Burnaby BC. This season has been good for Green Heron. There are reported sightings all over the lower mainland.
Lush shades of green on this steep hillside in the high altitude sunlight on a short day of winter. Zoom in for the texture.

Last in the series. I know the tea keeps looking different which I'll have to work on if I do something like this again.

When I first saw this tiny butterfly in Sweden my initial thoughts were that it was a Small Blue (Cupido minimus) but its upperside had too much blue, and that underside hindwing had almost no spots. I then realised it was a Green-underside Blue (Glaucopsyche alexis) which is in the same genus as Large Blue (Glaucopsyche arion). But this really was a small butterfly, only marginally larger than a Small Blue. The name Green -underside comes from a flush of green at the base of the underside hindwings but this feature is variable and it isn't really visible here. Another characteristic of Scandinavian butterflies is the paucity of hindwing spots, which are usually more extensive further south in Europe. Its caterpillars feed on various vetches (members of the pea family) and it is found throughout much of Europe including southern Scandinavia. There is a single puzzling record from Torquay in Devon in September 1936. I say puzzling because this butterfly is not known to migrate and it only has one spring/summer emergence between April and July.
Bill and I went to a pond recommended by our friend Yamil, who in turn was recommended by Larry Selman, a Santa Cruz bird photographer (I love Larry's tagline - "bird photography - a passion bordering on obsession")
The pond is inside a mobile-home park in a laid-back /mellow forested city named Scotts Valley. Full of swans (including black swans), and some surprise birds - such as this green heron.
Like all green herons, this one took off for points unknown as soon as we got within 20 feet. But...it was a small pond and as it stalked for fish it slow....ly came back to where we patiently waited for it. I missed the fish capture, which came out blurry, but got this. Got to love a bird that stays so still we could take f21 exposures at a 1/15th of a second. An ecstatically, fabulously, wonderful morning - all those karma points I've earned paid off.
We shot until the pond fountains came on. Gotta love it.
In this shot, the heron's looking at us. I think I prefer that, to shots where the heron is looking down for fish.
Winter is green season after some rains. Many plants have now flowers again after a hot and dry summer. This is the time to plant cool season veggies like lettuce, radishes, etc..The view from the house towards the Ebro valley.

A beautiful and vivid green group of stalactites, the formations that grow downward in a cave. Note personat the bottom ofphoto for scale.
A stalactite (from Ancient Greek σταλακτός (stalaktós) 'dripping', from σταλάσσειν (stalássein) 'to drip') is a mineral formation that hangs from the ceiling of caves, hot springs, or man-made structures such as bridges and mines. Any material that is soluble and that can be deposited as a colloid, or is in suspension, or is capable of being melted, may form a stalactite. Stalactites may be composed of lava, minerals, mud, peat, pitch, sand, sinter, and amberat (crystallized urine of pack rats) A stalactite is not necessarily a speleothem, though speleothems are the most common form of stalactite because of the abundance of limestone caves.
As you all know I am always looking for something different in cat photos and this the last in this series of images of Shadow and my favourite one out of the three, when I had this idea of just the eyes in colour I didn't realize how striking those eyes would be, I hope you all agree!
