Boophone disticha or Poison bulb or Gifbol

The use of Boophone disticha in rituals (like male initiation) is often kept highly secret by initiates and traditional healers. The plant is highly toxic, and its preparation for medicinal or ritual use requires expert knowledge to avoid severe poisoning or death. Is also used for hallucination purposes.

Black bulb due to recent veld fires.

But poisonous or not, its a beautiful flower, leaves appear later. Here photographed with Pretoria in the background.

"Vision without execution is just a hallucination." Unknown.

My first two visits to Singapore were too short, so I basically opted to get photos of the amazing building of the Marina Bay Sands. However, whenever I travel I dedicate the central hours of the day to scout the cities and get ideas for future photographs. We never know if we are going to go back to a certain place, but I still like to leave in my mind images that I dream of taking some day.

This image stay in my head on the first morning I visited Singapore in August 2016. I knew that I wanted to do it at nightfall to get as much light as possible in the buildings and also include the Merlion water cannon, that is off at the AM blue hour. In addition, there had to be a factor that occurs a few days a year, the placement of a fence that prevents people from placing themselves on the steps next to the sculpture (usually places there during special events in the bay).

That day it had rained almost all afternoon, and even though the rain stopped when I set out to take the picture, the blue hour sky had no interest. That's why I waited until the night came and the light pollution filled the clouds with light, the long exposure did the rest, and I got a sky that I could mix with the photo of the previous blue hour where the lights of the city were at their best moment. This image is the execution of that vision I had some time ago.

Much to the amusement of ranger Jan (Rhino Post- and Rhino plains Camp in Kruger) who is more accustomed to people focusing on the Big 5, the only way I could capture this beauty was by lying flat on the (very wet) road. I think more pictures have been taken of me doing this than of the snail itself... :-)

Some of you know that Rexx has been through a couple mysterious illnesses this year, coupled with hallucinations and panic attacks.

Many years ago, his mother had been through a milder case of something very similar on a farm where I was renting the pasture. Back then, my vet came out and immediately said he could see the problem - morning glories covered the fence line. He asked if she had been eating them and I confirmed she had. I spent all day tearing the morning glories off of the fence and the problem was resolved.

Supposedly the seeds are a potent hallucinogen but I recall hearing that the plants eaten in large quantities can also cause the same effect. They cause stomach and intestinal upset as well which was one of Rexx's symptoms during the second round.

Rexx had more severe symptoms. I had combed the pasture, but there are so many weeds, I had no idea what might be causing his problem. I also wasn't sure someone wasn't giving him something. I had intentions of weed eating the fence line yesterday but spent time with a relative I hadn't seen in a while instead (which was a lot more fun!).

I started on the chore tonight. I usually avoid one very shady area that has a lot of poison ivy, but this time I plunged in - only to discover about twelve feet of very healthy morning glory plants in this unlikely area. I hate to destroy such beauty but between the weed eater and me, the ones within his reach are gone. I'm hoping this is a mystery solved. The secret to his illness has been revealed and I can finally relax. Right after I celebrate!

Note***** The character of Vasha is very dead and appeared as a hallucination, not a ghost.

[21:21] Rena Mayne's finger ran down the edge of the ledger, teeth grinding a bit as she tried to make the numbers into something that would resemble breaking even...the damage to the carpet, the front of the bar....it all needed fixing and with the recent upheaval, revenue wasn't what it had been. "Fucking Christ." she murmured. "...at this rate it would be more cost effective to give the damned bar to Forge."

[21:23] Aravasha Yiyuan sat primly on the table edge..." so like you Rena..just throw your hands in the air and look for some man to make everything all right " she would look at her and offer a sweet smile.

[21:27] Rena Mayne blinked slowly and looked up. She stared for a moment and then her eyes darted around the room, but there was no one here to verify if the vision was real or in her head. She looked back down at the book, careful not to look AT Vasha. Maybe if she didn't look, she'd just go away. It had worked before. She closed her eyes tight.

[21:29] Aravasha Yiyuan giggles softly and leans a bit forward, her elbow resting on her knee.." why so ..nervous..someone might think you were less than happy to see me ?"

[21:32] Rena Mayne exhaled slowly and a hand reached out as if to brush something off the table. She yelped and yanked it back when it seemed to her it encountered something warm and solid. She slid sideways in the booth, eyes open and staring at Vasha. "You're .... not here." hissed through her teeth. But oh god, what if she was, she wouldn't be the first person to come back from the dead in this town. If she was real, Rena was going to look, well, as psycho as she felt lately.

[21:34] Aravasha Yiyuan leans along the table edge as if posing for an erotic photo.." but of course im here.." she sighs.." i am as real as this table". she runs delicate fingers along it's edge her eyes staring into the woman's opposite her

[21:37] Rena Mayne couldn't have looked more confused if she was faking it. "How?" It was all she could think to ask, at least at first...then, something else struck her. "Why are you -here- though. You hated me." She straightened slightly, trying to at least look a little more normal.

[21:40] Aravasha Yiyuan reaches out a hand and gently caresses Rena's cheek..." ahhh Rena...so sadly misunderstood Rena...i never hated you..well maybe just a little...but it never had to be that way. in your heart you know that"

[21:44] Rena Mayne blinked slowly, too shocked to recoil from the touch. Her eyes closed again and she willed the vision, if it was such, to go away. When they opened though, it was still there. Or...Vasha was. She reached up to push her hair out of her eyes and her hand trembled slightly. She quickly dropped it to the table...."Seems like that's how it was meant to be, from the moment I saw...well. You know."

[21:46] Aravasha Yiyuan rests her chin demurely in her palms as she looks closely at renaa soft smile to her lips.." what do i know..i don't know what i know unless you tell me what i know"

[21:51] Rena Mayne blinked again, this was all too surreal. She'd been seeing things that weren't there, she knew that...and hearing people long gone as well. But this was the first time she'd found herself having a conversation with .... she shook her head and looked down at the book. "You always had pretty strong opinions about me before. Cloning go bad or something...missing a few key memories there?" she risked a look up to see the other woman's reaction.

[21:54] Aravasha Yiyuan continues resting her chin in her hands and doesn't even blink , just that same soft smile.." ohh i know..i just want to hear you say it..say -HIS- name ..you know you want to..you always wanted to..scream it as you felt his rough hands roaming across your bare flesh..as you writhed underneath him..all the while imagining yourself in -MY- place "

[21:56] Rena Mayne sucked in a breath. Well, if she was a clone, she remembered it all... "You always thought that, but I never wanted to take your place...didn't want to take him away. I knew where I fit in. I didn't like it but I knew." Her hand curled into a fist and she looked back down at the ledger.

[22:00] Aravasha Yiyuan chuckles softly and rolls over onto her back , arched suggestively as she rest one leg on an upraised knee.." its you that never understood..i never saw you as a threat..i knew where i fit into His life and was content with it...He had others...so many others...and it was always fine with me "

[22:02] Rena Mayne's eyes narrowed. "Fine with you." she repeated. "Was it? Really?" she was starting to believe Vasha was really there, and not in her head. After all, Rith had come back...why not Vasha. Maybe Damian had planned for her survival. She leaned toward her. "How could you be ok with it? I know you loved him. I mean...I said I was ok with it with Forge too, but I hated them all."

[22:06] Aravasha Yiyuan rolls back over to her side, an arm laying gently along her hip as she looked deeply into Rena's searching eyes..." because i loved him..it made him happy..the chase , the conquest..he needed that to feel ...to feel happy...i never hated any of them..Guin was my only friend..do you think i didn't know what was happening with them...-I- encouraged her to continue the relationship"

[22:09] Rena Mayne nodded slowly. "She told me." she looked up, finally meeting Vasha's eyes. "I couldn't have done that. I didn't want to know about them...and when I did know I made sure they hurt...if Forge had had a ...Guin, well. I'd have killed her." she scooted closer to Vasha. "How could you not hate her?? I hated him for taking her away from me."

[22:15] Aravasha Yiyuan sits up then and leans very close to rena, their noses almost touching, their eyes locked together...." the key is ..acceptance ..to value what -He- is willing to give...to never demand , never cling...to never appear needy....but you , you never could quite achieve that, could you. i remember when you were always just on the fringe ..always just close enough but never too close to be noticed..or thinking you weren't noticed"

[22:19] Rena Mayne didn't pull away as Vasha neared, at least not until the last comment, that made her wince and then rear back. "I was an idiot then, an idiot who didn't know what she was getting into." well, it was partially true, she'd thought she'd known exactly what she was getting into...but she'd stayed on the fringes, not because she didn't want it but because she was afraid. Afraid of all of them, but mostly afraid of that thing inside her that had drawn her to them.

[22:24] Aravasha Yiyuan remains so close.." ohh Rena Rena..when will it end..when will you stop lying to yourself..you -knew- you craved it ,needed it,,begggged for it...we both know it's true"

[22:26] Rena Mayne shook her head, violently. "I never...begged. Never. I ran, he chased." she closed her eyes again, a trembling hand reaching to close the book. "I never asked." whispered....

[22:28] Guinevere Fouroux doesn't just appear in the Peep Show, as her pixels might indicate. Instead she leads Ixion through the streets, to the waterfront. She gives the bar to her right a speculative, thoughtful look as they pass, but moves on and pushes open the door to the Peep. "Knock knock." At a glance, there's no one around, until she spots Rena at one of the booths. "Avon calling." Not noticing anything amiss at first, she tugs Ixion in the rest of the way and lets the door swing shut behind them.

[22:28] Aravasha Yiyuan smiles almost cruelly before laying her cheek gently against Rena's ..." i know ..i know ..and it was the same..every time ...ohh so many times "

[22:33] Rena Mayne reared back, pulling away from Vasha as if she'd been burned. "Never again." she repeated the words she'd said to Marquis. "No more fucking Hounds." A split second after she spoke, Guin's voice registered and she looked her way, then back at Vasha on the table.

Did You know?

Many artists have been inspired by Hieronymus Bosch, including Pieter Bruegel, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, Joan Miró, Maurits Escher and Jan Fabre.

Hieronymus Bosch is one of the world’s most famous artists. His characteristic work full of illusions and hallucinations, bizarre monsters and nightmares, depicts the great themes of his time: temptation, sin and judgement. His work was no less popular after his death and inspired innumerable artists to the present day, making Bosch one of the most important artists of the late Middle Ages.

Jheronimus Bosch – Visions of a Genius will be the highlight of the Bosch Year 2016, a unique event and an unparalleled homage to the most important Medieval artist from the Netherlands.

Visit Jheronimus Bosch – Visions of a Genius and experience the incomparable power of an artist who, five centuries after his death, still inspires: 's-Hertogenbosch's most famous son: Jheronimus Bosch.

's-Hertogenbosch

'

s-Hertogenbosch, literally "The Duke's Forest" in English, and historically in French: Bois-le-Duc) is a city and municipality in the southern Netherlands. It is the capital of the province of North Brabant.

In speech, the Dutch seldom use the formal 's-Hertogenbosch but rather the colloquial Den Bosch. Den Bosch means "The Forest".

History

The city's official name is a contraction of the Dutch des Hertogen bosch—"the Duke's forest". The duke in question was Henry I, Duke of Brabant, whose family had owned a large estate at nearby Orthen for at least four centuries. He founded a new town located on some forested dunes in the middle of a marsh. At age 26, he granted 's-Hertogenbosch city rights and the corresponding trade privileges in 1185. This is, however, the traditional date given by later chroniclers; the first mention in contemporaneous sources is 1196. The original charter has been lost. His reason for founding the city was to protect his own interests against encroachment from Gelre and Holland; from its first days, he conceived of the city as a fortress. It was destroyed in 1203 in a joint expedition of Gelre and Holland, but was soon rebuilt. Some remnants of the original city walls may still be seen. In the late 15th century, a much larger wall was erected to protect the greatly expanded settled area. Artificial waterways were dug to serve as a city moat, through which the rivers Dommel and Aa were diverted.

Until 1520, the city flourished, becoming the second largest population centre in the territory of the present Netherlands, after Utrecht. The birthplace and home of one of the greatest painters of the northern Renaissance, Hieronymus Bosch, the city was also a center of music, and composers, such as Jheronimus Clibano, received their training at its churches. Others held positions there: Matthaeus Pipelare was musical director at the Confraternity of Our Lady; and renowned Habsburg copyist and composer Pierre Alamire did much of his work at 's-Hertogenbosch.

Eighty Years' War

The wars of the Reformation changed the course of the city's history. It became an independent bishopric. During the Eighty Years' War, the city took the side of the Habsburg (Catholic) authorities and thwarted a Calvinist coup. It was besieged several times by Prince Maurice of Orange, stadtholder of most of the Dutch Republic, who wanted to bring 's-Hertogenbosch under the rule of the rebel United Provinces. The city was successfully defended by Claude de Berlaymont, also known as Haultpenne.

...

Louis XIV to Bonaparte

After the Peace of Westphalia, the fortifications were again expanded. In 1672, the Dutch rampjaar, the city held against the army of Louis XIV of France. In 1794, French revolutionary troops under command of Charles Pichegru took the city with hardly a fight: in the Batavian Republic, both Catholics and Brabanders at last gained equal rights.

From 1806, the city became part of the Kingdom of Holland and, from 1810, it was incorporated into the French Empire. It was captured by the Prussians in 1814. The next year, when the United Kingdom of the Netherlands was established, it became the capital of North Brabant. Many newer and more modern fortresses were created in the vicinity of the city. Until 1878 it was forbidden to build outside the ramparts. This led to overcrowding and the highest infant mortality in the kingdom. The very conservative city government prevented industrial investment—they didn't want the number of workers to grow—and the establishment of educational institutions—students were regarded as disorderly. As a result, the relative importance of the city diminished.

...

Museums are the Stedelijk Museum 's-Hertogenbosch, Noordbrabants Museum and the Jheronimus Bosch Art Center. The painter Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450–1516) remains probably the best known citizen of 's-Hertogenbosch.
