"The original mill was built in the late 1600s, and it remained in operation until 1925.
The Spofford sawmill dates to the days when nearly everything -- from homes to household goods -- was made of wood.
John or Abner Spofford built this sawmill in Georgetown, Massachusetts. Lumber from this sawmill was used to make houses, barns, shops, and maybe even ships. It remained in the Spofford family until the mid-1800s. Although sawmills like this one started to decline in the United States, local farmers who needed lumber probably helped the Spofford Sawmill stay in business.
