I was lucky enough to witness the birth of a live Grevy's Zebra (Equus grevyi) foal in the wild in 2009. Grevy's zebra is endangered, with only abou 2500 individuals remaining in the wild. The birth is described and discussed in a scientific paper published in the journal Ethology. The paper is available at www.blaircostelloe.com/Research. To my knowledge, this is the only documented observation of a wild Grevy's zebra birth to date.
Taken in Masai Mara, Kenya, Africa.
The Grevy's zebra is an endangered species. It is horse-like with big, broad, rounded ears. Long, narrow head, very narrow & numerous stripes on body and legs. Belly is usually pure white.
The GRANT'S ZEBRA (equus burchelli bohmi) stripes go across the belly. They are not endangered.

This is a detail of a first edition lino block print of two zebras. The one on the left is known as Grevy's zebra and the one on the right is known as Burchell's zebra (shown here). These are carved on a single block, and printed in black water-based ink on Japanese kozo, or mulberry paper. The sheets are 14 inches wide and 8 inches tall (35.6 cm by 20.3 cm).

A visit to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park on the outskirts of Doncaster, Sunday 4th October 2020. The centrepiece of the Into Africa zone is African Plains, a large multi-species paddock themed around the African savannah. Species in the enclosure include ostriches, a mixed group of Rothschild's giraffe and Reticulated giraffe, lechwe, grevy's zebra and common eland. The Grévy's zebra is the largest living wild equid and the largest and most threatened of the three species of zebra.
