21st May 2015 at Union Chapel, London N1 (Lau gig).

The Guitar was developed across Europe from the 12th century onwards. They usually have six strings. Their vibration is transmitted to the body of the Guitar via a sound board. Air inside the body vibrates and increases the sound.

Archtop guitars as the name suggests have an arched top, based on the design of a violin. They usually have two f holes. They were originally desined to enhance volume, being particularly popular wyih Jazz musicians.

The instrument in the photo is a 5th Avenue guitar made by the Canadian Godin company. This “’50s style” acoustic Archtop was introduced in 2008.

Guitars are assigned the number 321.322-5 in the Hornbostel Sachs classification of musical instruments indicating:

3 = Chordophone. Instruments where the sound is primarily produced by the vibration of a string or strings that are stretched between fixed points.

32 = Composite Chordophone. Acoustic and electro acoustic instruments which have a resonator as an integral part of the instrument, and solid body electric chordophones.

321 = Lutes. Instruments where the plane of the strings runs parallel with the resonators surface.

321.3 = Handle Lutes. Instruments in which the string bearer is a plain handle.

321.32 = Necked Lutes. Instrument in which the handle is attached to, or carved from, the resonator, like a neck

321.322 = Necked Box Lutes. Instruments in which the resonator is built up from wood.

321.322-5 = Instruments where the strings are vibrated by bare hands and fingers.

21st May 2015 at Union Chapel, London N1.

Country: Britain - Scotland. Style: Contemporary Folk / Electronica.

Lineup: Aidan O'Rourke (fiddle), Martin Green (piano accordion/keyboard/sporkatron), Kris Drever (v/g) with the : Emma Smith (violin), Jennymay Logan (violin), Nic Pendlebury (viola), Laura Moody (cello).

Lau consists of Kris Drever (from Orkney), Aidan O’Rourke (from Oban in Argyll) and Martin Green (from East Anglia). Leaving aside short Celtic Connections Festival Club sets, I have seen Lau five times before. These were all a while ago (between August 2006 and May 2009), and they have changed a lot since then. The band has always added other influences (Rock, Classical, Jazz) to Folk, but in recent years they have taken large steps in the direction of Electronica. The final part of the gig featured the Elysian Quartet who joined Lau for a PRS for Music Foundation New Music Biennial commission. For the Quartet Nic Pendlebury replaced the recently deceased Vincent Sipprell. I took photos of Lau at the Celtic Connections Festival Club in 2011 (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157625811547273/) and the Elysian Quartet with Maya Youssef at the Celebrating Sanctuary Festival in 2012 (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157630403360986/).

This guitar is one of many that has been seized by UK customs on the grounds that it uses unlicensed rosewood, in this case for the guitar's fingerboard. (I am not sure which species of rosewood this is; Brazilian rosewood is banned outright unless it's fallen trees or old stock, but most guitar makers use Indian or other species. Godin is not a high-end brand, so I wonder if this belonged to a private owner who simply did not have the necessary paperwork, or was part of a larger batch that used wood from illegally felled trees.)

21st October 2016 at SOAS (Brunei Gallery), London WC1 (Namlo gig).

The Acoustic Electric (or Electro Acoustic) Guitar is an acoustic guitar fitted with a magnetic pickup, a piezoelectric pickup or a microphone.

The instrument in the photo is a Godon Multiac. Robert Godin started making guitars in Quebec in 1972, originally under the name Norman. After a split with a partner he formed LaSiDo Inc in 1978. Godin is the best known of many names used by the company. In 1987 he launced the predessor to the Multiac - the Acousticaster (a thinline Telecaster-shaped electro-acoustic guitar) The Multiac arrived in 1994 with a revised shape and on-board electronics and synth access. There are currently a bewildering variety of different models of this guitar.

Acoustic Electric Guitars are assigned the number 321.322-5 in the Hornbostel-Sachs classification of musical instruments ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornbostel-Sachs ), indicating:

321.322-5 = Instruments where the strings are vibrated by bare hands and fingers.

www.latribune.ca/affaires/le-fondateur-des-guitares-godin...

4th August 2016 at Ham Marquee, Sidmouth.

Lineup: Riccardo Tesi (diatonic accordion/tamburello), Maurizio Geri (v/g/percussion), Claudio Carboni (soprano sax/alto sax), Gigi Biolcati (percussion/v).

Riccardo Tesi founded Banditalia in 1992, and apart from changes to the percussionist the lineup has remained stable. Their music is largely composed by Tesi but incorporates tradtional styles, but also Jazz and sounds from countries around the world. The main local influence is Tuscan (both Tesi and Geri are from Pistoia in Tuscany). Carboni is from Emilia-Romagna (Bologna) and Biolcati from Piedmont (Santhià). I saw Banditalia in 2007 in Brussels (see www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157626254826974/), and Biolcati in 2008 with the pan-European band Evening Star.
