Next to the great kiskadees and the plain chachalacas, this is the other extremely vociferous bird of the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Green jays can be very, very loud as they adeptly move through the thick scrub brush.

Trogon viridis
One of the yellow-bellied trogons, the Green-backed Trogon, Trogon viridis, is widely found in Amazonia with disjunct populations in southeastern coastal Brazil and on the island of Trinidad. Until recently, these populations were classified as subspecies of White-tailed Trogon, though mitochondrial gene analysis and differences in voice and plumage served as evidence in the acceptance of this as a distinct species.
An immature Green Heron eyes me with caution while simultaneously keeping an eye open for a meal along the banks of a pond at Milliken and Company in Spartanburg, SC.
Nothing new to most of you but after a 5 year drought this is the first time I've seen our hillsides this green. Of course I had to stop the car and take a photo. It makes me feel as if I live in England or Ireland and I love it.

A moth about half an inch long, found in South Texas. I didn't get a good shot of his top side, but here is one from before. I love his antennae and that cute face.

I thought to break the pattern of urban images I have been posting recently with a throwback to my visit to Madeira in December. This was taken on a Levada hike in the heart of the island. The inner part of the island has its own climate - wet, moist and colder than the coast. But this is why the green is so intense and saturated. I miss greenery, and look forward to spring :)
