Taken last year when COVID was in full swing - but, we still went outside so they could spend time with me safely!

"Look me in the eye"

First time I was using a telephoto lens last week end with the Sigma 150-600mm, and what a blast !! A real discovery for me, and lots of subjects to photograph. This guy was staring at me for a full minute, and I loved his attitude. I really like the result of this photo, that looks awesomely sharp and the details on its body are amazing.

Series: Shapes & Texture

This collection was gathered through many different photo opportunities throughout the years. I always felt these individual photographs did not quite match the original series or spoke to their location. Instead, as a collective, they each represent sort of a puzzle - whether it be from their shape, texture, or composition. After gathering numerous examples and keeping in their own separate folder, it became more apparent that they matched. The simplicity of form, similarity in structure, and two-dimensional visual led me to create this focused series.

- Day Two -

We left the highest point, Clingman's Dome, and continued downwards onto the winding, curving roads. Back onto 441, we followed Oconaluftee River southward. We pulled over along the way to admire (and photograph!) creeks, meadows full of wild flowers, and wildlife. We spotted numerous elks roaming.

We ended up getting "lost" down an odd little road full of small houses, domestic animals, and bizarre decorations; we easily turned back on track. Continuing south towards Cherokee NC, we made our next stop Oconaluftee Visitor Center.

There was a museum, a homestead wonderfully preserved, to show how families lived and survived in the mountains 100 years ago. My Mom was delighted and wonderstruck imaging life on the homestead; I tried my hardest to capture that moment for her!

- Day Four -

We started our day early and headed east towards Glacier National Park. Instead of taking the main road to the entrance, I suggested driving the longer way around to explore, why not? We are glad we took the path less traveled because we saw some awesome sights all around the Apgar Mountains!

The Hopewell Rocks are rock formations known as sea stacks caused by tidal erosion in the Bay of Fundy. They stand 40–70 feet tall and are located at the Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park in New Brunswick. They are also known as flowerpots and come in an amazing variety of sizes and shapes. They were given names like Elephant, Bear, Dinosaur, ET, and even Mother-in-Law.

- Day Four -

Since we were staying in Dolly Parton’s hometown, we explored the town of Sevierville. We saw her statue on main street, barefoot and with her guitar! From there, our next idea was to head west this time. Our first stop was Harrisburg Covered Bridge, built in 1875. The further west we headed, the less touristy it became. There were plenty of winding roads as we skirted the perimeter of the National Park, some roads we could barely turn around on, but it’s fun getting “lost” with my Mom! We definitely ended up in some backcountry places.

Before we got too lost, we headed back into the park and decided to check out another waterfall - Laurel Falls. We laced up our hiking boots and took about a 2.5 mile trek up there. The higher we climbed, the steeper the trail's cliffside became. We were a bit nervous but kept on going (and it was worth it!) The falls were beautiful.

As we were leaving the Great Smokies for the last time, we both joked how we never spotted a bear in Montana nor Tennessee on our trips. Not too long after, right before leaving Gatlinburg, I noticed an animal on the side of the road - sure enough - a few black bear cubs! We drove a bit further ahead, parked and switched seats. Mom turned us around and we saw a line of vehicles admiring the bears.

One was walking along the guardrail towards my renegade. We exclaimed and I grabbed my Nikon. I rolled down my window and didn’t even look into my camera, I was just watching the bear no more than 8 feet from me. It stopped, turned toward me, and we looked right at each other, then he continued moseying on. I was snapping photos the whole time, but never once peeked through my viewfinder. It was too special a moment to miss with my own eyes and one I will never forget!

It was the icing on the cake for our special trip! We had seen so many beautiful sights and the mountains were much bigger than we both anticipated. Even though covid was rampant, we were very safe and it did not hold us back from sightseeing and enjoying our cozy lodge. Once again, another trip of a lifetime with my best friend, my Mom! I took one last photograph of our view from our room then it was time to pack up. The Great Smoky Mountains - what a magnificent place!

While five days is too short to properly explore the Faroe Islands, we lucked out with spectacular weather that made taking in the country's dramatic landscapes an absolute pleasure. While people often talk about the Faroe Islands as being very similar to Iceland, Scotland or Norway the truth is it is its own distinct destination with raw shoreline and distinct geological formations that make it truly unique to experience and explore.

It was our six month anniversary of our marriage and we figured why not make it memorable. We drove out to the Salton Sea, camped on the beach and then drove over to some of our favorite abandoned locations and the mud pots. Noel brought her wedding dress and I brought my high school tux I still had for some reason. My friend Steve ran my camera and I processed what came out. It was an amazing time with one of the only girls I know who would go to these lengths to have so much fun by my side. I am truly blessed.

We rode a gondola lift to the top of Big Mountain & saw some of the most fascinating sights of my life. Mountains as far as you could possibly see. Words & photographs do no justice.
