Open-air museum Hagen, Westfalen, Germany. A romantic situated museum at the small stream Mäckingerbach" with a lot of ancient frame houses and workshops to visit. It offers interesting views of the interior of these buildings, most of the shops are still working showing old craftmanship.

Im Tal des Mäckingerbaches idyllisch gelegen, bietet es Rundgänge durch zahlreiche original wiederaufgebaute Werkstätten und Fachwerkhäuser. In der Mitte an Mühlteichen gelegen befinden sich noch mehrere Mühlen und Schmieden.

History

 

The construction of Baldwin Cottage, a small-dorm complement to stately Talcott which rose more or less simultaneously next door, began soon after the 1886 fire which destroyed the Second Ladies Hall. It was named for Elbert Baldwin, a Cleveland dry goods merchant from whom Adelia Field Johnston, Oberlin's leading woman administrator, extracted a gift of $20,000. The village paper announced that Baldwin would be done "in the Queen Anne style, with broken roof lines, with the effect of earlier colonial houses" -- language suggesting that wonderfully elastic range of "Queen Anne". Weary and Kramer's design reached for the informal intimacy of a cottage look through variety in massing, texture, and detail. The studied unexpectedness of Baldwin's shapes--its squat tower, its low double-arched entry porch, the broad and gentle slopes of its roof lines, the episodic placement of its windows and dormers--made it a local triumph in the art of organic irregularity popularized by Henry Hobson Richardson. The roofing material, a warm red diamond-shaped tile, introduced a theme that would govern the campus building projects for the next 45 years. Dark, rich woodwork helped carry a friendly "nook-and-cranny" mood through the interior, making Baldwin one of the most durably popular living places on the campus.

On another gritty Dublin backstreet - I thought at first there was someone- dead or alive - in the bag but there wasn’t.

To quote a Judas Priest song, Delivering the Goods, I think that is exactly what's happening here. As the southbound Coastal Classic crosses Upper Trail Lake into the tiny berg of Moose Pass all a passenger has to do is look out the window and be in awe of what they see before them. Unfortunately all days are not like this one especially this summer with the amount of rain we have received. 9.02.22

There is no main street in the settlement. Instead, a network of alleys connect the houses. It is often the case in Japanese seaside settlements since goods are transported by boat.

 

I suppose the short eaves of the local houses are a response to a limited availability of space, and vertical plank walls up to the roof are a response to the short eaves and windy climate in winter.

I did not get to climb aboard the Mather, but was enthralled with its size. Read more about the ship and its history:

If you'd been stood at this spot in December 1840 then you would have been at the entrance to the short lived Birmingham & Gloucester Railway's Birmingham Camp Hill station. When the extension to Curzon Street opened on 17 August 1841 the site became Camp Hill Goods station which operated until 7 February 1966. Today the area is now Camp Hill Industrial Estate and it was from beneath the Network Rail access gate that 56094 was captured at the head of 6Z64 Long Marston to Carlisle New Yard conveying 12 bogie tankers and moving much faster than I was expecting.

Hard to ignore this rocky natural leading line to the lighthouse!

 

The history of Cape Palliser Lighthouse:

Cape Palliser features prominently in Maori history and the legends of Kupe. The area also featured in the colonisation of New Zealand.

 

The rugged coast and notorious Cook Strait gales contributed to many early shipwrecks. Six months before the light was lit in 1897, a ship was wrecked within 4 miles of the new tower and 12 of the 21 crew drowned. While a light on Cape Palliser reduced the number of shipwrecks, the area still remained hazardous for the unwary.

 

The tower at Cape Palliser has been painted with red and white stripes to make it stand out from the hills behind it. There are only two other lighthouses in New Zealand with stripes, rather than the standard plain white. Dog Island Lighthouse and Cape Campbell Lighthouse have black and white stripes.

 

Operation of the Cape Palliser light:

Cape Palliser lighthouse is still fitted with the original Fresnel lens, which was installed in 1897.

 

In 1954 the light was converted from oil to diesel-generated electricity. In 1967 it was connected to mains electricity. A diesel-electric generator provides standby emergency power.

 

The lighthouse was automated and the keepers were withdrawn in 1986.

 

The light is monitored remotely from Maritime New Zealand’s Wellington office.

 

Life at Cape Palliser light station:

Owing to its isolation in the early days, life at Cape Palliser created its own unique problems for the keepers and their families.

 

The original access to the lighthouse was a dirt track up a 58 metre-high cliff. This was a dangerous walk for the keepers, especially in stormy weather.

 

In 1912 a set of 258 steps were built up to the tower, which provided the keepers with much safer access, although still a physically demanding walk.

 

Stores were delivered to the station every 3 months. If the seas were too rough, the stores could be landed at the more sheltered Kawakawa Bay, some 6 kilometres away. The Cape Palliser letter book is filled with countless tales of stores being lost during the unloading process.

 

With the storage buildings and keepers’ homes at sea level, the unloading was easier than at many other stations where goods had to be hauled up cliffs using a trolley on rails. The keepers still had to haul the light supplies (oil and kerosene) up the cliff face to the light station. They did this on a railway, using a hand winch.

 

When the lighthouse was eventually connected to the nearby settlements by road, keepers would collect their mail and supplies once a week from Pirinoa. (Courtesy www.maritimenz.govt.nz)
