One of many public shares of the successful We the People petition for Open Access to taxpayer-funded research, from the first day of the petition, May 20, 2012 AKA "OA Monday." Edited Landsat 8 image of the volcano Waw an Namus in Libya.
Original caption: Seen from space, few other extinct volcanoes look as exotic and spectacular as Waw an Namus. The volcano, located deep in the Sahara Desert in the Fezzan region of southwestern Libya, appears as a smear of dark basaltic ash and tephra that contrasts sharply with the light-colored sand of the Sahara Desert.
The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured this view of the feature on May 29, 2015. While the precise date of the most recent eruption is not known, the lack of erosion and weathering implies that it probably occurred in the last few thousand years. South of the ash field, mud streams have begun the slow process of eroding the tephra and ash away. The ash field extends around a much smaller caldera that is about 4 kilometers (2 miles) wide. Calderas are hollowed-out circular depressions that form at the summit of volcanoes when magma is withdrawn or erupted from a shallow underground magma reservoir.
The lower image shows a closer view of the caldera. Within it, three small salty lakes ringed with vegetation are visible. The volcano gets its name from the lakes, which are reportedly home to thriving communities of mosquitos. (In Arabic, Waw an Namus means “crater of mosquitos.”) The edge of a cinder cone is also visible near the center of the caldera. Cinder cones are steep, conical hills that accumulate around volcanic vents. They are made from small glassy rock fragments that pile up around vents as ash and congealed lava erupts.
The beauty and unique appearance of Waw an Namus has long fascinated travelers. In 1969, anthropologist Froelich Rainey described the feature this way:
The whole effect of Waw an Namus is weird. Quite suddenly we seemed to be in the shadow of a cloud, but the sky was clear and looking closely at the desert sand I noticed that it had changed from yellow to black with a thin surface layer of what looked like coal cinders. Then, after crossing about ten kilometers of this black desert, and without warning, we were abruptly halted by a huge crater perhaps three kilometers in diameter. In the center rose a brown volcanic cone surrounded by a series of narrow crescent-shaped blue lakes. There were occasional date palms and bamboo growing about the lakes and one small hut. The dark sand, the isolation, and the obvious record of what had happened there all contributed to the awesome spectacle before us.

Yesterday I was just thinking about some new location and then the little bridge just some 100m away came through my head. It's just a small bridge across a little creek so the space down there was limited too.

“Skype screen share becomes premium; Google+ Hangout = free;” $MSFT $GOOG
I just went onto Skype to screen share for a conference but apparently after Microsoft bought Skype, all these features which used to be free comes with a $ sign. You can’t even just pay with credit anymore. To use premium features you must subscribe to a monthly €6.99/month or annual plan: €3.49/month.
Thankfully you don’t need to stick with Skype. First off, for video conferencing I have found Apple’s FaceTime (free) to have the best quality so this is where I do the actual video conferencing, which is free. Google Plus’ Hangout (also free) supports screen share so that is what I use to share the actual screen.
Relying on monthly subscriptions to drive revenue is terrible. Companies can make more money doing data analytics for businesses, I think. But some companies are filled with financial advisors who just want to make quick easy bucks. Ah well, shortsighted business people abound.

Arachnophobes of the world beware, this is one blood-curdling sight: a monumental, 10-meter-high (33 feet) spider. It has taken up residence in downtown Zurich, Switzerland, where it dominates a lakeshore spot on Bürkliplatz.
The arachnid is a sculpture named ‘’Maman‘‘ (Mommy) by Franco-American artist Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010) and it’s one of the most popular pieces of contemporary art out there. Both in terms of size, and its effect on people, the bronze and stainless steel spider and its sac of marble eggs is no average piece of art.
On Wednesday night, leg-by-leg, the 11-ton monster was assembled under the watchful eye of a US specialist. It took seven people and two cranes to get the job done. The piece belongs to a private art collection. Before making it to Zurich, the spider spent some time in Bern, where it towered over the Bundesplatz, home of Switzerland’s federal parliament. On August 2, it will move on to Geneva.
The giant spider will then continue its Swiss tour in Basel, as the core piece of a retrospective devoted to Louise Bourgeois at the prestigious, Renzo Piano-designed Beyeler Foundation in the suburb of Riehen. The spider will be on display in the museum gardens for an exhibition that opens on September 3 and honors the 100 year anniversary of the artist's birth.

This is a memorial screencap of the moment 25,000 of us had signed the We the People petition to the White House for public access to publicly funded US research. Download its original size for a copy suitable for printing and framing, A4 or letter size in the US. Scientist and Open Access advocate David Liao, @lookatphysics on Twitter AKA "D. L. from Holmdel, NJ" on the petition, was the 25,000th signatory. The moment was captured, and first documented on Twitter @openscience and on Google+ by the Open Science Federation.
