This friendly little pooch joined us for about 5 miles of an 8 mile walk round Loch Coulin. Nobody else around, just wanted some company I think. Very sweet.
This is the Aborigine who took me on a guided walk through the Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal community. He's standing in front of a temporary shelter, which the Aborigines often build as needs require due to weather.
Omarunga Camp offers an afternoon guided walk upstream along the Kunene River in search of crocodiles. After too many miles bumping across Namibia’s rough roads, a leisurely walk was just what the doctor ordered!

Our guide was Mohamed Salem Boudija, "Salama". He told us his name was Salem, which means "peace". He was wonderful. He was the Vice President of the Association des Guides de Tourisme d'Agadir et la Sud. He spoke French (the second language of Morocco, along with Arabic), German and English. If anyone is going to Morocco, he is the guide to look for. His email addresses are: Salamaboudija@hotmail.com and boud_bouj@hotmail.com.
The Guided-missile destroyer USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) hosted the family of the ship’s namesake, May 2.
Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt’s grandson, H. Delano Roosevelt, took a tour of Roosevelt with family and friends during a scheduled port visit in Manama, Bahrain.
The tour was led by Cmdr. Jay Clark, Roosevelt’s commanding officer. Sailors from the crew gave presentations about the various departments and capabilities of the ship including bridge fundamentals, navigation, engineering, damage control, aviation, search and rescue, and visit, board, search and seizure operations.
“It was an honor and a privilege to introduce USS Roosevelt to Mr. Roosevelt,” said Cmdr. Jay Clark. “The crew, as well as myself, take immense pride in being Roosevelt Sailors. I am sure that the grandson of our namesake saw that pride and knew we were honoring the legacy Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt left behind.”
After the tour, Clark led the group into the wardroom, where officers were assembled to attend the Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) designation pinning of Chief Warrant Officer James Smith. As a surprise, Smith bestowed the honor of pinning the SWO device to Mr. Roosevelt.
“It was dynamic,” said Smith. “To have the grandson of such a great man and woman, the namesakes of our ship, perform the pinning is a once in a lifetime occurrence I will never forget.”
Following the pinning Cmdr. Clark presented Mr. Roosevelt with Roosevelt memorabilia including a signed picture of the ship. In return, Mr. Roosevelt presented Cmdr. Clark with a coin from the battleship USS Iowa, which his family has been influential in helping to restore as a historical monument in Long Beach, Calif., where H. Delano Roosevelt and his family call home.

While traversing between Nagoya and Kyoto, Japan, I came across a small
town with more than a few little walking wooden men. In Japan schools are
expected to aid in making sure their students are safe, even on the way to
school. In this little village, the local school set up a bunch of these
markers so that elementary school students always have a friendly little
guide to direct them in the right direction. These can often be found along
the walking routes to the elementary schools, as unlike here in The States,
almost all students, from the time they become students at a young age,
walk to school alone, even taking buses and trains. This little wooden
guide is a sort of extension of the schools authority over the lives and
passage of their students. Schools go very far out of their way to "look
after" their students. At a young age, this is definitely a good thing,
however once these students reach high school it is very much perceived as
oppressive and strict. In this regard the authority of the school to
dictate what route students will take from their home to the school is
acceptable as they are young and could use the protection. When you are a
senior in high school, however, this is not so easily swallowed. Such
outreach by a high school here in the United States would never be viewed
as acceptable by either the students or the parents.
