I want this year to be an opportunity to be more present and aware of the privileged life I'm fortunate to live. 2019 was a year that often kept me in low places, and I continually found myself beneath a weight of burdens that I let tie themselves to me rather than let them pass over me.
To that goal, my partner suggested journaling to me. To write down the things that I struggle with. Write down the things I'm grateful for. Write down the things that are important to me.
My photography goals in 2020 mirror that of my mental health goals. I want to feel more open to being creative, and I want to be less selective about what I share. I want to spend less time under the weight of being perfect, or better than the last shot. I'm not built for that grind.
I scanned through the first journal entry I wrote in my new journal and came across the phrase "I want to be happy."
I wanted to share that piece of my journal without revealing all of my other sensitive things I'm writing about, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to embrace my photography goals as well.
I want to be happy. I want the people around to me to be happy and healthy as well.
Here's to a happy 2020.

In pursuit of my lifelong goals of getting closer to natural surroundings and improving my general human condition, I bought an overpriced house with property on the Olympic Peninsula. I moved, and I'm selling my house in the city. Not sure what I am actually improving in the short term, certainly not the overvalued real estate market. Hoping that's temporary. It's been an incredibly stressful few months, I haven't been able to do much else, and I can see no end in the foreseeable future.
One of the better situations in this scenario, though, is having all this new blank wall space with high ceilings to hang big prints!
In the process of moving I found a lot of material I have not chosen to do really anything with before, including a small test print of this detail of Mineral Creek in the Hoh Rainforest that I took back in 2010. Never thought much of it before, but it now strikes me as perfect to blow up real big with thin borders to showcase on a certain big wall in my new house. Fits perfect with the forested locale. Surprising sometimes how old stuff I ignored in the past can fit just right with an unforseen new application. For interior design, the stunning, grand sunset landscapes that look so great on websites and in publications don't always work like I think they will when I get them up on the wall. Simple, minimalist compositions, extracting and isolating patterns and details in nature, then emphasizing with the huge print treatment tends to work really well, especially when the subject matter is harmonious with the local area, helping bring a little of the outside indoors. I can almost smell and taste the misty, wet hanging from the lush moss edging this cascading creek.

The boys enjoy the goal England scored, the rest of the match was not that exciting especially the second half.
Lake Needwood is a 75-acre (300,000 m2) reservoir in Derwood, Maryland. Located east of Rockville, in the eastern part of Montgomery County, it is situated on Rock Creek. The lake was created by damming Rock Creek in 1965 with the goal of providing flood control and reducing soil erosion. The Rock Creek Trail begins at Lake Needwood and can be followed along the course of Rock Creek, ending at the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. (Source: Wikipedia)
This was my entry into Canon's Project Imagin8ion Contest that has made it into the finals in the "Goal" category of the contest.
Does it have what it takes to actually take the grand prize place in the Goal category? Chances are very slim, there are 9 other really great shots that it is competing with.
Just an honor just to have made it this far in the contest. Beyond any type of dream I could have imagined. Feels just as surreal as the image above appears ;^)
During my visit to heaven I saw that becoming better than we had ever been before was by far more important that obtaining things. As we each made choices on what our lives on earth would look like, never did we dwell on being rich, beautiful, or powerful. Instead, we concerned with improving...

Although there is a lot of planning involved in my trips there are also a lot of things that happen spontaneously. I have become very efficient and can now shoot at 3 locations in a one hour window. During my drive between locations I spotted these two Ocotillo's standing like a field goal with the Milky Way in between the posts. Though the shot was perfectly composed I had a trick lighting up both Ocotillo's evenly. Eventually I figured painting each of them for 6 seconds each then filling the foreground with a second of light would be even lighting all around. This is an example of how I teach myself lighting techniques. Trial and error.
The composition is stronger than most of my pieces in the portfolio because this features two elements with different framing. It also demonstrates that I am able to light a variety of scenes.
