It was a busy afternoon at Pine Ridge. Tal worked on his golf swing and I walked nine holes with him. While his company and the fresh air were most attractive, I also had something I wanted to try with the camera and Tal was going to be my assistant.
Stopping the club head and ball during a golf swing took some doing. First, I was too slow releasing the shutter. Secondly, I started out with not fast enough a shutter speed. In this image I was at 1/2500 of a second and it was a tad too slow. Both the club head and ball are in motion.
Eventually, I increased the ISO and set the camera on shutter priority at 1/4000. The results weren't great but they improved swing by swing and image by image. Also, by the time we set out with the golf bag on the push cart, we pretty much had the front nine to ourselves and I was able to make several images with less busyness in the background.
Yes - en route back from the Breede river mouth, we popped in to the incredible Bush Pub for a couple of drinks and some golf. You have to aim for this little target on top of the hill. We all failed.

Preliminary clay sculpting for 'Great Expectations' (the perfect golf swing finish). Obviously unfinished and in a very early stage of development, this sculpture will be used as a full size model for the planned woodcarving in butternut. Such works progress very slowly thru many stages... from rough pencil sketches, to sculptures in plastelina, to rough and then final woodcarvings. Unlike wood, clay is a wonderful and highly forgiving medium, which makes it a great three dimensional 'sketch' tool for subsequent woodcarvings. This clay is from Chavant, their plastelina clay called 'Clayette', which is a wonderful clay to work with, as is Prima from Sculpture House. For anyone interested in getting started in sculpting in clay these two are marvelous clays to work with. Of course there are also some very fine polymer clays available for those wishing to bake their finished pieces for more permanent sculptures.
