Today is the day! We celebrated yesterday because she was excited for school today and celebrating there with her class. Can’t believe she’s 6 now. Told the kids we will be doing birthday Polaroid portraits from now on. Jake is up next in April and he enters double digits. Strange sometimes to think that I’ve got two kids and that they’re no longer babies or toddlers… but here’s to more birthdays!
(and it wasn’t without a little bit of sadness and remembrance for Dustin who has been there for everyone one of her birthdays from 2-5. She mentioned again, how she missed him and loved him.)
It's funny. The chubby cheeks and innocence are gone. The laughter isn't quite as easy to come by, but it's there. The conversation topics are braver. Our hearts are heavier. And there's something different about our eyes.
Perhaps we've seen too much.
Is this growing up?
Today, I got a 50mm, f/1.8 lens.
I think it must be love.

She loves Stitch right now and has two of these stuffed Stitch’s. One is with us and the other is at Papa’s house up north in Michigan. I don’t know why, but in that evening light, she looked so forlorn and all I kept thinking is nobody gets left behind.
The baby Flamingo, born in the summer.
Second group of shots taken with new lens. Canon 100-400mm. A bit of a challenge, Need a lot more practice

I was always fascinated with radio, especially the long-distance AM Top-40 powerhouses I could pick up and record at night. (CKLW in Windsor, Ontario, WCFL in Chicago, WOWO in Fort Wayne Indiana, WFBR in Baltimore... and of course, our local hot Top-40 in New Haven, WAVZ. Later, while in college majoring in computer science, I also honed my skills at the school's radio station.
Over the years I did a number of weekend radio gigs at local stations on and off. In 1990, I was lucky enough to pick up a Saturday evening oldies airshift on a 10,000 watt Connecticut FM that ended up lasting almost 19 years! (and what a lot of FUN that was! Too many stories to tell here...)
We rarely subject him to dressing up. Like any boy his age, his job is to resist and complain.
He's also definitely not a serious guy but the 'tude he sports is all about giving me flack about taking his photo.
I love how grown up he looks, yet it sends a twinge of sadness about just how short childhood is. Sigh. I'm just thankful he's young for his age so there's plenty of time...
It's not every day that a 14 year old kid gets to see something this cool! Out came the Kodak Pocket Instamatic 40 and captured this particular moment in time. There are several more photos of this and other demolitions sprinkled throughout my "Vintage Milford and Woodmont" album.

Hard to believe He is the same Cat as that skinny guy who joined us last September. Maybe it's tied in with his hogging food and water here.
I was eating some Raspberries today on my break at work and realized they had the taste of wild Raspberries.
I was immediately transported back to my Royal Oak youth… The street I lived on dead ended at a woods that my friends and I, really, all the kids of the neighborhood used to go and play “army” capture the flag, hide and seek, find frogs, tadpoles and polliwogs, build forts and tree-houses, hang out, shoot at squirrels with our BB-guns (I don’t remember anyone ever hitting one, but we sure scared the daylights out of a few of them, lol) Racing our bikes through the trails. And just enjoy our summers without the watchful eye of our parents… And in those woods, generally along the outer boarders were the deep backyards of the residents of the neighboring streets lived met the woods, there were great patches of wild concord grapes, Boysenberry, apple and pear trees, and a huge amount of Raspberry bushes…
As I sat there enjoying my store bought fruit, I remembered the many times, after a long afternoon of perusing our boyhood fun, we would stop and gorge ourselves silly on these amazing Raspberries and other fruits… Of course, we would have a million scratches on our legs and arms from the thorns as we waded into the bramble. But it was so worth it.
Funny how just a taste can take you back to a pleasant memory…
I guess many things can: tastes, smells, and sounds (there are many songs or lyrics that will transport me) a picture, or to drive by an old haunt, or even just that random word or thought out of nowhere…
Thankfully, it happens quite often for me. And on that happy note, I will say, I am thankful for the memories :)
