Some rude ones amongst them....the sort with 4 cameras around their necks AND big bags on their backs. I actually spun one around like a top as be barged in front of me and almost knocked my camera from my hands, Clowns are no longer a laughing matter.....

Joseph Grimaldi, who was born in Clerkenwell and is regarded as the father of modern clowning, is buried in the former burial ground of St James Episcopal Chapel just off Pentonville Road, which is now a part of Joseph Grimaldi Park. His costume and make-up - mimicking black hair and exaggerating the size of his nose and lips - are a reminder that white mimicking of black people is often highly disrespectful.
Even more disrespectful is the tradition of minstrelcy, especially when it culminated in the TV show The Black and White Minstrels in which white people blacked themselves up but with white make-up to emphasise the eyes and lips. And not just white people; Lenny Henry's career started with the Black and White Minstrels, something he has long regretted. TV was not the only culprit; advertising often represented black people as clownish or foolish, and a popular form of entertainment at one time was the "Coon Song".
However one black man who did take on the circus tradition on his own terms was Pablo Fanque, the only black circus leader in Britain and, many would argue, the best. His animal trainers were also black and would go personally to Africa to select animals for the circus - no doubt they had an advantage when dealing with African hunters and traders. Pablo Fanque is largely forgotten today, but gets a mention on the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album, being the inspiration for "For the Benefit of Mr. Kite" after John Lennon came across a poster for Fanque's Circus Royal in a shop in Sevenoaks.
