At one time I thought I would not be able to fit the application into the limited number of ports available on two Leos. So I installed one of these: a LinkSprite port expander. It adds 16 GPIO ports via the i2c bus. There are now much smaller, more elegant breakout boards for this purpose. I ended up (barely) not needing it, but thought I would mention it as a useful option when you get short of I/O but don't want to spend the money on a Due.
