On-Ramp
Oil on canvas, found suitcase, collected nests
2009
Often the object of the subjects' attention is extracted or made invisible to the viewer. The final destination of an airplane or a gaze is not revealed. Russell is interested in the space between the viewer and the viewed; it is in that space that a material object becomes a set of unique ideas in the mind of each viewer. This space itself becomes material as highways and train tracks- themselves creating huge swaths of land that exist as a middle space, a "delocation," rather than a destination. It is only when we consider how we relate to things outside of ourselves, or how we move from one "location" to another, that we become aware of how we form and interpret this space- or how it is formed for us, readymade. The limits of subjectivity, the debate of dualism vs. materialism, and swarm theory also inform this work.
