I am particularly enamoured with red leaves in autumn, so imagine my delight when yesterday on a stroll in the sunshine, I walked past a laneway and noticed a cascade of red leaves. On closer inspection I discovered that it was a wonderful ornamental vine, which protected from the wind by the properties around it, was stretching up to the blue sky, a mass of beautiful rich red and a few gold leaves, all basking in the light. With the curlicues from the vine, these leaves put me in mind of some of the beautiful foliate designs created during the Art Nouveau period at the turn of the Twentieth Century.
I think that autumn is often the best season for leaves. Whilst we all enjoy seeing new leaves in spring after the barren season of winter, it is in autumn that we get to see the leaves array themselves in their autumnal costumes.
Autumn is now well and truly with us here in Melbourne, and the cooler winds of seasonal change are blowing away the remnants of summer, like it tosses the red, gold and orange leaves that carpet the ground.
Yesterday was a lovely and sunny day, although cool. I thought I'd go for a walk and take advantage of the sunny conditions, as rain is expected tomorrow and for the next few days.
Autumn in Melbourne is always beautiful, with many wonderful deciduous trees full of colour like this Japanese Maple, one of my favourites, which I caught as it is starting to turn one on my walk today. These two tiny red leaves reminded me of a pair of earrings. Perhaps they are faerie earrings.

Autumn in Melbourne is always beautiful, with many wonderful deciduous trees full of colour like this Japanese Maple, one of my favourites, which I have been visiting regularly on my walks over the last month. It is now ablaze with the last of its beautiful reds, oranges and golds! And all too soon this autumnal ephemera will be gone until next year.
The day I took this photo was a lovely and sunny day with bright blue skies, although there was a crispness in the air. I thought I'd go for a walk and take advantage of the sunny conditions, as rain arrived the day after.
Autumn in Melbourne is always beautiful, with many wonderful deciduous trees full of colour like this Japanese Maple. When I took this photo, it was still mid autumn, so there were only some reds amongst the greens, which made they especially noticeable and attractive.
The day I took this photo was a lovely and sunny day with bright blue skies, one of many we had here in early and mid autumn. Now it is winter here, and very grey and overcast, so I felt a burst of colour was in order for today.

The other day was a perfect autumnal day in Melbourne: sunny, but not too bright, warm, but not hot, and perfectly still. Therefore I thought I'd go for a walk and take advantage of the sunny conditions and take some photographs. This includes these wonderful golden yellow English maple leaves in the inner northern Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy.
When I was a child, I was told by my beloved grandparents that the winged seed pods of English maple trees were translucent faerie wings waiting to be collected by their new owners.

As it is a very wintery and rainy day today, grey and overcast, I thought I would brighten things up with a bit of colour.

Autumn in Melbourne is always beautiful, with many wonderful deciduous trees full of colour like this one which I found in the inner Melbourne suburb of North Fitzroy. This leaf may be a little tattered and torn, but it is still beautiful. It reminded me of the line from the very old children’s nursery rhyme “Hark! Hark! The Dogs Do Bark” which talks about the beggars coming to town, with “some in tags, some in rags and some in velvet gowns”. Which of those do you think this leaf is?

Yesterday, although officially the second day of winter here, was a perfect autumnal day in Melbourne: partially sunny, but not too bright, warm, but not hot, and perfectly still. Therefore I thought I'd go for a walk and take advantage of the sunny conditions and take some photographs. This includes these wonderful golden yellow silver birch leaves which were hanging, catching the light, tumbling down like golden raindrops.

Autumn in Melbourne is always beautiful, with many wonderful deciduous trees full of colour like this Japanese Maple, one of my favourites, which I have been visiting regularly on my walks over the last few months. In late autumn, when I took this photo, it suddenly changed colour, going from green to rich velvety reds like this leaf, very quickly. All too soon it was ablaze with the last of its beautiful reds, oranges and golds.
The day I took this photo was a lovely and sunny autumnal day with bright blue skies, and was more spring like than autumn!
Autumn in Melbourne is always beautiful, with many wonderful deciduous trees full of colour like this Japanese Maple, one of my favourites, which I caught as it is starting to turn one on one of my walks the other week. This leaf puts me in mind of beautiful red patent shoe leather, and reminded me of the faerie tale The Goblin Cobblers (perhaps more commonly known as The Elves and the Shoemaker) by the Brothers Grimm.

I have taken several hundred, some of which I will upload over the coming months. However this one of the winged maple seeds which reminded me of by childhood in England particularly resonated with me, so I thought I would upload it without delay.

This leaf on our flagstone path caught my eye today. Well, I'm back and I'll be busy catching up with commenting on your photos over the next few days.
The State Capitol of Colorado, a Neo-Classical building constructed in 1908 of Colorado granite, has a gold-leafed dome commemorating the "gold rush" days of Colorado.
As Denver is known as the "Mile High City", the 13th step of the west entrance marks exactly one mile above sea level.
ADDT'L INFO: A dome restoration project begun in 2012 replaced the gold leaf, and restored the tower to its original color, more bluish than the main building. (Thanks Ian Turnbull, for your comment about the gold leaf).
For Macro Mondays 'wabi-sabi'
Wabi-sabi is a Japanese word roughly translating as 'imperfect aged beauty'. It is used to describe a particular philosophy that beauty can be found in the old, the everyday, the imperfect, broken and decaying subjects.
This is my mum's hymn book which measures just three inches on its longest side. My great aunt gave it to her as a young girl and it gives me so much pleasure to caress these worn edges, knowing that she too handled them so long ago. It comes with a matching prayer book and a battered sleeve which has saved the two books from worse wear I'm sure.

Resting under the towering image of the Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho sits a much smaller Buddha figure. This one has been adorned with gold leaf, a popular offering that worshippers bring with them when they go to pray.

24 karat gold in a bottle. This little bottle proports to contain 24 karat placer gold panned in a stream in California. If you look closely you can easily see it is actually gold leaf not placer gold. Oh well. For the Looking Close... On Friday challenge: (a touch of) gold.
Happy Friday.
This weekend John found and gave me this cottonwood leaf, perfectly dried out and heart shaped. I like gifts like this. Thanks John. It will be mounted, framed and hung on the wall.
For MM theme of Cracks, this is some cracked mica on top of a black polymer clay base that has cracked gold leaf. I was shooting the cracked gold leaf (I made over 20 years ago), but it didn't seem too interesting on its own. So I found my box of mica and right on top, there was some cracks. :-) Hope you like. HMM!
