Abstract
Theoretical insights from black hole physics combined with recent developments in string theory suggest that at a microscopic level the Universe has a holographic description in terms of degrees of freedom that live on the boundary of space. This is called the "holographic principle". By taking the holographic principle as starting point a simple dimensional argument naturally leads to the emergence of gravity as described by the laws of Newton, or after a relativistic
generalization by the Einstein equations. At a microscopic level the gravitational force is caused by a change in the amount of information, measured by entropy, as a result of the displacements of bodies. Hence, gravity is an entropic force. String theory provides an effective framework in which the entropic origin of gravity can be made manifest. Finally, I discuss the possible implications for quantum mechanics and cosmology.

Possibly my favorite stamp in this science series. They came with a book that you were supposed to affix the stamps into, and every so often I find a book where the stamps haven't been used. I've seen a few different ones on indie rocker's guitars in the 90s.

Gravity was platted in 1881 on a treeless cornfield upon the arrival of the Humeston & Shenandoah Railway and incorporated two years later. The town was named after a post office located nearby but the origin of the Gravity name is apparently lost to time. The building was demolished in May 2022.
The original gravity is the potential amount of alcohol to beer can contain. My wort came out to 1.060 or roughly 8% potential ABV. It'll certainly be lower than that.

One of the real catches with designing stuff for telescopes is that gravity doesn't always point down. This instrument points anywhere from straight up to only 20 degrees off the horizon. So "down" can mean a lot of things.
We were testing a new filter change mechanism, and needed a way to simulate gravity on the moving parts. The filters for this weigh about ten pounds each, so we needed a way to mount a force gauge to the side of the instrument so we could repeatably introduce a ten pound load.
I got to spend a little time building the mount for this. It was a good day.

Gravity, Seismic Ray and Stasis are sculptures that aesthetically come together to advance a new plateau for the art of bronze. In these three dimensional configurations which explore the FOUNDATIONS OF SYNERGY, Snowden establishes her own vocabulary in describing energy pattern phenomena and laws of physics that permeate the universe. Through a singular focus on the possibilities of gravity-pour lost wax bronze, the sculptor has been able to transform abstract contemporary science into an art of lustrous physical vitality and spiritual connection.
Gravity, as a sculptural meditation, expresses M.L. Snowden’s central idea that the very substance of humankind, stars, planetary masses and bronze are created of the same interrelated yet differently arranged elements. Just as humankind is the expression of the physical universe, so is bronze metallurgy a celebration of these same integrated forces; indeed, for Snowden, the working processes that heat the bronze foundry are mirrored in titanic geological phenomena happening deep within the earth’s core.
Using no models or references to express form, Snowden has invented a composition that invites us to contemplate Gravity in multiple ways.
In the sculptor’s visual language, the lower figure can be thought to embody Gravity - in its free fall suspension, the lower tier creates the illusion that it is exerting the full force of its downward weight upon the bronze structure. The upper figure opposes being brought down by Gravity in an affirmative action that seems to strive toward the light. Indeed, this upper portrait is riveted on the heavens. Reviewing the sculpture, the lower figure exerts a downward force while the upper lifts skyward on limbs that clutch and depend upon the lower tier. Within the braced hands lies a nexus of condensed power. Here, Gravity and its effect is described as a synergistic union of elements. The sculpture suggests a balanced scale. In looking over these compositional oppositions, it is possible to see the program and intention of the sculpture reaching out. Here are written anabolic and catabolic forces at work through all the universe and creation; in this bronze, yin and yang, life and death; the central striving of humankind are intimated. The composition describes a state of being beyond a struggle: it is an eternal portrait of humankind’s will toward ascendency against all odds to the point where both figures within the composition rise in floatation and elevation. In Gravity, we may indeed see something of our own will to succeed. Here within the bronze is an expression of sustained achievement. Within this meditation, humankind is defined by its opposition. Within the portrait of the balanced scale, Gravity is necessary to the formation and sustenance of humankind.
Gravity is based upon a mathematical calculation that allows the entire bronze structure to almost float, ultimately almost defying Gravity. The total weight mass is mortised on the smallest cap of extrusion that is possible to support the structure in connecting the bronze to its base. Snowden’s Gravity is defined by myriad negative spaces within ever changing alignments that in certain lights, cast shadows on walls, speaking of the mystery of forces that while seemingly immaterial, wield powerful influences on the world.
From important roots in the Paris studios of Auguste Rodin and Antonin Mercié, Snowden brings to Gravity the glowing luminous platinum Fournier Patina and the touch of the historic Rodin tools that were used to shape the dynamic planes of the sculpture.
ABOUT THE ARTIST...
M.L. Snowden is a third generation protegé of the great French sculptor, Auguste Rodin and the inheritor of Rodin’s sculptural techniques and original sculpting tools, which she uses in her own work. Her sculpture has been shown in museums around the world and is in the permanent collection of The White House. Snowden has received numerous awards including being named the world winner of the 1992 International Rodin Competition in Tokyo, Japan. In 1989, at the age of 36, Snowden was awarded the National Sculpture Society’s inaugural Alex Ettl Grant for “Lifetime Achievement in American Sculpture.” Snowden’s commissions include the Main Altar of the $200 million Los Angeles Cathedral.
On March 31 2012, I was given the privilege of being able to ride on the Ffestiniog railway`s gravity train as a specially-invited brakesman..
It was an unique experience for me having the sensation of riding down on these wagons from the summit at Tanygrisiau power house to Minffordd, something that my grandfather could well have done when used to work at Maenofferen quarry.
