Graffiti Fantasy Tour 2012...with a little help from some friends

Excerpt from www.discoverhongkong.com/ca/explore/discover-sha-tau-kok....:

Located in Hong Kong’s North District and right next to Shenzhen’s Yantian District, Sha Tau Kok was designated as part of the Frontier Closed Area in 1951. Since then, Sha Tau Kok has been accessible only to individuals with a closed area permit. Back in the days when Sha Tau Kok was closed to non-residents, visiting the border town also required a guarantee from a local resident. As it begins to open gradually, Sha Tau Kok has become a great choice for weekend getaways.

The first phase of the opening of Sha Tau Kok began in June 2022, followed by the second phase starting January 2024. Visitors can board a kaito ferry to explore Sha Tau Kok and enjoy the area’s beautiful scenery, unique attractions and local delicacies, either independently or through local tours. You can also take a ferry to nearby islands and areas, such as Lai Chi Wo, Kat O, Ap Chau and Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark.

The opening of Sha Tau Kok

•The daily quota of visitors with the Tourism Closed Area Permit is set at 2,300 individuals, and 700 group visitors on weekends and public holidays. There is no quota limit for groups on weekdays.

•Individual travellers must enter Sha Tau Kok by public transport, with the addition of ferry services to Sha Tau Kok from Lai Chi Wo/Ap Chau/Kat O. Private cars are NOT allowed.

•Area: Sha Tau Kok (excluding Chung Ying Street).

•Opening hours: Every day from 7am to 9pm.

Rogers pass is one of the most fantastic passes I have seen in my life. It is inside Glacier National Park, which is according to the books a less well known park. I made a few nice hikes here (more pics later), and my campsite was just a few km's before the actual highest point of the pass. I tried to conceal the road in this pic, i almost managed to do it, except for a very small stretch of the road, and the sign towards the visitor center.

From 11 june till the 25th of July, I traveled in Canada. Starting in Brighton Ontario, where my sister lives at the border of an amazing part of lake Ontario, I flew to Vancouver, and Vancouver island where I took the boat at Port Hardy to take part 1 of the Inside passage, to Prince Rupert in BC. Two days later I took part 2 to Skagway in Alaska. When coming from Skagway Alaska, you can take the train to Carcross. it is a very scenic train ride that halts at Bennet lake.

And then to Whitehorse and further on by car to Kluane National park in the Yukon district. Whitehorse is situated at the border of the Yukon. Frow there I flew back to Vancouver, rented a car, and traveled three weeks in the BC- and Alberta Rockies, visiting the famous, and less famous Nature parks like Banff and Jasper. Last few days back to Brighton Ontario to enjoy lake Ontario once more, before going home. A picture of my itinerary can be found on Facebook (www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152940536581759&set...).

4000 pictures later, it is quite a task to show the right stuff, although the stunning scenery guarantees at least a few great shots to share. Objective will be to make a book (for myself mainly), and that might take a while.

I hope you will enjoy the impression of my travel, one that equals earlier journeys to Alaska and south America, this journey was the first in the digital era, and equally intensive because of all the hiking activities every day on and on. I loved every minute of it.

This is the photo that started the conversation with questions that perhaps can't be answered. I've always liked and hated this shot. The larger Blue-eyed Darners are known to perch in a vertical position and, in 11 years, I've managed to capture just one of these three-inch beauties. It's funny that I was able to catch five of these in flight with an SX10 in 2010, but never just resting.

But the question came up, should I Photoshop all the grass out or would that be cheating? Opinions varied and still do. My problem was that I've never learned Photoshop, and although I think it's fantastic what can be done with the software, I also think there's a limit as to what changes can be made.

Besides, I have a mid-level software program which I use for some edition. Certainly cropping. Maybe a little contrast, but I rarely touch the color. Guaranteed that my Cardinal Meadowhawk is the brightest red you've ever or I've ever seen.

Over the years, I diddled with this shot. The only thing I could do is put a vignette around it, but that still left most of its habitat. I actually started the summer of 2019 trying to find another perched as this, but no luck. So, like it or not, here's my one and only Blue-eyed Darner Mosaic (aka, Mosaic Darner) in all its grassy splendor.

Humber Bay Marina in Lake Ontario with all the sailboats is a lovely viewpoint.

Thank you for visiting, enjoy each day, we are not guaranteed another.

I used a slow shutter speed to get a full 'prop circle' from the four-bladed propeller.

Billed as 'An economical 3 seat touring aeroplane', presumably for the extremely wealthy, it was not wildly successful as only 3 were built. This one survives, though.

Aircraft Transport and Travel Ltd., whose name is on the side of the plane, was the first airline to offer a regular daily international flight. It was between London and Paris, starting in 1919. The cost was £21 - equivalent to £750 today. Flight time was 2.5 hours, double today's flight time, but you didn't need to be at the airport 2 hours before departure. There was no in-flight entertainment, but you did get a hot water bottle for warmth, and you were guaranteed a window seat.

Back in the day I would have given a kidney to own one, years later I was ‘fortunate’ to borrow one for a few days...never has a dream been so comprehensively shattered.

It was slow, handled badly and frankly, I wouldn’t have given a fingernail clipping to own one never mind a kidney.

Now a Triumph Stag on the other hand...

This picture is in the same spot as www.flickr.com/photos/115540984@N02/25165999811. No helicopters but a train, and a long one too! In fact trains are a common sight (and sounds as well) in these areas, and from time to time it is hard to imagine you have these in Nature Parks. specially during the night, It can be tiresome to hear them signalling over and over. It is probably the only negative experience I had in Canada. It is just too much!

Main reason for showing this pano is the great light (again) and the wonderful valley on the right that can't be seen in the previous picture), and which was wonderful to watch while being there. Enjoy!

Guaranteed to go when pushed

This sunset to the side of my house, silhouetting my neighbor's home and the mast of my sailboat next to others others, was an interesting contrast of solid colors.

It seemed as if the masts' as black rods were levitating a white hot solar mass floating above them, in a red hot sky on a cool November evening.

As I reflect at Dawn on this bright image of dark silhouettes of Sunset one year ago, I am reminded of the power of miracles. Surreal events in our life that can make the impossible become possible. Guaranteed things that we take for granted that do not transpire. Such is the magic of life. Such is the drama of living.

All we can do is live every day, knowing, believing, that nothing is impossible. And, Impossible is Nothing.

Trees on a rocky peninsula catch the first morning sun at a Yosemite National Park backcountry lake.

There’s nothing like have the time for a slow morning wandering the perimeter of a forest-lined Yosemite backcountry lake. We camped at this one for something like four nights back in 2014, when a group of us spent a week in the high country making photographs. Each morning, well before sunrise, it was down to the shoreline wander and photograph.

I love photographs of trees in back-light, but there are some challenges. The obvious one, of course, is that you are pretty much guaranteed to be shooting almost directly into the sun. But second challenge is that the scene between camera position and subject is often in the bright sunlight, even if the background is pleasantly shaded. Photographing on a lake can help with this issue since the water helpfully reflects that shaded background and is hardly affected at all by the direct light, aside from a bit of extra illumination of anything that happens to be floating on the water.

on February 7, 2021, blizzard Darcy rages across Western Europe, a strong wind accompanied by drifting snow. The last heavy snowstorm in Amsterdam dates from 1985. In the evening the storm had died down. Wind, cold, dark? It's minus eight degrees celcius. All reasons to go outside. Scarf on, walking shoes on and into the city centre. Do you see those lights, do you see the smoke coming out of the chimney and do you hear the fire crackling? The snow reflects the light in the evening, giving you a beautiful view. I enjoy the sound of crunching snow under my shoes and the beautiful view of the Amsterdam canal houses. Walking in winter is not only a guarantee for red cheeks and a breath of fresh air, but is also good for body and soul. There is something very beautiful about Amsterdam in winter. The Jordaan is covered with thick snow as above on the Keizersgracht. There is a tranquil beauty of snow and cold. A white blanket does indeed make Amsterdam slightly different from those other 360 days of the year: different views, different sounds, different light. A winter party sprinkled with white confetti. And it is quite simply a welcome break in the covid-19 lockdown. A period when the days start to look more and more alike and string together in a uniform slurry, with only the longing for the future as a ray of light in the darkness of the curfew. The snow remains at this temperature. More than 10 centimeters of snow has fallen. This is a welcome change. The snow also provides a lot of fun for children here in the Amsterdam Jordaan . Snowball fight, making snowmen or sledding. All fun activities that children do in this beautiful snowy world. Anyone who thinks away for a moment will imagine themselves in the world of Hendrick Avercamp today. It will continue to snow for the next few days. Expect more than 17 cm of snow in Amsterdam.

When an Amsterdammer sees the Westertoren, he or she thinks of Theo Thijssen. He felt an intense bond with the capital, where he was born and died. He grew up in the Jordaan, in the shadow of the Westertoren. Theo Thijssen was also a trade unionist and social democratic politician. The book 'Kees de Jongen' is about a boy growing up in Amsterdam at the end of the 19th century. It takes place in the Jordaan. Main character Kees Bakels lives near the Westertoren. His father owns a shoe shop and workshop. Kees lives in his fantasies. Kees' musings are still recognizable to many today. Thijssen also talked about the flu epidemic in the winter of 1889-1890 and now 131 years later we talk about our covid-19 epidemic. Little has changed in that regard. Photo taken in the evening at the Keizersgracht and Leliegracht intersection in the Amsterdam-Jordaan with the Westertoren in the background.

op 7 februari 2021 raast sneeuwstorm Darcy over West- Europa deze hard wind ging gepaard met stuifsneeuw. De laatste zware sneeuwstorm in Amsterdam dateert van 1985. In de avond was de storm gaan liggen. Wind, kou, donker?

Sunday's version of 446 has a good roll on approaching Arthur road. The days are getting shorter, and the nights colder. With any luck, a snow storm isn't far on the horizon.

Those who think away for a while can imagine themselves in Hendrick Avercamp's world today. As one of the first landscape painters of the 17th-century Dutch school, he specialized in painting the Netherlands in winter, The snow is during the lock-down days an uninhibited winter fun in the streets of Amsterdam. Since the first snow had stuck to the ground, the neighborhood has turned out for a carefree winter entertainment. The next days it will keep on snowing. Expected more than 17 cm snow in Amsterdam. Photo of the snow-covered Bridge 19 in the Herengracht over the Blauwburgwal. In total, these are at least 6,394 bridges, making Amsterdam by far the city with the most bridges in the world.

This was one of those nightmarish days you only dream about.

It began at 7:30 with that crazy park lady. I walk far away from her now. I park in a different place and walk a quarter-mile from her. But when she sees me, she walks directly at me, no matter where I am and who I'm with. Today, I was picking raspberries. I stopped when she walked toward me. I walked in the woods. I think she followed me, but I went fast, came out on the other side, and walked in the road. She is really ruining my days when I see her, which, fortunately, is once a week.

I came home and worked on cutting glass for awhile, and then I went skating. I also dropped some things off at the post office and attempted to buy stamps, but my card wouldn't scan, and the post office REFUSED to enter the number manually. They said it was against store policy. I asked for the manager. He wouldn't come out. I banged on his door. He wouldn't come out. A supervisor came to talk to me. She couldn't answer any of my questions. All she knew was, "They wouldn't take mines, either."

I went home angry and found a message from my mother that the travel agent wants to make sure my daughter has a passport confirmation. Except that I have tried that every day, and it hasn't worked. It still didn't. I called the passport office once again (I called last week, and a woman said she'd e-mail DC to put a rush on it), and I was told to press one and three and zero, and then the machine told me there were too many callers waiting, and it hung up. Seventeen times. And then when I finally got through, I was on the phone for 59 minutes.

The woman at the passport office told me there's no record of my daughter's application, that I can try to make an appointment for one of the three days this week that it's open before the trip, but she won't guarantee that I get an appointment, and no one's reimbursing us the thousands of dollars for the tickets.

Then I called the post office, and I was told, "This is what I can do for you, ma'am. I will call myself." I asked about the canceled money order, and the woman said, "I just told you what I could do for you. Don't try to tell me what I can do for you. I am doing what I told you I would do, now let me do that without telling me...."

She said she'd call in the morning. Meanwhile, I can pay $5 to put a trace on the money order.

I wrote to my congressman. I sent a third e-mail to the passport office, and it was actually answered today. There's no record of my daughter's passport. The person who wrote told me to call the passport office again.

I went to a self-defense class tonight. I punched the bag very, very hard. It was a very, very bad bag.

(But the instructor's son, holding the bag, was truly a hottie.)

(For 365 Days. This is Day 262. )

I skated for one hour today. It was my only pleasure. I didn't even enjoy the beers.

I can still laugh, as long as there's Engrish.

Hi Folks!

NO NEED TO COMMENT ... I will not be coming around as I am leaving again tomorrow for 10 days. Just wanted to share.

I took a very quick trip to RMNP. We left Grand Junction on Monday at about noon and got back home Tuesday about noon! I had to get to RMNP during rut and color to shoot elk. Got SO MANY wonderful elk shots but right now I just want to give a color report to all those who have written me asking as they are coming to Colorado to visit.

I traveled I 70 from Grand Junction to the Winterpark exit which we take to RMNP. So I got a good look at the full spectrum.

In a normal year the color starts on the Eastern slope and slowly moves over the rockies and down into the San Juans. I didn't find it to much ahead of that this year. Maybe just a bit ahead of schedule but not much.

RMNP color is peak right now ... up to Vail from the Western slope I would say is near or at peak ... from Vail on down on the western slope it has some color down to almost none as you near GJ.

In our 24 hours we got in rain, snow, sleet and blue sky! I love Colorado! You can see there was a light dusting of snow.

NOW FOLKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS... everyone of these shots was taken out my car window and not one of them has been cleaned up so I know there are raindrops, blurs, and all the stuff that goes with car shooting! I only took them to give those who want to know a bit of a color report.

THANKS! Can't wait to share the elk sightings as they were great. This time of the year you are pretty much guaranteed elk sightings in RMNP which is why I made the trip.

A steady supply of breaking waves in February ensures Betsie's concrete apron remains a slippery slope till spring and beyond

Never have I fallen so many times in such a short span of time. Even with crampons, steady footing was no guarantee. Everything here on this morning was breaking, or trying to break. The sun broke once, breaking waves were many and the light herself seemed to want to break something of me. Had there been someone to witness the folly I am sure they would have thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Got roughed up a bit but still had a ball.

The London Guarantee Building, formerly known as the Stone Container Building,[1] is a historic building located in the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois. It is known as one of the four 1920s flanks of the Michigan Avenue Bridge (along with the Wrigley Building, Tribune Tower and 333 North Michigan Avenue). It stands on part of the former site of Fort Dearborn. It was designated a Chicago Landmark on April 16, 1996.[2]

In 2001, the building was acquired by Crain Communications Inc. and is now referred to as the Crain Communications Building.

The top of the building resembles the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens, but it is supposedly modelled after the Stockholm Stadshus. It is located in the Michigan–Wacker Historic District. The building stands on the property formerly occupied by the Hoyt Building from 1872 until 1921

The Pinacates Biosphere Reserve is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 9 crewmember on the International Space Station (ISS). The Pinacates—a moon-like volcanic landscape that lies in the Sonoran Desert in Mexico just a few miles from the border with Arizona—is one of the most unique and striking landscapes in North America. The volcanic range is surrounded by one of North America’s largest dune fields, Gran Desierto. The natural history of the region includes thousands of years of human occupation; it is the aboriginal homeland of the O’Odham tribe, also known as the Papago. The region also served as an early training site for Apollo astronauts in the mid-late 1960s. The name Pinacate is derived from “pinacatl,” the Aztec name for the desert stink beetle which is common in the region. The natural and cultural resource management of the region, including the archeological sites and the high biodiversity, is now guaranteed: the site was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993. The high-resolution image provides a view of a large volcanic crater called Crater Elegante, which is one of the most prominent and interesting features of the Pinacates.

After missing the first two days of Texans training camp before agreeing to a five-year, $14 million contract Saturday, outside linebacker Brian Cushing is eager to get on the practice field today with his new teammates.

Cushing, the first-round draft choice from Southern California, is getting $10.435 million in guaranteed money to become the starter on the strong side and help improve a defense that ranked 22nd last season, including 23rd against the run.

“I’m just relieved and excited to have this done,” Cushing said. “I’m ready to play football and help the team win.”

Cushing (6-3, 262) was in Los Angeles when agent Tom Condon reached the agreement with general manager Rick Smith and director of football administration Chris Olsen.

Cushing’s contract could be worth a maximum of $18 million over five years.

In the fifth year of his deal, there’s a clause that could earn him an additional $4 million in an escalator bonus.

Odds are that Cushing’s contract will be extended before he enters the fifth season in 2013.

Smith and Olsen will have all eight of their draft choices under contract when the Texans take the field for the third day of two-a-day drills at their Methodist Training Center.

“It’s very important to have him signed,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “Rick and Chris were up at 3 in the morning trying to get it done. They’ve done a good job.

“Brian’s two days behind now, but he didn’t miss anything we did in the offseason program, so that’s a good thing. He wanted to be here while we were working on the contract, but he couldn’t.”

Rookies who have signed with the Texans report a week early for conditioning and meetings before practicing for the first time with the veterans. Cushing wanted to report with the rookies.

He was working out at Reliant Stadium last week when the Texans had to explain league rules that forced him to leave.

Cushing took what turned out to be a quick trip back to Los Angeles. He returned to Houston on Saturday afternoon.

Texans coaches are excited to get him on the practice field.

“We’re going to put the pads on (Sunday morning), and I know he’s chomping at the bit to get out there,” Kubiak said.

After the Texans used the 15th pick in the first round on Cushing, they inserted him into the starting lineup. He impressed his coaches in the organized team activities and minicamp.

“We like his presence on the ball,” Kubiak said, meaning Cushing has a knack for finding the ball and making plays. “He’s playing over the tight end, and we’re going to ask him to do a great deal. We think he can handle it.

“Brian’s very athletic. He’s physical against the run. He can rush the passer. He can drop into coverage. We brought him here for a reason, and we’re going to put him to work real fast.”

Frank Bush, who is in his first season as defensive coordinator, has to make calls that maximize Cushing’s strengths. The faster Cushing learns, the quicker Bush plans to utilize all his talent.

“We’re going to try to take advantage of all his talent,” Bush said. “Because he’s such a talented kid, there are a lot of things we can do with him.”

The coaches say they think Cushing has everything it takes to become a star at his position.

“Brian can turn and run with the tight end,” Bush said. “He’s big and strong enough to strike them at the line of scrimmage and nullify some of their speed down the field, so we’re comfortable with him in coverage.

“His ability also gives us a chance to be aggressive toward the quarterback. He’s a big guy who’s shown he can get there.”

The goat or domestic goat (Capra hircus) is a domesticated species of goat-antelope typically kept as livestock. It was domesticated from the wild goat (C. aegagrus) of Southwest Asia and Eastern Europe. The goat is a member of the animal family Bovidae and the tribe Caprini, meaning it is closely related to the sheep. There are over 300 distinct breeds of goat. It is one of the oldest domesticated species of animal, according to archaeological evidence that its earliest domestication occurred in Iran at 10,000 calibrated calendar years ago.

Goat-herding is an ancient tradition that is still important in places such as Egypt. Goats have been used for milk, meat, fur, and skins across much of the world. Milk from goats is often turned into goat cheese.

Female goats are referred to as does or nannies, intact males are called bucks or billies, and juvenile goats of both sexes are called kids. Castrated males are called wethers. While the words hircine and caprine both refer to anything having a goat-like quality, hircine is used most often to emphasize the distinct smell of domestic goats.

In 2011, there were more than 924 million goats living in the world, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

France, Paris, Brasserie “L’Européen”, located for over a century across from the Lyon railway station in Paris.

Brasseries became culinary “institutions”; the type of French restaurant with a comfortable, upscale setting, which serves single dishes & other meals, predominantly up-dated classical French cuisine. The word brasserie is also French for "brewery". A brasserie can be expected to have professional service, printed menus & traditionally, white linen, unlike a bistro which may have none of these & often only a blackboard with the dishes they propose. Typically, a brasserie is open every day of the week & serves the same menu all day.

Besides the traditional French dishes, the menu offers a choice of scrumptious seafood platters, a supreme fresh experience with the most delicious varieties of oysters & the full flavours of other shellfish & crustaceans, served from a stand in front of the brasserie.

L’Européen earned its reputation as a magnificent brasserie, specialized in true Parisian style seafood served in dining rooms on several floors, guaranteeing a more private meal.

The place with wooden swirls, mirrors, glass chandeliers, brass, benches, classic English Chesterfield style armchairs, & however, for me the comfortable, office type modern chairs on casters look somehow misplaced in this unique, old-style décor with classic Tiffany & Art Nouveau Lamps.

🙏...Danke, Xièxie 谢谢, Thanks, Gracias, Merci, Grazie, Obrigado, Arigatô, Dhanyavad, Chokrane to you & over

SoCal is a hotbed of youth sports talent, thus giving me the opportunity of shooting many high school athletes before they embark on their professional careers.

This gallery showcases these professional athletes, before they made it to the “bigs” – their high school/college/amateur/youth days – simpler and more innocent times.

The shingle demonstrates the "Chroma-Shake" variety of permanized siding, made by National Gypsum Company. Together, they indeed, make a nice omelet.

...however they also end it up being the toughest eggs to crack in the history of carton platoons!

Because you see... what for us might just be a silly egg paper carton for them is actually a war trench… and I can guarantee you they don’t plan on leaving it without a good fight.

(well… Ziggy actually might….)

Grandview Trail, Grand Canyon, Arizona

A section of the Grandview Trail, an old mining trail down into the Grand Canyon that is now maintained, more or less, by the Park Service.

Later at the Visitor's Center, I read through the outdoor display describing the various trails into the canyon and their conditions. There were many warnings about heat, dehydration, fatigue, and other hazards of the canyon environment. Finally, in large red letters, was the warning "Rescue is Not Guaranteed".
