Inferno
Watercolor & ink on constructed wood
2009
Confession: I never read Dante's Inferno (or the Divine Comedy) before starting this painting, and I never got around to it while working on the painting either. The original concept involved kinetic sculpture intertwined with watercolor painting (I was assured by an engineer friend that my plans would not work).
I thought of the story as a sort of fabricated travel journalism. As someone who rarely travels far, I thought it fitting to choose a story of travel that never happened.
This man had yet to see his final evening
but, through his folly, little time was left
before he did he was so close to it.
