Designed by S.E. Maxon of Council Bluffs, who also designed the Fremont County Courthouse in Sidney. A gazebo that was once located on the south lawn burned during a World War I victory celebration, and cannons that decorated the east and west entrances were relegated to World War II scrap drives and melted down.
The courthouse, along with other spots in and around Greenfield, were featured in the 1971 movie "Cold Turkey", a far-fetched tale of a tobacco magnate offering $25 million to the town if its citizens could all quit smoking for 30 days.

The building was built by Amos Helphenstine and completed in 1891. It was originally a hardware store and in the 1970's was a dry goods a/k/a clothing store. The brick was fired in kiln in Greenfield and the stonework was hewn in South Greenfield. The metal front was manufactured by Mesker Brother's of St. Louis.

Greenfield is in Blaine County about nine miles southeast of Watonga. It is named after William Henry Greenfield, the first postmaster in 1900. Despite being established in 1892, the first census wasn't taken until 1940 when the population was 303. It has since dwindled to less than 100.
