Just in case the world runs out of keyboards, ink and biros etc. I really do still prefer to write in longhand with pencils. Love Pencils.

Not sure what kind of dog this is, but it might be a Maltese dog. I googled bowing dogs and this one took my fancy!! Hope y'all like it!

Yum'ekorr was the second pass we tackled on our backpacking trip. Its funnel shape and proximity to Lake Imandra yielded memorable wind gusts.

A quick pencil drawing today. Hope you like her!

Using the 3.5" square Italian paper. I have used Nexus colored pens, Staedtler Mars Pens, and Stabilo Pens-on sell at Dick Blick stores. Micron Pen 01. Staedtler Tech Pen.

You can use any pen that does well on the paper.

I did an experiment yesterday. I drew a cat in my new A3 pad but then decided to see how it ended up if I copied the same cat photo in my A4 pad (which has a rougher texture as well as being smaller) Both were enjoyable in their own way!

Smoothest graphite pencils I've ever tried

This photo from Sasastro inspired a drawing today, of a young woman reading a book with the title 'Selfie'!! I liked the smile she had on her face in the photo, as she was reading it. The detail is a bit rough, but I'm trying to use up some paper I'm not quite so keen on!!

Another attempt at one of my favourite film actors, Meg Ryan. This is for John, who is also a fan of her movies.

I recently revisited drawing backs and hair - not sure if it's any better than the first time, but I thought I'd give it a go on slightly coloured paper this time.

My friend Liz is feeling under the weather at the moment, so I messaged this picture to her - she says she thinks she wants to buy it! Will see her when she's better and find out if she is still interested! Tabby cat drawn on A3, which is becoming my favourite size now!!

Another back view so I could practise drawing hair. I rather like very loose buns - nothing too severe!

art outside the edge

I approach every form of artwork in different ways, and currently I'm back using my coloured pencils again, but when I do a drawing in either graphite pencils or charcoal, this is kind of how the picture evolves.

I start with a general shape, in the hope I get the scale right. Next stage is to get some pencil on that I can blend to get some shadow and to work out where the highlights should be. Finally, it's the detail stage. Lots more blending and adding (and taking away) is done and eventually I have my picture!!

I have not done any sketching in ages and need more practice! :)

I have a number of graphite pencils (Faber-Castell, Staedtler, Derwent) and this is the latest aquisition = ASAS... "Art Supplies Aquisition Syndrome" as well as 'brand loyalty' :)

I 'grew up' with Caran d'Ache and so just had to try the GRAPHITE LINE www.carandache.com/ch/en/graphite-pencils/box-of-6-hardne... . Nice :)

This is a very nice pencil in a nice metal box with foam padding. It glides easily across my Stillman & Birn sketch book. I like the shaded barrels which make it easy to find the required grades. Also, the pencils are a bit thicker in diameter than all other pencils, apart from the formative children's pencils I still have.

The one disadvantage of the thicker barrels is that the pencils don't seem fit into any of the pencil sharpeners I have, with the small hole being too small, the larger hole being too large and not making the nice long tip the pencils originally came with. I am resorting to sharpening these pencils with a scalpel, which needs some practice, and the scalpel is viciously sharp!

A Caran d'Ache pencil sharpener machine is available, but it is EXPENSIVE and, unless I could sell my work eventually for a good price (highly unlikely) not really an option for me. www.theartgearguide.com/home/caran-dache-sharpener-review

Magnesium double hole sharpeners are available but, at this stage, I am not sure whether they are suitable for this kind of pencil.

Arrgh... that little jar on the right looks quite wrong ... :)

One of my favourite programmes is Strictly Come Dancing, and It means cosy Saturday evenings with the curtains closed and the fire on (if we can afford the heating this winter!). Tim and JJ aren't interested but this is one guilty pleasure I'm not willing to give up!

Here's a drawing I did - back to greyscale! I'm not sure which I enjoy most but I feel I have more control in graphite pencil and enjoy looking at colour more!!

Graphite on Hahnemühle Nostalgie.

As you can see from this drawing, although I get a lot of my inspiration from Google images, I often adapt them to suit myself!

While visiting Japan in early March, I saw a show in which a photographer had been asked to shoot simple original still life pictures of glassware and various artists take-offs on their choice of one of the reference sources (all extremely diverse paintings/drawings, etc.) I took pictures of the glassware that had been brought to the gallery and set up on tables. And decided to make this drawing based on my fave image. I had a go at an A3 drawing of Diane Morgan. I have seen her in 'Motherland' and 'After Life'. Not my best, but not my worst, lol!

Diane Morgan is an English actress, comedian, and writer. She is best known for playing Philomena Cunk on Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe, as Liz in the BBC Two sitcom Motherland and Kath in the Netflix dark comedy series After Life. Morgan also wrote and starred in the BBC Two comedy series Mandy.

I wanted to have some practice drawing hair, so here's the back view of a pretty, slim woman! I put the drawing pad on the floor to take a photo and rather liked the shadow of the net curtains on the paper!

Playing with a theme that I used years ago in a small series of watercolors. This is a cropped image from an 8 x 6 inch page.

This was based on a photo of Helena Bonham-Carter, but I realise I haven't got her quite right. She's just a woman who looks quite glamorous!!

A drawing inspired by a digital drawing I'd seen on Instagram at some point. We often do have pizza on a Friday night as it's quick and easy! (Or we might have a takeaway, if JJ is feeling generous!)

Now on Etsy too!***

This is influenced by a drawing I saw on Instagram done in colour on an iPad. I thought I'd try and draw a similar young man in pencil. He actually reminds me a little of the Italian student ("Mr Nice Guy") who currently lives next door!

Richard Ayoade is a British actor, broadcaster, comedian, director and writer. He is best known for his role as the socially awkward IT technician Maurice Moss in Channel 4 sitcom The IT Crowd, but I enjoy him most in The Travel Man. Not many people on TV make me LOL, but he is one who does.

My first experience using 'Derwent Graphic 24' graphite pencils together with used before 'Koh-I Noor Progresso 6' graphite pencils and their Progresso 24 woodless coloured pencils.

I couldn't resist using fantasy colours on the three chicks, which really should be a pale brown.....

The ostrich is a record breaker in so many ways as detailed in Wikipedia - Ostrich.

The three baby ostriches are for Joan who is so disappointed that our three baby cygnets have not survived on our local fishpond.

And for Lenny who was wondering what my next creation would be.

This is inspired by my friend Tootdood's photo on Flickr. He takes a fine candid shot! I have altered the woman slightly, as I like to do, but it's based on the photo.

I have still been drawing when I have a couple of hours to spare, and at the moment I am drawing people mostly in my A5 drawing pad. This is a random woman who is cheekily sticking her tongue out!
