A close-up of the ice on the outside of Letchworth's infamous "ice volcano", which made the international news circuit during New York's cold weather last week. (And yes, the entire structure is 100% ice.)
The Letchworth "Geyser" is a natural spring on the grounds of the Glen Iris Inn at Letchworth State Park. During the winter it forms a tall ice column, already well melted by the time I took this photo. It is a beautiful spot year round.

Indians had named this area "An-de-ka-ga-kwa", meaning "the place where the sun lingers", and it has been said through Indian lore that when the sun passes over the glen it pauses a moment longer there than at any other part of the valley. This is the Middle Falls on the Genesee River in Letchworth State Park near Castile, NY.

A small waterbird. Enjoys deep dives in search of small fish. Also takes insects on the surface. Difficult to photograph because you never know where they'll pop up after a dive. Also I find very few of the photographs i've taken of these birds to be properly focussed. And I don't know why.

I'm listening to "The Voice" as I post this. And thinking, of all the birds I've seen and heard, this one would not make it onto a show like that, for birds, that is. Photographed at Glen Iris.
As seen on worldwide TV! Reported in the international press as a "frozen geyser", this is actually a gravity-fed fountain at upstate New York's Letchworth State Park. Contrary to reports, it basically does this every year. But once it made the Today Show, the crowd came out! This is probably the most people I've ever seen in one place at Letchworth.
