This Black Necked Stilt looks like it should fall over standing with all its weight to one side. It was catching some quick power naps, I do that a lot too, usually right in the middle of doing something else.

Another shot from an OffShoot outing to the Petit Volant circus and performing arts centre in Sandyford, Dublin earlier this year.
"I believe there’s nothing like flying. Dancing and playing in the air provide a unique feeling of freedom, peace and accomplishment. I also believe that circus is for everyone, regardless of age, gender or size. It’s a place for collective joy, where the limits are our imagination."
Mari Rampazzo, Petit Volant owner

Gravity
Stop pullin' me
I know that you still haven't found you,
And when I wanna stand on my own too,
Suddenly you start to show
Signs of what is possible...
Pixie Lott, Gravity
What is true freedom? How important is it? It really makes me wonder. We're born into this world constrained by nature. It's a beautiful union where parenthood ensures safety. It keeps one safe until you're strong enough to handle the world. No wonder the first steps into the big world feels like a leap of freedom. One can be prepared for many dangers in life, but have we forgotten our freedom? We're forced into contracts on every corner by almost everyone, every entity, societies, housing and work. These gravities try to claim freedom in various grades. What collateral is there? Is it a thing? Is it your money? Is it your time Is it your privacy or is it in fact you? It's often give or take....you gain something by giving in for a certain amount of gravity which pulls you just a little bit closer to the ground. Often one's put in a position where you'll have to consider how much that little piece of your freedom is worth. Eventually, one will struggle to keep aloft.

A view from Miner's Ridge Trail, Prairie Creek. Redwood National Park.
To answer a question concerning the title, from someone who is "curious".
No.....just many living tons, standing hundreds of feet tall on their roots and base.
Redwood trees don't senesce. The tree dies, (after up to thousands of years), when blown over by a big wind, (hundred year storm?), demonstrating the "gravity" of their situation, in more ways than one.
High up In the canopy, and located in the crooks of human trunk sized limbs, are large fern "gardens", complete with year long pools containing fairy shrimp and a unique salamander which feed on them. These gardens, with plants, animals, duff and soil, but not including the tree itself, may each weigh up to a ton.
"And make us as Newton was, who in his garden watching
The apple falling towards England, became aware
Between himself and her of an eternal tie."
— Wystan Hugh Auden

Avalanche Lake, High Peaks Wilderness, NY
Soon the sun will clear the far cliffs, too bright for my eyes, and I will turn away from this scene, although no longer in shadow. This saddle between Mt Colden (left) and Avalanche Mountain is a rugged notch, not so much a destination as a traverse to destinations beyond. There is water before me: Avalanche Lake lies under the snow beyond the tree stumps, it's waters lifted over the years by landslides and rockfalls. The course of water down these cliffs is obvious now, snow blown crevices and icefalls stand in relief, expanding and contracting on the rock to break it from the mass on it's own downward journey. Neither the rock or the water can resist the downward attraction. Like other things, I've taken that great force for granted. Not thinking of how my very act of standing is in defiance of it's pull, I stand here shivering in the cold. I don't see the cold, but I feel it and look at it's results. Temperature, invisble, reveals gravity, frozen.
Thanks to Karin and Chri for their helping hands and of course thanks to Alex for fooling the gravity! :-)
It's been a very busy past couple of weeks at work, which always leaves me feeling a bit uninspired. I'm heading to New York for a few days, which I hope helps restore my creative energy. I hope everyone is having a great week :)

I call this piece Gravity. It took me forever to move this heavy stone into place. I broke three sticks trying to pry it into place.
In support of the Inspire Foundation and to help raise funds and awareness for the prevention of suicide and improvement of mental health and well being in men, the "Man Book" was launched today. Put together by the very inspiring Mark Pollard and Gavin Heaton, the book titled The Perfect Gift for a Man – 30 Stories about Reinventing Manhood, focuses on the stories of 30 contributors on topics such as respect, fragility and loss. Although I didn't manage to write anything for the book, I was honoured to play a part through my contribution as a photographer. 2 images, destined to spend the rest of their lives on my hard drive, were given life and purpose again through use on the front cover and within the book! - www.kevin-palmer.com - After the northern lights began to fade and the clouds cleared, a strange wave pattern became visible in the sky. This is airglow, a chemical reaction that occurs at the same altitude as the aurora, but it's a separate process. This night was the only time I've ever seen it with the naked eye. I'm pretty sure it was caused by gravity waves from powerful severe thunderstorms that impacted Illinois earlier in the evening.
For many years the Ffestiniog Railway ran gravity powered slate trains from the quarries at Blaenau Ffestiniog down to the sea for export. After unloading, the empty wagons were returned to Blaenau using horse power and, in later years, steam locomotives. Here is a recreation of such a working passing through Minffordd at about 10 mph.

And then I looked up at the sun, and I could see
Oh, the way that gravity pulls on you and me
And then I looked up at the sky and saw the sun
And the way that gravity pushes on everyone
On everyone
Shot at Junction Falls a few weeks ago. A stunning waterfall in New South Wales Blue Mountains.
Hope you like "Gravity"

This is a moderately close shot of the side of an old railroad car, sitting for decades exposed to rain, snow, wind, and most importantly, gravity. As a result, the paint is streaking, blistering and sagging. Barring man's interference, I wonder what this will be in 500 or 5000 years? In the yard at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, Strasburg, PA.
