De Haar Castle is a castle in the village of Haarzuilens in the Dutch province of Utrecht. De Haar Castle is the largest castle in the Netherlands. We do not know how the castle originated. As a result, we do not know what the first castle looked like. In 1449 the castle came into the possession of the van Zuylen family. Around 1482 the castle was often attacked. At the end of the 19th century, the castle was no more than a ruin.In 1890, Etienne baron van Zuylen van Nyevelt van de Haar inherited the castle. He had the castle restored. The famous architect Pierre Cuypers and his son Joseph Cuypers were commissioned to build the castle.Since 2000 the Kasteel de Haar foundation of the Natuurmonumenten Association has been the owner of the castle.

De Haar Castle (Dutch: Kasteel de Haar) is located near Haarzuilens, in the municipality of Utrecht in the Netherlands. The current buildings, all built upon the original castle, date from 1892 and are the work of Dutch architect P.J.H. Cuypers, in a Neo-Gothic restoration project funded by the Rothschild family.[1

The reconstruction was completed in 1912, according to a new design (Cuypers, architect of CS Amsterdam and Rijksmuseum). So it is not a medieval castle. Certainly wonderful, with a touch of Disney.

A bit of haar was blowing in and a fairly faint low rainbow was formed and blew in with it.

Castle De Haar is one of the most famous and visited castles in all of Holland and was originally founded in the late 1300’s by the Van de Haar family, whose standing in society allowed them the comfort of building a fortified abode.

By 1449, the castle became the property of the Van Zuylen family thru marriage. In 1482, the castle was destroyed due to differences of opinion (quarrels) between the city of Utrecht and its bishop

By the 17th century, the Van Zuylen family line had become extinct and the castle was inherited by the Van Stembors, who originated from the south of Holland - present day Belgium. French soldiers attacked and damaged the castle during the years 1672 and 73.

In 1801, Castle De Haar passed to JJ.van Zuylen van Nijevelt, a distant cousin of the Zuylen family. JJ had inherited a castle that was in a poor state of repair due to 200 years of neglect. Upon his death, these magnificent ruins passed to his son Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt in 1890.

The rebuilding of the castle was started in 1892 under the guidance of one of Holland’s most famous architects Dr PHJ Cuypers. It is his influence on Castle De Haar that we see today. PHJ Cuypers rebuilt the castle as close as possible to the original outlines and were there was not sufficient material to work with he used his own ideas of what a medieval castle should look like. The interior was rebuilt to a luxurious standard with the inclusion of electricity. A new bailey with an entrance gate was built on its original foundations.

Today the castle is surrounded by parkland but this was not always the case. From the medieval period to the end of the 19th century, the village of Haarzuilens had been surrounded the castle. Haarzuilens was completely demolished and relocated some one and a half kilometres away to the west. The village chapel however was saved from this wilful destruction and incorporated into the new park.

Castle De Haar is now a museum and opens to the public except during the month of September when the Van Zuylen van Nijevelt family turn it back into a home for their month long stay.

To visit De Haar Castle, whether to admire its park, its rich history, the exhibitions, gardens, deer or for a wedding, is to be immersed in a different world. Behind every door, every detail, every flower in its colorful gardens is a story. A story about earlier times, different cultures and interesting characters. De Haar is the largest castle in the Netherlands, once the private residence of the Van Zuylen family, whose descendants still stay here yearly. In the last century, the castle also frequently hosted members of the international jet-set with their lavish lifestyle; from Coco Chanel to Roger Moore, they too left their mark on the sumptuous rooms of the most opulent spot in Utrecht.

Few castles in The Netherlands can equal De Haar for its ideal image of a medieval fortress with towers and ramparts, moats, gates and drawbridges. Like a real fairy-tale castle, it rises majestically from parkland with impressive trees, old gardens, and ponds. The castle is situated in the center of The Netherlands, near Utrecht, and is easy to reach by car. There is ample parking space.

Pont de la Tour Eiffel Bridge (1990) in Hull (Gatineau), Quebec, Canada.

As per Wikipedia:

The Tour Eiffel Bridge, also known as the Montcalm Street Bridge is a small but ornate bridge in Gatineau, Quebec. There had long been a bridge across Brewery Creek, but by the 1980s it needed to be replaced. Hull and the National Capital Commission were working to turn the Brewery Creek area into a tourist and cultural district. It was decided to build an ornate structure.

Incorporated in the bridge was an original steel girder from the Eiffel Tower, that had been part of a recently disassembled staircase. The girder was donated to Hull by Paris mayor Jacques Chirac.

Architects Paul Martineau and Eric Haar modeled the bridge on Parisian style. It opened in 1990.

Entrance to Kasteel de Haar. The biggest castle of the country. Originally from the 14th century. At the end of the 19th century it was a ruin owned by baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt. He married Hélène de Rothschild. The rich Rothschild family financed the rebuild which completed in 1912.

At the end of the previous century, the castle was in bad shape again. Due to subsided ground underneath the castle, the maintenance became too expensive. In 2000, the Van Zuylen family handed it over to Foundation De Haar. With the help of lots of sponsors, it was renovated. Today is looks fantastic and is operated by volunteers.

My visit was excellent! I booked a guided tour called: The Secret Rooms. Staff is nice and has great stories about the building. Interiors are very detailed and look great.

fällt mein haar, ergraut mein haupt zum feld,

darüber der letzte

schnitter sichelt.

schlaf umdunkelt mein gebein.

im traum schon starb ich,

gras schoß aus meinem schädel,

aus schwarzer erde war mein kopf.
