The obvious question is: how can you tell? Actually, if you over saturate color pictures of the moon, you get interesting colors... Some of which may actually be there!

Have you ever clicked on the "grayscale" application before you print a picture? It ends up looking something like this.
This is a test of my waterproof ink pens. I found I could get a nice range of grays by using one or two coats of various inks. Some of the combinations are similar, but I can get at least seven step grayscale from the paper color to black.
