All the glowiness looks better on black.
So a few weeks back I wrote about how I sleep like a hibernating bear, for better or worse. The same was the case on this solo backpacking trip I made for a couple days up on Oregon's TDH Mountain to get this view of Mt. Hood.
So there I was, on a whim finding myself trudging uphill with a 50lbs+ pack on. Starting from the distant valley far down below, snowshoeing up past Mirror Lake in the midground, and finally making the push through thigh-deep snow up to this ridge, overlooking it all. I arrived an hour before sunset. Cloudy skies and lightly falling snow allowed me to not worry about shooting sunset that night, so I shifted focus to setting camp before the dark fell.
As always when camping at this spot, I opted to not camp directly upon the ridge, as the wind is everlasting up there. I set camp just below the ridge in a stand of trees... digging into the snow and packing a nice base for the tent. I set the tent, boiled some snow to refill my water supply, and cooked up some Chili Mac for dinner. By this point the hike, camp building, and full belly had me pretty tuckered out. I crawled in to my little solo tent and read by candle light until I fell asleep.
DONT FALL ASLEEP WITHOUT BLOWING OUT A CANDLE. I normally have no issue with blowing out my little REI candle lantern, but had a lapse in judgement and allowed myself to fall asleep with it still burning. I must have knocked it over in my slumber, as I was awoken to the smell of burning tent. I put out the small smoulder fairly quickly, but ended up with a baseball sized hole in my tent... on one of the walls near the floor. I was able to just cover it with snow to seal the hole. By this time, it was only 9pm... a lot of sleeping still to do.
Back to sleep I went, waking to my alarm the next morning. MAN, I felt well rested. I crawled out of my tent in the faint light of pre-dawn light to discover one of the most odd things I had ever woken up to (and I've woken up in some pretty crazy situations before.) There were Coyote tracks all over my camp, a few different sets. They had come in the middle of the night, probably smelling me and my food, and had... uh... marked their territory. Yeah, ok fine, I'll say it... THEY PISSED ALL OVER MY TENT! More than once. I would have been upset about it if I didn't find the idea of Coyotes peeing on me in my sleep oddly hilarious. There were little yellows craters at the foot of my tent where they had peed on the tent, then the warm animal-water had dripped down and melted the snow. Brilliant.
It was easily one of the funniest moments I had ever spent in the backcountry. Then I went and shot this.
Anyways, like everyone else in this crowded nature photography scene, I lead workshops, I teach processing instruction in person or worldwide via Skype or Google Hangout screen sharing, and have a website with images, workshop info, prints, and yadda, yadda, yadda.
The Ricoh XR Rikenon 55mm f2.2 is a very strange lens. It was the kit lens with the Ricoh CR5 SLR. I suspect it was originally designed to work at f2.8 or even f3.5. Wide open at f2.2 it's soft and glowy and generally weird. It is fun to play with, though.

Oh how I despise that Fergie song, she's singing about the wrong bridge you know.. London Bridge doesn't move.. definitely doesn't look like this and.. most importantly it's an awful piece of trash-pop ;) Anyway it was a beautiful morning this morning, a great time to be stood by the Thames with a cup of tea and a tripod.
Dramatic light, flare, colour shifts and funny little glowy balls - the final roll of film I exposed on the day had a bit of everything. But I suppose that's part of the fun of expired film.
I can only think that Kandersteg enjoyed our visit as much as we did, if the heart in the final image is anything to go by. 😉
Either way, we had a very enjoyable day out amongst the mountains and can definitely recommend a day trip to Kandersteg and Oeschinensee.
Committed to expired Kodak Portra 160 using a Mamiya 6 and 50 mm lens. Developed using a C-41 kit from Ars-Imago and digitised with a digital camera. Positive conversion, colours and contrast done with Negative Lab Pro. Dust cleaning and final tweaks in Photoshop.

Hello Flickr… I missed you. The busy week doesn't really seem to be stopping, but I guess I am adjusting.
Here I am in my bathroom mirror with a crazy glowy light in the window behind me, and making the horribly dirty mirror's ickiness look lovely. Yes, I have a giant freckle on my lower lip. I have been snapping duds lately, but I went to a very cool abandoned location yesterday and will hopefully have much good stuff to post from the shoot.

Another from this senior session. Found this field of flowers (weeds) that looked like a scene from the Lorax. Lit with the Elinchrom Quadra and modified with the Softlighter II umbrella.

Um. Yes, quite. It's a silvery thing with wavy glowy silvery tentacle things on a bed of silvery silver stuff. And it's here. And that's about it.
