Leslie has returned from England!
Unfortunately, she's pretty jetlagged, so this was the closest I got to a decent picture of her today.
I've posted Wolfgang's "girlfriend" before. It's a long, stuffed toy with a squeaker. I've noted how our miniature dachshund seems to recognize her face. He puts the face in his food bowl while he's eating. He props her up on the arm of his favorite chair in the right position so his girlfriend can "see" out the window. He does these things consistently.
Now, we think we've figured out something else. Wolfgang's not just barking randomly at the mop and broom over in the corner. Our tiny dog will place his girlfriend on the floor, near those giants. Then, he'll nudge the mop or the broom with his nose and act startled when it moves. And, in a moment or two, he will snatch his girlfriend from the area, barking at the looming monsters.
If Wolfgang feeds his friend consistently, and helps her to see out the window, then could he also pretend to rescue her?
An epic Urban Adventure and Museumy fieldtrip by bike to Oregon City, West Linn, and Lake Oswego.
Shawn Granton original thought of the ride, we decided to co-lead, but unfortunately he couldn't attend because his girlfriend April had a terrible bike collision with a hiding speed bump the night before. Shawn was the original router, so I had to make due as I only had ridden the beginning and end of the ride planned.
Fourteen people joined up for the journey (10 did the whole ride)-- many newbies which was exciting. The ride left from Sellwood New Seasons at 10:30 am and we biked across the narrow bridge up and through the Riverview Cemetery, and stopped in at Lewis & Clark college to visit the Tiered lawn gardens & pools (we joked we were at Aunt Betty's mansion) and also saw a wonderful show by Alison Saar's at the art gallery (up through Dec) and also stopped to visit the new York (Clark's slave) statue dedicated this year. Past the lawschool we hit the Tryon Creek State Park bike path (thanks Bill for getting us to the start) and stopped in at the Nature Center -- the state park was preserved because the need for trees to fuel the Iron Works that used to be in Lake Oswego, our next stop.
The took the bike path through the woods, on such lovely sunny fall day, and popped out right at the Lake Oswego sign.
Following the Clackmas Bike map suggested rides, we rode (er pushed our bikes up a steep hill) through the neighborhoods and crossed a little bridge over Lake Oswego -- except there was no lake -- it's manmade and was currently drained. Strange mud flats and fancy houses.
Our next stop was the Iron works park off the Clackamas River. Neat old displays and info and one remaining furnace from the former Iron works days. We had a yummy potluck lunch.
Another bike path took us out of the park, and on to Mary S Young State Park -- Roger took over as leader and took us through the park and then a wonderful rid through the neighborhood so we could avoice hwy 43.
We then rode a short section of 43 to the the turn off to the Willamette Locks in West Linn. We looked around the locks, but unfortunately the little museum is only open in the summer.
I checked my watch, and realized we had just enough time to bike over the the historic bridge (which will close soon for a couple years) into Oregon City, ride up the municipal elevator up the cliff, and make the last tour of John McGloughlin's house -- the father of oregon AND a national park site. The tour was fun, but no ghosts this time. Then we walked along the Oregon City Blugg trail, lovely sun, and looked at the Falls, industry, and a nice statue bust of John!
Before heading home we stopped in at the famous fish market for goodies and the bathroom. Roger told us about a little side path trip along the clackamas river -- which was lovely, and then we took the River road on the east side of the Willamette towards home. Unfortunately no river views until Milwaukie where we turned off near Elk Rock and rode a bike path there. Then back through sellwood, with a stop at Share-it-square which has new bike street murals, and the springwater corridor towards home.
I was delighted with how many off street paths the route had, was thankful for the help from folks on the ride, and for Jon wood who took over as ride historian since Shawn couldn't make it.
