The Hvítá river flows southward, and about a kilometre above the falls it turns sharply to the right and flows down into a wide curved three-step "staircase" and then abruptly plunges in two stages (11 metres or 36 feet, and 21 metres or 69 feet) into a crevice 32 metres (105 ft) deep. The crevice, about 20 metres (66 ft) wide and 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) in length, extends perpendicular to the flow of the river. The average amount of water running down the waterfall is 141 cubic metres (5,000 cu ft) per second in the summer and 80 cubic metres (2,800 cu ft) per second in the winter. The highest flood measured was 2,000 cubic metres (71,000 cu ft) per second.
During the first half of the 20th century and some years into the late 20th century, there was much speculation about using Gullfoss to generate electricity. During this period, the waterfall was rented indirectly by its owners, Tómas Tómasson and Halldór Halldórsson, to foreign investors. However, the investors' attempts were unsuccessful, partly due to lack of money. The waterfall was later sold to the state of Iceland, and is now protected.
Sigríður Tómasdóttir, the daughter of Tómas Tómasson, was determined to preserve the waterfall's condition and even threatened to throw herself down. Although it is widely believed, the very popular story that Sigríður saved the waterfall from exploitation is untrue.[citation needed] A stone memorial to Sigriður, located above the falls, depicts her profile.

• The sight of the spectacular Gullfoss with its masses of water tumbling over a steep cliff is breathtaking. The Gullfoss is formed by the glacial river Hvítá. The river owes its name "white river" to the large amount of sand and rubble that it transports in its watercourse.
Not much to say about this one. It's just another powerful winter in Iceland. How not to love this place...
This pano shows the wonderful Gullfoss waterfall at really bad weather conditions. It was raining hard, wind was blowing and it was getting more and more dark. But I was lucky to get a few images from this beautiful and very impressive place at Iceland.
This pano was stitched from 4 single shots.

Possibly the most iconic of Iceland's watefalls, Gullfoss is the main attraction on the Golden Circle that includes Geysir, Faxi, Thingvellir National Park, and numerous other stops and short hikes.
One thing that I loved about Iceland is how close they let you get to nature. The trail takes you right up to the edge and you can feel the power of the falls.
Thanks for the fave's and comments. You can see the rest of the pics of our trip to Iceland clicking here.
Quite a unique waterfall, heavily visited since it's very close to Reykjavik right off the Golden Circle.
Two things that Iceland does not have a shortage of is sheep and waterfalls. Gullfoss is in the southwest part of Iceland and is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Iceland. This pic a shot at sunrise around 3:30am.
Thanks for looking
Vinny :)
Located about 70 miles east of Reykjavík this huge, breathtaking, two-tier waterfall is one of Iceland's most popular attractions. Located on the Hvítá river canyon the falls can pass 140 cubic meters of water every second. The name Gullfoss means "golden falls".
Gullfoss (translated to ‘Golden Falls’) is one of Iceland’s most iconic and beloved waterfalls, found in the Hvítá river canyon in south-west Iceland. The canyon walls on both sides of the waterfall reach heights of up to 70 metres (230 feet), descending into the great Gullfossgjúfur canyon. Geologists believe that this canyon was formed by glacial outbursts at the beginning of the last age.
Well I had mentioned previously that GF 3 would would probably be my last Gullfoss pic, however decided to post another. Right on the edge. Iceland

I wish I could convey how epic of a scene this was in real life... I guess you can look at this picture and imagine if it was 1000% more awesome.
Located along Iceland's "Golden Circle"
The Golden Falls is Iceland's most famous waterfall. The double cascade drops 32 m and on sunny days the mist creates rainbows, as seen here.
