Happily Never After
What makes a ‘Fairy Tale’? We all know one when we see it. They are stories, usually brought to us in the form of an illustrated book or lavishly animated film, that we may remember as our first true moment of escapism; the first moment a childish dream was given form. And yet, fantasy never felt so familiar, did it? Whether as moral indoctrination, or simply as a means to entertain, the Fairy Tale is something both shared by and bestowed upon us by a previous generation, at the core of which lies an inherited system of symbols, meanings, and values.
Some might even say that Fairy Tales are most people’s first experience of modern mythology. Morality could never be more clear, evil so hideously obvious or goodness so modestly endearing. Sympathies lie with downtrodden heirs and valiant heroes, the distressed damsel, a charming prince … and so on.
In a world where the validity of convention and tradition remain dubious at best, we turn to different kinds of stories, those of forgotten eras, cultures, and in so doing we uncover ‘tales’ that the principle distributors of social convention finds too obscure, too strange, or too morally ambivalent, to popularize in films and on the sides of lunchboxes.
In Happily Never After, these ‘forgotten fairy tales’ are explored by works from an eclectic group of illustrators. Employing a diversity of media, styles, and approaches, ranging from commercial sensibilities to retro forms both novel and haunting, the exhibit offers pieces that explore not only the gamut of forgotten myths and stories, but of styles and mediums. Whimsical photographed sculptures tell their tale beside the moody, antiquated textures that tell another. Through each individual exploration, these tales of morality and amusement, mythologies telling an era’s fears as well as their hopes, find rejuvenated voice in Happily Never After.

The Great Longing – The Act of Painting
Our summer exhibition – The Great Longing -– features some twenty contemporary artists, principally from the Netherlands and Sweden, working in the field of abstract art and exploring their varied forms of expression in the widest sense. The exhibition includes everything from powerfully expressive abstract paintings to more subdued, analytical forms of expression. The participating artists make use of numerous different methods including alchemical processes, linguistic experiments, or more intuitive and experimental approaches.
The participating artists are: Katarina Andersson, Raymond Cuijpers, Julius Göthlin, Lukas Göthman, Wieteke Heldens, Jeroen Hofhuizen, Yukako Isobe, Rudy Klomp, André Kruysen, Ray Moon, Mayako Nakamura, Jacco Olivier, Bella Rune, Astrid Sylwan, Jim Thorell, Cole Verhoeven, Charlotte Warsen and Johan Zetterquist.
The artists mainly based in the Netherlands have previously worked together under the name TAOP – The Act of Painting. They function as an artists’ collective in which Raymond Cuijpers and Jeroen Hofhuizen are the main driving force and curate and organize exhibitions in various parts of the world. At each exhibition they seek to achieve a site-specific character by inviting participation from artists in the country in which they are exhibiting.
Even though the membership of TAOPs is constantly changing, the intuitive process remains particularly important and in focus. The creative act – the actual business of painting, of linking together the inner and outer worlds. In the actual, creative moment there is often an intense sense of presence, and so creativity itself forms a longing for this.
Among the Swedish participants there are established artists like Katarina Andersson, Astrid Sylwan, Lukas Göthman and Bella Rune, Johan Zetterquist, as well as a somewhat younger generation of painters like Julius Göthlin and Jim Thorell. The Swedish artists lack the common starting point of their Dutch colleagues, but base their work on rather more varied experiences and cross-border themes.
Normally, abstract or non-figurative art is not concerned with imitating or depicting an outer reality but lets such formal aspects as relationships of colour and form speak their own language or poetry. It is now more than a hundred years since the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky created the first abstract work in 1911, though here in Sweden Hilma af Klint was creating abstract paintings at about the same time, even though these were not exhibited. Both painters are concerned with a spiritual dimension in art.
After the end of World War II abstract art enjoyed a major breakthrough, becoming synonymous with modernity. During the 1950s and 1960s, minimalism and abstract expressionism also became popular. The Great Longing provides us with an insight into what abstract art can look like today.
Curators of the exhibition are Raymond Cuijpers, Lukas Göthman och Agneta von Zeipel, the last two being responsible for the Swedish participants.

The exhibition Textile Languages brings the rich visual vocabulary of textile textures and the poetic of material into a private space. Brought together in a modernist architectural setting, the artworks seem to embody the thoughts of Bauhaus teacher and textile art pioneer, Anni Albers "If the nature of architecture is the grounded, the fixed, the permanent, then textiles are its very antithesis’".
The exhibition showcases a selection of videos, photographs, installations and textiles works from around eighteen artists. With a special emphasis on the Indian art scene, the exhibition brings together practitioners from different cultural contexts and generations. It investigates the interwoven personal, historic and collective experiences that inform the works as well as repetitious processes and political concerns. Moving away from material fetichisation, the show highlights the inherent potential of textiles as a material language that goes beyond the purely aesthetic.
The exhibition also hints at the current trends in ‘neo-craft’, that challenge the traditionally marginalised role of the craft realm and instead place contemporary craft firmly at the center of contemporary creativity. The textile and garment works exhibited throughout the house unveil the extraordinary variety of modes of production as well as their rich historical legacies.
On occasion, the exhibition refers to works and methodologies of such eminent artists as Anni Albers, William Morris, Alighiero Boetti and Sheila Hicks to shine a light on their enduring influence. That diversity of approach and intention is illustrated by the enthusiasm of Sheila Hicks for Pre-Colombian textiles and the influence of her teacher Josef Albers. Her textile work Pinto (2004) is showcased in the exhibition. In the entrance, The World in Workwear (2011) of Jonathan Monk confronts the visitors with a work that takes its direct inspiration from the Mappa by the Italian artist Alighiero Boetti whose original works are shown in the show. The three bright colored Arazzi embroidered alphabet reference collective experiences and structural protocols conducive to the variation of their form, thus resolutely retain its connection to the colour sensibility of the Afghan women who made them.
By inviting Moroccan artisans to deconstruct and to re-weave a Jouy fabric, the work Fabric (2013) by Philippe Terrier-Hermann echoes some of the principles found in Boetti’s process. Contemporary works by artists Fay Nicolson A P E L (II) (2013) and André Guedes Les Nouveaux Rouges (II) (2013) are speculations on the forms and writings of their antecedents and not mere transcriptions of past works.
Works by Marie-Ange Guilleminot, Baptist Coelho and Joël Andrianomearisoa are imbued with troubling memories. In Kimono memories of Hiroshima (2005), Marie-Ange Guilleminot transposes onto traditional kimonos the patterns and shapes of the garments of the Hiroshima victims. The Hiroshima garments emerge as a delicate shadow against the backdrop of history and the literal backdrop of fabric. Baptist Coelho was similarly moved by the conditions of Indian soldiers in the white planes of Siachen Glacier, one of the most remote battlegrounds in the world. In "Beneath it all… I am human…" (2009), Coelho uses discarded uniforms to restore humanity to the soldiers. Coelho’s installation likewise bears the traces of a missing body, of abandoned garments and echoes other works installed in the show. The reference to garments in Charlotte Beaudry’s painting and Jimmy Robert’s performance confronts us with an absence, a solitary dance, the traces of an existence : such are the exhibited works connected by a thread that passes through and across cultures and time.
Cotton threads, fabrics and velvet are the primary materials in the sculptural works of Hemali Bhuta, Prajakta Potnis, Anita Dube and Caroline Achaintre. Textile is all about touching and interlacing threads with dancing fingers. The making process involves a direct contact with material by which to inscribe various references in its layers. Whereas Caroline Achaintre’s tapestries Roofos (2013) tread the line between the primitive and the carnavalesque, Hairarchy (2007) by Hemali Bhuta uses material that are wielded during rituals in India. The immersive installation by Prajakta Potnis turns the staircase into a surface on which delicate black threads run, giving the impression of a disintegrating system and a corrosive contamination from within. Also addressing the architectural space is the work of Erwan Maheo. Installed in the pool area, Maheo’s nomadic museum functions as a stage curtain that explores the internal and external boundaries of the house.

What does it mean for an artist to “survive” in a tough economic climate? Can business ever be “bad” for a diligently working artist? Making an honest living ---in a group show like NO OTHER, these artists, some legendary and some suitably hungry, will dissolve the line between utility and luxury for an exhibition entitled, "GO GET YOUR SHINEBOX".
If you’ve spent time in a "third world country", you’ve had a chance to see kids carrying ingeniously designed work boxes, set up for
shinning shoes. We find that the variety and exuberance of these objects perfectly captures our world climate.
With the global economic downturn and the hardship it has caused blue-collar workers throughout, we find it fitting to explore the
world’s simplest way to make a living— SHINNING SHOES. We are planning an exhibition around just that-- SHOESHINE BOXES.
However a "SHOESHINE BOX" should not be taken in the most literal sense of the words. These objects, our inspiration, have all been created out of necessity- a need to earn money, or further, to survive. We push “the need to survive” beyond its literal context, commissioning our favorite established and emerging artists to design their own, "SURVIVAL BOXES".
A shoeshine box is a medium, a framework, the boundaries of which have not been pushed ...till now.

All the participants were given a 6 X 6 inches fabric support to embellish or alter their way. Here are three last propaganda pieces I made for an upcoming show in Detroit.
And now that I have featured pretty much all of my favorite animals and slogan variations, I think I am going to officially consider this series CLOSED.
Expect to see these pop up in my Etsy store very soon.

Today I took my paintings down to Galatea Fine Art because they will be included in a group show called "Sense of Place." This is the postcard for the show. My painting, "Clouds over Purple Mountain," is in the lower left corner. The show will be up July 1 - 31, with an opening on July 1, 6-8 pm. Muse exhibition program
Group show
18.04 > 16.05.2013
Exhibition curated by Emmanuel Lambion
With Jacques André, Helene Appel, Steven Baelen, Charlotte Beaudry, Roxane Borujerdi, Aline Bouvy & John Gillis, Lucia Bru, Liudvikas Buklys, Elisabeth S. Clark, Joachim Coucke, Yael Davids, Koenraad Dedobbeleer, Edith Dekyndt, Simona Denicolai & Ivo Provoost, Aleksandra Domanovic, Jean-Pascal Flavien, Dominique Ghesquière, Sofie Haesaerts, Camille Henrot, Karl Holmqvist, Hedwig Houben, Ann Veronica Janssens, Khaled Jarrar, Renaud Jerez, Eleni Kamma, Ermias Kifleyesus, Erwan Mahéo, Valérie Mannaerts, Jonathan Monk, Adrian Paci, Manfred Pernice, Jimmy Robert, Jani Ruscica, Fabrice Samyn, Martin Skauen, Nuno Sousa Vieira, Philippe Terrier-Hermann, Tatiana Trouvé, Maarten Vanden Eynde and Heidi Voet.
For the first occurrence of Muse exhibition program, Nathalie Guiot, a former journalist and publisher, who is also producing Experienz, a new performance platform at Brussels' Wiels contemporary art centre, has invited curator Emmanuel Lambion to organise an exhibition in her house, built in 2002 by Marc Corbiau. The exhibition combines a selection of works from her own collection with others specifically chosen (or produced) to integrate the very special space of this landmark of contemporary architecture: a concrete bunker facing the Verrewinkel wood, in Uccle, on the outskirts of the Brussels region. Beyond the generic theme of the exhibition, which will be developed herewith, specific directions such as the dialectical tension between nature and artefact, between art and architecture, together with reflections on the creative process and the value of a work of art are all possible entries to apprehend this exhibition, which is dense and eclectic, mixing videos, drawings, paintings and sculptures.
