It probably hasn't been long enough since my last one, but my lack of gold tars on the Dave & Dave group this week (the 2nd & 3rd pictures on this poster are from this week's assignment) severely damaged my self-esteem.

The secret is that I kept in six of the recently dropped to make this poster. All six are from Dave & Dave. Tell me: how do pictures at #64 drop out of Explore? That is one I never get! I can see #427, and maybe even #350, fluctuating in an out. But #64? How does it get to above 500 the next day? Or do I just still not get Explore, even after all the explanations?

That's it. I'm dense.

This is my older brother's creation. Blogged

Every so often I upload these to, I dunno, see what fickle tastes the machine has. I make them private less often. But since I joined Dave & Dave two months ago, I've had six pictures in explore, most only briefly. (The gold mask photo is missing today.)

I don't really understand the Interestingness phenomenon, even though I've read some amazing threads about it. It still boggles my mind as to how something like the strawberry tongue or the Vermom can sit at 30 for a week, then drop out entirely for a day. That it's even among the 500 is also fascinating. But that it has views in the thousands is incredible.

Hamantaschen cookies or Haman's ears and carnival masks for Purim celebration (jewish holiday).

The young man featured on this card was going to be celebrating his Bar Mitzvah on Purim. This Bar Mitzvah boy completed 12 hikes all around Israel over the course of the year before his big day and is going on a trek in Nepal very soon. I have shown the freckled young man hiking with his backpack and have added the Nepalese flag and landscape. Above the flag you can see a Megillat Esther (Book of Esther) scroll from which we read the Purim story and, since the Bar Mitzvah boy was celebrating on Purim itself, I have added some triangular-shaped Hamantashen, or Oznei Haman. I have also illustrated a gragger, or ra'ashan (from the Hebrew ra-ash, meaning "noise"), which is used to blot out the name of Haman, the culprit in the Purim story, when it is read out during the public chanting of the Megillah in the synagogue.

I remember being sure, when I was 20, that one should make his age, at least, in salary. It never happened that way. I haven't had a regular job in so long, and now I feel I'm worth a whole lot more than my age.

Now, at least I have flickr, with more than my age worth of photos in Explore. Fifty is the most I've had thus far. It's harder now than in the olden days of flickr, but it's cool to know that the whole top row came in the last three months—with my new camera. But four self-portraits? Sheesh. Looks like I have to get back to taking some real pictures.

OK, once my new camera is ready, I should have like a bazillion of these on a poster in no time. Right? Doesn't it make you a better photographer? I think there's actually a free picture-taker expert in the kit I got.

And doesn't Explore prove you're a great photographer? (Please note my sarcasm in both places.)

White bread dough waiting to be formed into hand semmel … they really taste better than machine formed semmel . Semmel are the traditional Austrian rolls.

Photos from Brotback Workshop organised by Slow Food Wien at the Gragger Holzofenbächerei (wood fired bakery) in the centre of Vienna. Interesting and fun evening with Helmut Gragger, who’s really a great guy. Be sure to visit his bakery and eat some real Austrian sourdough bread when you are in Vienna!

Semmel from our workshop. It’s not so easy to make a “hand semmel”. But they all tasted great!

Purim-spiel, March 2005

Congregation Eitz Or, Seattle

To drown out the name of Haman, you spin a gragger, or noisemaker. The front right shows a white metal gragger spinning in a circle. In the rear you can also see a yellow plastic hammer that makes noise when hit against an outstretchd hand.

About this series:

On the Jewish holiday of Purim, everyone dresses in costume, we read from the Scroll of Esther, and you're supposed to get so drunk that you can't even tell the difference between the bad guy in the story (Haman, hsss!) and the good guy (Mordechai). By taking this series of shots in modest indoor light hand-held, with no flash, I captured some of the blurry zaniness of how Purim feels -- and some surprisingly quiet moments, too.

Photo details for this series:

Canon EOS 20D with EF-S 17-85mm IS lens

Nearly all at f/5.6, ranging from 1/4 to 1/15 sec

Handheld, ISO 3200.

Custom white balance with incandescent light.

Cleaned up with Noise Ninja (great product!) and custom profile for 20D.
