (leg)Arsenal: Giroud (toe), Ramsey (hamstring), Welbeck (knee), Mertesacker (knee), Jenkinson (knee) “We will have a team with experience but I will also give a chance to two or three young players. But overall it is basically a first-team squad,” Wenger told Arsenal Player. “The confidence level has been rebuilt and now we have to show that we can maintain our focus and the consistency in our concentration. That is what is at stake. “This is an interesting cup competition. It gives games to all the members of the squad and when it gets to the later stages it gets passionate, so you have to survive in the first rounds. “That will not be easy for us, but we want to maintain our winning streak. This is an opportunity to give everyone good competition and also we have a chance to win a trophy, so we want to combine the two.” ONE TO WATCH While Shkodran Mustafi has been thrown straight into the fray since his arrival last month, fellow new boy Lucas has had to be a bit more patient. The Spanish forward made his debut in the Premier League win against Southampton, but was benched for the away game at Paris Saint-Germain and came on for the final three minutes of the win at Hull on Saturday. Wenger is carefully easing in his new forward, but the 28-year-old is expected to play a part at the City Ground and the manager believes he will thrive in England. Lucas Perez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain “When you see the games, you can see the intensity is total and it takes you a little while sometimes to adjust to that,” he said. “All the players that we bought this season have top quality and have the right attitude. “I believe that in training Lucas shows the quality to integrate into our squad and this is a job where you have to be focused and maintain your desire no matter what happens to you. “Sometimes it comes quick, sometimes you have to wait and at the moment he shows us the quality. If he maintains that he will get his chance.” THE OPPOSITION While much has been made of the reunion between Arsenal and Bendtner, there are two more former Gunners in the Forest ranks who may well have a point to prove. Henri Lansbury and Armand Traore could both line up against their old club on Tuesday evening, and Wenger is wary of the threat both them and their team-mates will pose to his side. Catch the #NFFCvAFC Matchday Show “Armand has fantastic power and pace, and has a good mentality,” the manager said. “He started here, I took him from Paris and he has had a good career. Henri as well has had a big impact. “He had big potential, because he has a good eye to get into the box, a good eye for goal and he is a hard worker and a focused and motivated player. He had many injuries when he was here and that was detrimental to his career. “Henri is a real Arsenal man, and all three still made big careers. They did not do it for us, but what is the most important thing at the end of the day is that these guys all to express their talent and can have satisfaction in their job. “I saw Forest against Aston Villa, they were in trouble and came back and got a draw and played a very convincing game,” he added. “They look to be ready, they look to be up for the fight and when they were in trouble, they were able to come back against a team with the quality of Aston Villa. That means they are a very serious side.” QUIZ More quizzes and polls to follow soon Copyright 2016 The Arsenal Football Club plc. Ole Miss baseball head coach Mike Bianco spoke with the media Monday afternoon at baseball media day to discuss his team as they prepare for their season opener. The No. 13 Rebels open the season Friday with a three-game series against No. 14 TCU. The opening of Ole Miss baseball season is just days away, when the No. 13 Rebels welcome No. 14 TCU for a three-game series. First pitch for Friday’s season opener is set for 4 p.m. from Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Head coach Mike Bianco is excited to get things underway. “It’s obviously an exciting time of the year for us with opening day less than a week away,” Bianco said. “The kids have been going at it since late August, since they stepped on campus. We had a tremendous fall and really good early spring, but they’re ready to play somebody in a different uniform.” Ole Miss ended last season with two consecutive losses to the Horned Frogs in the championship of the College Station, Texas, regional. The Rebels have six position starters returning this year in addition to their Friday and Saturday starters and closer. Bianco said he believes that returning experience will not make a big difference as the Rebels go through a tough non-conference schedule, which includes the series with TCU, a three-game series at Florida International, neutral-site games against Mississippi State and Southern Miss and a road game at Southern Miss, and SEC play. That experience will also come in handy during NCAA Tournament time. “Last year’s team lacked an identity, but this year’s team, certainly, has that identity.” Bianco said. “We have as much experience as much as I can remember on both sides of the ball.” On the mound, junior right-handers Bobby Wahl and Mike Mayers provide one of the best one-two punches in the country, but Ole Miss needs someone to be a consistent starter on Sundays to reach the Rebels’ full potential. Bianco announced Monday that sophomore right-hander Chris Ellis will get the nod against the Horned Frogs and said the Birmingham, Ala., native had a good fall that set him apart from the competition. “Since Chris got back (from summer ball), he’s different,” Bianco said. “He walks around like an SEC starter, and certainly, he’s always had the stuff. The stuff has always been in him, you just never know when it’s going to come out.” Ellis was 4-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 31.2 innings of work this past season. At the plate, Ole Miss lost Alex Yarbrough, Matt Snyder and Zach Kirksey, but hitting coach Cliff Godwin feels this year’s squad will fill that hole. “This offense has much more dynamics to it,” Godwin said. “We’ve got guys that can run, but we’ve also got guys that can hit the ball in the gap and hit it out of the yard." The Rebels will be led by senior left fielder Tanner Mathis and sophomore center fielder Auston Bousfield. Mathis is the leading returner at the plate. This past season, he hit .359 with 23 RBI and also had eight stolen bases, which led the team, and Godwin said Mathis is the catalyst for making the offense go. “As far as being blue-collar, hard-nosed, he’s my type of guy,” Godwin said. “When other teams face him, they hate that guy. He just spreads that throughout the team in a positive way.” Bousfield could be a player that really comes into his own this season. As a freshman, he hit .281 with 22 RBI and two home runs, but in the fall and spring, he was one of the most impressive batters. Wahl said he hates facing Bousfield in practice and scrimmages because he doesn’t swing at a bad pitch and is “just a tough out.” “He’s just stronger,” Godwin said of Bousfield. “He’s a lot stronger than when he stepped on campus. The other thing is experience. He’s played every day in SEC play as a freshman and played center field. When you can do that, the experience you take away and have success as freshman, he’s just more confident.” Two newcomers will also look to play big roles for Ole Miss. Junior college transfer Stuart Turner will man the duties behind the plate, while junior college transfer Lance Wilson gets the starting nod at second base. Bianco said Turner is known for his defense but could also provide a big bat in the Rebel lineup. Junior Will Allen and sophomore Sikes Orvis will both get playing time at first base, with the other most likely filling the designated hitter spot. On the left side of the infield, senior Andrew Mistone returns at third base, while junior Austin Anderson looks to be the everyday guy at shortstop. Godwin looks for Anderson to have a breakout year at the plate. “He was one of the better hitters on our team last year, and his numbers didn’t show for it,” Godwin said. “He led our team in hitting in the fall. He’s been nagged by a little hamstring injury in the preseason, but has still swung the bat really good. He’s just much more confident.” In the outfield, Bousfield and Mathis will be the everyday starters in center and left field, respectively, while junior Preston Overbey and sophomore Will Jamison will split time in right field. Sunny.

Hot.

Arid.

Polluted.

Sh't.

The sun was strong, beating brightly at the starting line. I sat down to shade myself within a packed forest of men; a few minutes later, however, after the jocular pleading of another competitor, I was up again, and the sun hammered me mercilessly.

I hit the first wall at the 3km mark. My mouth was dry, and my pace slackened; I longed for a drink to ease my malaise.

At first blush, I survived the first 5km in good shape, turning around at 20:30, on pace to break last year's mark of 44:00. But I could feel my energy ebbing from me; and the heat exhaustion was now creeping in, its onset tiring my mind and body.

As I drank three cups of water at the 7km mark, I became incontinent, a first for me. Pouring water into my mouth at the station transformed my little man into a leaky faucet, drip, drip, drip. For the rest of the race, I would urinate, uncontrollably, a splash here and a splash there. Though no one else noticed my loss of bodily control, I felt embarrassed; and alarmed since, it was obvious now, heat exhaustion owned me - I could neither retain water nor sweat properly.

I re-injured my left hamstring around the 8km mark; the elements and my own body double-teamed me; my muscles were gassed and my gait faltered; my hamstring screamed. It's not a coincidence, I conjecture, that my last two races on this course have resulted in straining my left hamstring. Perhaps the course is too straight, and too flat for my body, forcing my left leg to incur repetitive stress and shock. I don't re-incur this injury on hilly courses, much to my amazement since I originally received this injury on the undulating China Coast Marathon route.

I walked a bit, and ran at times over the last 2km; people were passing me left and right. Yet I put up a fight at the very end, sprinting to the finish. I thank God that my hamstring did not dash itself further.

And then the surprise came. After a convalescent half hour laying underneath the trees, my body splayed on the cool bricks, I capriciously checked the final results. My jaw dropped upon my second glance. Though I had been put through a torturous physical wringer, even as my mind and body continued to twist and to burn, I had, indeed, placed in my race category!

My euphoria reminded me of the ending to My Sassy Girl in which the crestfallen couple break apart, it seems, never to be together again; only to pull off the miraculous, superman-comeback-reunion to the audience's smiles and cheers as the credits roll. I was stupefied at my success - what the F!?

I grabbed my precious hardware and had my picture taken. I went home, showered, and went to HKU where I languidly labored to walk, to eat and to talk; it's the evening now, and my exhaustion has lifted, just enough for me to finish this entry and to consider how I shall rehabilitate this obstinate left hamstring.

in preparation for the eventual end of XP and me not wanting to build a whole new machine for whatever benefits vista is supposed to have when it ships on the 12th of never, i've installed kubuntu on my laptop. it's a good way to play around and learn how to use the OS, and if there's something i can't do that i have to do right at that moment, i can always boot into XP. i've been using it for a couple of weeks now, off and on, and i feel pretty comfortable in it. installing apps hasn't been a problem, even when i have to compile from source.

i'm eagerly awaiting the dapper drake release though, for a few significant reasons: 1) new linux kernel that has complete built in support for my wifi card, so i won't keep dropping connections and so the LED indicator lights will work (it's the little things...), and 2) WPA support so i can use my secured home network rather than the wide open one i have for guests. not being able to access samba shares on my windows desktop is really hamstringing me in certain things, such as getting firefox configured to my liking. i would much rather import my existing profile/extensions/themes rather than try to recreate it. anyway, dapper drake is only a couple of months away so it's not a big deal.

i need to figure out how to get Canon's Digital Photo Professional and EOS Viewer running under WINE, if that's possible. i know picasa runs under WINE so that won't be a problem. and of course GIMP and Inkscape are already running, so that rounds out the graphics apps i depend on. i'm using open source on windows already for practically everything else, so the transition should be smooth.

by the time XP is truly dead, linux development will have advanced so far as to make vista completely unnecessary for me, for both laptop and desktop.

OMTimes Magazine & SACREDspace Yoga :

Pose of the Month March 2011

An inversion pose such as the downward facing dog causes a temporary increase in blood circulation to the head. This increased blood flow triggers the body's calming mechanism, which slows the heart rate and respiration. Initiate the downward dog by balancing with your hands and knees on the ground. Your knees should be directly underneath your hips, while your hands should sit just in front of your shoulders. On an inhale, straighten your legs and lift your sit bones toward the ceiling. Allow your entire body to stretch away from the ground; your body should look like a triangle. Hold the pose for one to three minutes.

The Practice

The preparatory position is with the hands and knees on the floor, hands under the shoulders, fingers spread wide, knees under the hips and typically about seven inches (17 cm) apart, with the spine straightened and relaxed.

On a deep exhale, the hips are pushed toward the ceiling, the body forming an inverted V-shape, with an arch in the back. The legs and arms are straight, the elbows engaged, the shoulders wide and relaxed. The heels move toward the floor. The hands and feet remain hip-width apart. If the hamstrings are very strong or tight, the knees are bent to allow the spine to lengthen fully.

Stress on the wrists is reduced by pressing down with the fingers and borders of the palms, and pushing the hips up and backwards. The head drops slightly. The heart moves toward the back.

The hips move up and back. Focus is on the breath while holding the posture, with deep, steady inhalation and exhalation creating a flow of energy through the body. On an exhale, the practitioner releases onto the hands and knees and rests.

BKS Iyengar asserts that this posture stretches the shoulders, legs, spine and whole body; builds strength throughout the body, particularly the arms, legs, and feet; relieves fatigue and rejuvenates the body; improves the immune system, digestion and blood flow to the sinuses, and calms the mind and lifts the spirits.

This posture is not recommended if the wrists are sensitive or injured. A modified posture may be appropriate, such as placing the hands against a wall rather than the floor.

Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend) is a foundational pose that many yoga practitioners breeze past. But extending the top half of the body over the seated lower half helps stretch the entire back of you body to enhance your physical flexibility. Folding inward in this way also brings mental calm.

Pose benefits

In addition to calming your mind and relieving stress, this pose stretches your spine, shoulders and hamstrings. This posture also stimulates the liver, kidneys, ovaries and uterus—and can help improve digestion.

[edit] 2003 season

Infante entered the 2003 season as the starting shortstop for the Detroit Tigers. Ramón Santiago, considered a better glove-man started the season at second base. Considered 2 of the Tigers better prospects, both proved overmatched; Infante hit only .222 with 0 home runs and 8 RBI in over 200 at-bats. Midway through the season, Tigers manager Alan Trammell sent Infante to the minor leagues for failiing to hustle on a consistent basis. Santiago switched to shortstop after Infante was sent down.

[edit] 2004 season

In 2004, Infante lost any chance to claim the starting shortstop role when the Tigers acquired Carlos Guillén, who went on to be an All-Star that year (Ramón Santiago had been included in the trade for Guillén) . With Guillén at shortstop and free agent acquisition Fernando Viña at second base, Infante was likely to spend much of the season in the minors. Then he received an opportunity in mid-May to play every day at second base when Viña was sidelined for the year by a hamstring injury. He responded by playing solid defense and hitting .264 with 16 home runs and 55 RBI in 142 games.

[edit] 2005 season

Infante's rebound in 2004 fueled speculation that he may one day become a star at second base. In 2005, however, he regressed, and the Tigers sought his replacement. In June of that year, the Tigers traded for Plácido Polanco, who had been filling a utility role with the Philadelphia Phillies. Polanco became the starting second baseman, and Infante moved to the bench.

[edit] 2006 and 2007

Following his move to the bench, Infante became a valuable asset as a backup infielder and outfielder. He proved his versatility by filling in at 7 different positions during the 2007 season. Infante also displayed the best offensive numbers of his career.

[edit] 2008

On November 12, 2007 Infante was traded to the Chicago Cubs for Jacque Jones.

On December 4, 2007 Infante was traded again, this time along with Will Ohman to the Atlanta Braves for Jose Ascanio. A Cub for less than a month during the off-season, Infante never appeared in a game.

[edit] 2009

On January 12, 2008 Infante signed a two-year contract worth 4.3 million with the Atlanta Braves.[1]

[edit] 2010

National League manager Charlie Manuel selected Infante to the 2010 National League All-Star Team, earning Infante his first selection after proving to be one of the most valuable utility men in the National League. Infante was one of six Braves on the All-Star team.

Many a pulled hamstring awaits the over-enthusiastic fliers.

The North Carolina Tar Heels, a power five program out of the Atlantic Coast Conference, dealt Old Dominion its first home defeat since November 2015. But in the loss, ODU gained a new starting quarterback.

True freshman Steven Williams, a graduate of Woodrow Wilson H.S. in Washington, D.C., replaced starting quarterback Jordan Hoy and backup QB Blake LaRussa in the 53-23 loss.

"When you don't have a first down in the first quarter and you have no energy on the sideline because the players feel it, you have to make the move," ODU head football coach Bobby Wilder explained. "I didn't go into this game thinking [Williams] would play."

Seeing his first action, the 17 year old Williams completed 9-of-20 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw an interception and lost a fumble. Williams added 34 rushing yards on seven attempts.

"We haven't developed an identity on offense," Wilder noted. "Stevie Williams today gave us an identity. Steven Williams is the quarterback of the Old Dominion football team moving forward."

"They just said 'let's go," Williams explained of how he learned he was about to receive his first college playing time. "My teammates were all behind me. I just had to go do my job and we'll be fine."

Old Dominion outscored North Carolina (1-2), 16-14, in the second half, after trailing the Tar Heels, 39-7, at the half.

Prior to the game, ODU learned All-Conference USA running back Ray Lawry, the program's all-time leading rusher, has a torn hamstring. Head coach Bobby Wilder reveals the injury could keep Lawry sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Bow legs & Knock knees are a condition in which the shape of the legs is distorted and very noticeable from a distance. tinyurl.com/y95mewb6

The person tends to have a peculiar gait and this is quite often accompanied by joint pain. The knees and ankles of bow legs sufferers never come close to each other, no matter how straight they stand with their feet together. This not only causes their knees to weaken, but can also lead to them turning inward. All of this makes physical activity and outdoor sports very difficult. In many cases, especially the severe ones, bow legs patients tend to opt for surgical intervention to correct this condition. However, surgery is not always everyone's first choice.

The knee muscles help in supporting the knee joint, and the core muscles present in the abdominal region are vital for posture and balance. Strengthening these muscles will not only help the knee joint but will also take away some of the unnecessary load on the joint by correcting posture and balance. We've put some of these useful exercises below...

Curling the Hamstring muscle

You'll need to hold on to some furniture that can provide you with reliable support for this exercise, such as a chair. Then, with the left arm taking support of the chair, raise the heel of the right leg towards the buttocks until the knee forms an angle of around 90°. Hold this position for around 15 seconds and release. Repeat this process one more time with the same leg, and then move over to the next leg, balancing oneself with the other hand. Do this around 5 times with each leg, to begin with.

Sitting against the wall

Face away from a wall, with your back flat against its surface, and toes pointing forwards. Take around 2 steps away from the wall, and then bend your knees while allowing your entire back to push against the wall. You should now feel as if you were sitting in an invisible chair, maintaining the position for around 1 minute. Return to the starting position, repeating the exercise immediately, and twice more during the day.

Stepping up a gradient

Find a stair or platform six inches above ground level and place the left foot on this six-inch elevation. Push your body up while straightening your left leg, so that the right leg is dangling for at least 3 seconds above ground. Repeat the same routine with the other leg, and do the whole exercise twice, repeating it thrice a day, to start off with. tinyurl.com/y95mewb6

Squats on one leg

Stand up straight, using your left hand to support yourself against a wall or chair. Bending your right knee, lift your right leg above the ground, with your toes pointing downwards. Then, slowly crouch down as much as possible, bending the knee of the left leg as if about to sit in a chair. Please ensure that the position of your left knee does not fall beyond that of the toes. Repeat this at least twice, and then move on to the other leg.

Old Cranleighan HC Hamstrings 3-3 Surbiton, October 16th 2021

A classical batsman with a wide range of shots and seemingly all the time in the world to play them, Martin Crowe came from a cricketing family - his father had played in the first-class game and brother Jeff represented New Zealand - and made his Test debut aged 19, quickly being tagged with the label of best young batsman in the world. He broke a series of record, despite being blighted by injuries which included a broken shin, back trouble, torn hamstrings and in latter years, serious knee injuries.

With Richard Hadlee, Crowe was at the heart of a New Zealand side which enjoyed considerable success in the 1980s After an excellent season at Somerset in 1984, he was lured back to lead the side in 1987. But it followed the departure of Viv Richards, Joel Garner and Ian Botham, and the spell there was not happy and was also blighted by some barbed media coverage of his private life.

Hadlee's retirement only served to increase the pressure on him, but in 1994 he led the line, almost hobbling at times, with 380 runs in three Tests against England. He carried on for another 18 months but the final few Tests were too much for his crumbling body.

After retiring, he took up as a commentator with Sky in New Zealand as well as heading their cricket coverage behind the scenes. He was also the man who came up with Cricket Max, for a time a success in New Zealand but a format which never caught on elsewhere.

Several elephants in Zakouma's main herd have been fitted with tracking collars so that the herd's location can be established at all times in order to protect them from poachers. Having first established their location from the air Zakouma National Park Director Rian Labuschagne attempts to pick up their signal from the ground.

For roughly 6 months of the year between June and November Zakouma National Park is almost entirely inundated with floodwaters at this time elephants would often disperse into the surrounding area of what is now the Salamat Faunal Reserve. During this time Arab horsemen from the Darfur region of neighbouring Sudan would come to hunt the elephants as they had done for perhaps several hundred years. Traditionally a group of up to 20 horsemen armed with lances would charge a herd aiming to separate out one of the elephants. A single horseman would then ride in front of this elephant to draw its attention and get it to pursue him allowing the other men to ride in and spear it from behind with their lances. They would aim for the elephant’s hamstrings in its hind legs which if severed would bring the animal down and ensure it could not get up again. Huge numbers of elephants were killed this way and in response the surviving herds in the region have learned that at the first sign of horsemen their best defence is bunch up into tight groups to ensure that no individual can be separated out.

Today this is no defence the horsemen are Janjaweed militiamen and members of the Sudanese armed forces and they come not with the lances used by their ancestors but with AK47s, belt-fed machine guns and rocket propelled grenades. This habit of bunching up into a single large herd has meant that the poachers can easily kill 50-60 elephants in a single attack by simply machine gunning the terrified animals as they try to escape. In 2005 an aerial count found 3,885 elephants in Zakouma and the surrounding area in under a decade the population was reduced to just 430 and had stopped breeding due to the constant stress. Since African Parks took over Zakouma the poaching has been almost entirely stopped and the elephants are breeding again the population now stands at around 470.

After so many years of poaching most of Zakouma's elephants still generally stick together in a single big herd and often keep to the thick bush making them difficult to find.

A bin man swaps steel-toed boots for stilettos to chase his dream of becoming a drag queen. But will he overcome the cost of living crisis, an anti-woke boyfriend and inflexible hamstrings on his quest to be crowned Miss Stoke? Living in a small Northern town, the show begins as Wasteman’s relationship ends. As he makes something fabulous in the most un-fabulous of situations, expect triple threat talent, raucous laughs and lightning fast wig changes as he prepares for the competition in just four weeks, all while fleeing from the ghosts of his past.

Inspired by my real-life experiences working as a Refuse Loader during lockdown, this ‘drag oddysey’ is a love letter to hard-working Northerners and gender euphoria expressed through monologue, music, and drag. During the pandemic, I applied for every job available. In need of a career that would not be halted due to lockdown, I turned to refuse collection. To remain creative, I started to entertain my friends by hosting drag quizzes on Zoom as ‘Mariah Scary’. And so, the journey from bin-man to drag queen began.

The show has has since enjoyed a sell-out run at the Vault Festival and has been nominated for four awards, including two West End ‘Offies’. It is previewing at the Brighton Fringe before going up to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as a recipient of the prestigious Keep It Fringe Fund funded by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

As a young person born up North, I didn't get to see any stories about where I was from. And as a young queer person from a land far beyond London, stories about towns and lives like mine were non- existent. For this reason, I am over the moon to be bringing Wasteman to the Greater Manchestre Fringe. I believe that stories about gender expression are particularly necessary in the current climate. The piece fuses my passions for monologue, character-comedy, drag, musical theatre, and unusual day jobs.

Elephants very quickly learn where they're safe and where they're not, this bull is one of a small group that hang around the Zakouma HQ area during the dry season. After everything that these elephant's have been through it's remarkable that any of them are willing to trust humans at all. However they are such intelligent animals that not only do they know where there safe but they also know who their friends are and these bulls that come to the Park Director Rian Labuschagne's house have learned to take water from a garden hosepipe.

08-11-1984; Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic. Signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 2001. Melky Astacio Cabrera is a Major League Baseball centerfielder. On November 13, 2001, at age 17, Cabrera was signed by the New York Yankees. In 2002, at age 18, he made his pro debut with the Yankees Rookie League affiliate in the Dominican Summer League. In 2003, he made his first minor league appearance with the High Rookie team in the NY-Penn League with the Staten Island Yankees, batting .283 with 31 RBI in 67 games. In 2004, he moved up to Single-A with the Battle Creek Yankees, hitting .333 with 16 RBI in 42 games before being promoted to the High Single-A Tampa Yankees, where he hit .288 with 51 RBI in 85 games to finish the season. In 2005, Cabrera started off with the Double-A Trenton Thunder, hitting .275 with 60 RBI in 106 games. At the end of June, he was called up to the Triple-A Columbus Clippers. On July 7, 2005, he made his major league debut. However, he only played six games before he was moved back down to Columbus. In 2006, he started the season in Columbus, but due to injuries to Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield, he became the everyday left fielder for the Yankees. During the 2009 Spring Training, Melky changed his number from #28 to #53. He changed his number because he wanted to have the same number he wore when he played Winter League. Former Yankee, Bobby Abreu wore number 53 before Cabrera changed numbers. Abreu played for the Yankees from the mid season of 2006 through 2008. On December 22, 2009, Cabrera was traded to the Atlanta Braves with Mike Dunn and pitching prospect Arodys Vizcaino for Javier Vázquez and Boone Logan. Cabrera signed a one year deal with the Braves avoiding arbitration. On December 9, 2010, Cabrera signed a one-year, contract with the Kansas City Royals. In his breakout 2011 season, Cabrera set career highs in RBIs (87), runs scored (102), stolen bases (20), home runs (18), and batting average (.305), while also finishing 4th in the American League in hits, with 201. On November 7, 2011, Melky Cabrera was traded to the San Francisco Giants for left-handed pitcher Jonathan Sánchez and minor league pitcher Ryan Verdugo. On August 15, 2012, Cabrera was suspended for 50 games without pay for testing positive for high levels of testosterone, suggesting usage of MLB-proscribed performance-enhancing drugs. He admitted using a banned substance and was forced to accept the suspension. The suspension was effective immediately, meaning that Cabrera would take no further part for the remainder of the 2012 season. The suspension would also rule him out to start the 2013 season or if the Giants play enough games in the postseason (if the team clinched). Prior to his suspension, he led the majors with 159 hits and was second in the NL with a .346 batting average. He ended his suspension-shortened season with 11 home runs, 10 triples, 60 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 18 opportunities. One of Cabrera's associates purchased a website for $10,000 and falsified its contents in a way that would have allowed Cabrera to challenge his suspension by claiming that the positive test was caused by a substance sold through that website, but MLB officials and federal investigators used forensics to trace the website back to Cabrera. At his own request, Cabrera was ruled ineligible to win the 2012 NL batting title. Cabrera signed a two-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays on November 19, 2012. In a game against the Detroit Tigers on April 9, 2013, Cabrera recorded his 1,000th career hit, a single off starter Aníbal Sánchez. Cabrera battled a sore hamstring and quadriceps muscle through the first two months of the regular season, but the injuries did not warrant time on the disabled list. Cabrera was occasionally removed from games in the later innings to rest his legs. After the 2014 season, Cabrera signed a three-year contract with the Chicago White Sox. In his first season with the White Sox in 2015, Cabrera played 158 games batting .273 with 36 doubles, 12 home runs, and 77 RBIs In his second season with the White Sox in 2016, Cabrera played 151 games batting .296 with 14 home runs. In his third year with the White Sox before being traded to the Kansas City Royals, Cabrera batted .295 with 13 home runs and 56 RBIs in 98 games. The White Sox traded Cabrera to the Royals for A. J. Puckett and Andre Davis on July 30, 2017. On April 25, 2018, Cabrera signed a minor league contract with the Cleveland Indians. On May 20, he was called up by the Indians. Cabrera was designated for assignment on June 14, cleared waivers on June 18, and elected free agency. He re-signed a minor league contract with the Indians on July 5, 2018. The Indians purchased Cabrera's contract for a second time on July 20, 2018.

I like watching the rippling of the water, with the fading sunlight glimmering off its surface.

Today was a particularly good day for my legs.

Ever since I began to run last August, four months post-surgery, I have not felt comfortable with my legs. First, due to muscular weakness from not using my legs in high impact activities for the prior five months since I sustained my knee injury, I would experience pain with every step in my left leg from knee down to my toes--anterior tibialis, calf, ankle and toes all must coordinate to absorb shock. Then, last November, as a result of increasing my intensity and still favoring my right leg when fatigued, I incurred an overuse injury in my right leg, straining my calf. It is impossible to do anything with your legs without involving your calf muscles. This has taken forever to heal, in part because every time it felt a little better, I would attempt to go for a run and re-strain it. Fantastic. Come on, cut me a break! Exhibit some patience.

Anyway, so I think it's finally feeling alright now, so I went for a run today and I don't think it hurt. Afterwards, when I was striding back and forth warming down, however, a medial hamstring tendon in the back of my left knee felt tweaked. We'll see how that goes. I have this dire fear of my knee swelling up and being in pain and losing function of my leg all over again. Such is a thing I wish to never experience ever again.

What I find discombobulating is how simple motions like running do not come naturally to my legs anymore. I have to think about each stride--how hard to push off, to lift, how I should land on my feet, where to strike down relative to the rest of my body, which muscles I need to activate to effectively shock absorb, whether each leg is doing the same thing to the same intensity... It is as if knee surgery has purged my leg of a lifetime of muscular memory.

I have ambitions. One of them is to strive for the day when my legs will function again without pain. I have been told my knee will never feel the same again, but the hope is that it will function and just feel like nothing, because that is what normal is.
