Gullfoss is made up of two waterfalls. The first of them, at the highest part of the falls, has a drop of about 11 meters. After this, the water meets another even larger jump: the second Gullfoss waterfall measures 20 meters, so that the totality of both is 31 meters high.
Gullfoss means “golden waterfall”, according to legend, many years ago a farmer named Gýgur lived in the area, who over the years had accumulated an enormous amount of gold. Gýgur worried about what would happen to his gold when he died. Since he couldn't stand the idea that someone could take it away from him once he was dead, he chose to keep it in a chest and throw it into the depths of the waterfall.
Gullfoss (translated to 'Golden Falls') is one of Iceland's most iconic and beloved waterfalls, found in the Hvítá river canyon in Southwest Iceland.

Gullfoss (Golden Waterfall) is probably the most famous waterfall in Iceland. It is located in the south-west of the country, close to the hot springs and geysers of Haukadalur. On warm summer days, up to 1,200 cubic metres of water thunder down every second.

Hey, how's it going?
Thought I'd share this quick photo I took at Gullfoss in Iceland.
Sonia and I are planning a trip back home to England/Slovakia later this year and hopefully we can squeeze in a quick visit back to Iceland while we're there.
I was so awe-struck the first time and was just enjoying being there so much that I don't feel like I got the most out of it photo-wise.
Next time we will be in full-on shooting mode I think!
Cheers

Gullfoss is a waterfall located in the canyon of the Hvítá river in southwest Iceland ,perhaps one of Iceland's most iconic and beloved waterfalls.Iceland today is 1 of the most visited & most photographed place in the world but I remember my first visit to Iceland 9 years back, the place was quite & calm, roads had few cars all the places had only few people but after going 8 times each year I saw how the place changed.. Roads been broaden up, much bigger parking places & much further from the main destination, traffic jams, costly hotels, food quality going down & most important part I miss the calmness..
This beautiful foss is part of another one of those cleverly designed tourist traps; the golden circle.
It is very much worth while having a look, if you have your own transport.
We went to see it on a tour from Reykjavik, but unfortunately you get to spend very little time there before they move on to next site.
Did manage to get this shot though.
Gullfoss (Golden Waterfall) is an iconic waterfall of Iceland offering a spectacular view of the forces and beauty of untouched nature. Gullfoss is part of the Golden Circle tour, located in South Iceland on the Hvítá (White) river which is fed by Iceland´s second biggest glacier, the Langjökull. The water plummets down 32 meters in two stages into a rugged canyon which walls reach up to 70 meters in height.
Golden waterfall
No es una de las maravillas del mundo pero es impresionante. Se llama tambien Cascada de oro y tiene una caida de 190 metros, el agua se pulveriza hasta formar el arco iris.

I went on a photography tour in southern Iceland in October but before the tour started, my friends and I drove around the Golden Circle for a day. It was very busy as you can see with the stream of people but the autumn colours were stunning.
Gullfoss means Gold waterfalls, due to the wonderful warm water reflexes. During a freezy day the appearence was a bit different by the iconic dream, but definitely fascinating.
Because of the waterfall’s two stages, Gullfoss should actually be thought of as two separate features. The first, shorter cascade is 11 metres (36 feet), whilst the second drop is 21 metres (69 feet). The canyon walls on both sides of the waterfall reach heights of up to 70 metres (230 feet), descending into the great Gullfossgjúfur canyon. Geologists believe that this canyon was formed by glacial outbursts at the beginning of the last age.
In the summer, approximately 140 cubic metres (459 cubic feet) of water surges down the waterfall every second, whilst in winter that number drops to around 109 cubic metres (358 cubic feet). With such energy, visitors should not be surprised to find themselves drenched by the waterfall’s mighty spray.
Gullfoss, Iceland. We got very lucky on our first morning in Iceland with this ripper sunrise. We got here just in time as a couple of minutes later the colour had disappeared.
