La chiocciola è un animale invertebrato appartenente al phylum dei molluschi. Si trascina con il piede e utilizza il guscio come difesa da condizioni climatiche sfavorevoli e da pericoli esterni.

La conchiglia si forma con una sostanza detta conchiolina che l'animale stesso produce. Nella lingua ci sono delle fasce di accrescimento che diventano sempre più larghe verso l'esterno e formano la tipica spirale che si arrotola sempre in senso antiorario. La parte del corpo che striscia sul terreno e permette i movimenti e le ritirate grazie ad un forte muscolo si chiama piede. Sul capo ha quattro tentacoli: due antenne che portano gli occhi e due tentacoli tattili come organi di senso. Tra i due tentacoli tattili c'è la bocca che contiene un organo simile ad una lingua (radula) munito di tanti denti microscopici con cui l'animale grattugia il cibo prima di ingoiarlo.

La specie mediterranea più comune è l'Helix aspersa. Un primato per questi gasteropodi è detenuto dall'Achatina, una specie molto grande che raggiunge i 20 cm di lunghezza.

Chiocciola ritirataLa chiocciola è un animale dal carattere assai cauto e timido in quanto si ritira appena sente il primo segnale di pericolo.

Quando vengono anche solo sfiorate le antenne, queste si ritraggono istantaneamente. È molto nota la sua lentezza nei movimenti (7/8 metri all'ora, corrispondenti a 0.007 km/h). Si trascina per il piede ed usa una bava argentea come lubrificante per evitare di ferirsi. Le secrezioni della chiocciola servono anche a formare l'epifragma nel momento in cui l'animale si ritira nel suo guscio.

The word snail is a common name for almost all members of the molluscan class Gastropoda that have coiled shells in the adult stage. When the word snail is used in a general sense, it includes sea snails, land snails and freshwater snails. Snails lacking a shell or having only a very small one are usually called slugs. Snails that have a broadly conical shell that is not coiled or appears not to be coiled are usually known as limpets.

Snails can be found in a wide range of environments from ditches, deserts, and the abyssal depths of the sea. Although most people are familiar with terrestrial snails, land snails are in the minority. Marine snails have much greater diversity and a greater biomass. The great majority of snail species are marine. Numerous kinds can be found in fresh water and even brackish water. Many snails are herbivorous, though a few land species and many marine species are omnivores or predatory carnivores.

Snails that respire using a lung belong to the group Pulmonata, while those with gills form a paraphyletic group; in other words, snails with gills are divided into a number of taxonomic groups that are not very closely related. Snails with lungs and with gills have diversified widely enough over geological time that a few species with gills can be found on land, numerous species with a lung can be found in freshwater, and a few species with a lung can be found in the sea.
