Basically, the thermal paste as installed in the factory had cracked, leading to overheating. I stripped down the card, polished off the old paste, replaced it with arctic silver, added arctic silver to other thermal joints that were not conductive enough, and added some stick-on heatsinks to the memory. End result: runs smooth, cool, and silent.
