Unfortunately, it is currently having starting issues.

me and the 86 gs550es after i finally got the thing running i bought the bike as a rolling chassis with everything i need in 6 differant box's it sat that way for seven years in a garage thats what the guy told me when i picked it up

Yes, the shifter shaft is bent, and will need replacing. This one is my mistake. Removed a cover to get a better grip on the engine. We set it down wrong (on this shaft) and bent it.

If they bought one out now - I'd buy one again. No gimmicks, just a very nice machine to ride. Held the road extremely well in the bends. Rear shocks were an experiment (freebies) but didn't last long on it. No improvement over standard shocks. Added extras apart from the top box, Fiamm air horns - vast improvement over the tin that buzzed, and Cibie drive and fog lamps. Not that the exsting headlamp was bad...just needed that extra lighting at high speed. Did about 16000 miles a year on it. Enough said!

1978 GS550 Cafe Racer Project

Steady pacing wins the edurance race at the 2006 VRRA Quinte TT. Despite a weight and HP disadvantage(and a dead battery partway through the race), Larry Tate and Ian McQueen pulled off a win on this vintage GS550.
