GIANT WATER LILIES - REAL JARDIN BOTANICO MADRID

How many of you just sang that title to the same tune as the Green Giant Sweetcorn adverts?? haha

This gorgeous fella was in Bird Kingdom (yes I know he's not a bird) Niagara Falls, Ontario, and although behind glass, I thought his pic turned out rather well :) :)

The mighty green iguana, I think of Costa Rican descent? LOL anyway... I love lizards and reptiles... always fancied a gecko (I know, big difference!!)

Half way through the week, the wind is easing a little, and so is the rain, to be honest we had a balmy 16 degrees yesterday, so pretty much like the average summer's day in Northern Ireland LOL

Hope your week is going well and you all have a great Wednesday :)

Thank you so much for the views, comments and faves.. appreciate you taking the time to check out my stuff :)

Giant Squirrel (Ratufa macroura) is distributed throughout the island in suitable habitats as three different subspecies. They are diurnal and arboreal, always live in forests or near by villages with some trees. Its diet consists of leaves, barks and young twigs and shoots of trees and also wild fruits, berries and nuts in their seasons. It is said that insects, grubs and occasionally bird eggs are also included in its food. They build their nests among branches of tall tree within its territory demarcated by a solitary squirrel or a pair, using small branches and twigs. (biodiversityofsrilanka.blogspot.com)

This Giant Kingfisher (Megaceryle maxima) was sitting quietly, and then suddenly responded like this when another one made a fly-by! I am not sure what this reaction meant.

Photographed in the wild in the Kruger National Park.

While at a roadside pullout along the Avenue of the Giants (California 254) with a view looking up and to the northeast at nearby coastal redwoods in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. What I wanted to capture with this image was the opening to the skies through some nearby trees converging above. Rather than having a look straight on with the trees, I decided to use a diagonal angle with the opening in the trees. I thought it created a more layered look to the trees in skies. The rest was metering the image so as to not blow any of the highlights in the upper portions and tree crowns of the nearby redwoods while still being able to pull out the more shadowed areas later in post production.

Well, I was excited about seeing hummingbirds come to my pagoda flower and then in flutters this beautiful Giant Swallowtail Butterfly. Quite a magical moment.

(Wikipedia)

The Giant's Causeway has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. It consists of about 40,000 regularly shaped basalt columns, which are about 60 million years old. About half of the columns have a hexagonal cross-section, but there are also those with four, five, seven, or eight corners. The tallest of the stone pillars are twelve meters high. The rock layer is up to 25 m thick. The Giant's Causeway runs about five kilometers along the cliffs and ends in the sea,

The Giant Kingfisher is a large and impressive bird that can be found in various parts of Africa. They are the largest of the kingfisher species found in Africa, with a distinctive dark blue-grey back, white belly, and a crest of black feathers on the top of their head.

These birds are known for their fishing abilities, and can often be seen perched on a branch overhanging a river or stream, patiently waiting for their prey. Once they spot a fish, they will dive into the water headfirst and use their strong beak to grab their prey. Giant Kingfishers also feed on other small aquatic creatures such as crayfish, crabs, and frogs.

Giant Kingfishers are solitary birds and are typically found in pairs during breeding season. They nest in tunnels dug into the banks of rivers or streams, and both the male and female participate in the construction of the nest.

Despite their size, Giant Kingfishers are vulnerable to habitat loss and degradation, and their populations are declining in some areas. They are important indicators of the health of aquatic ecosystems, and efforts are being made to protect their habitats and conserve their populations.

The Giant Kingbird (Tyrannus cubensis) is a species of bird in the tyrant flycatcher family Tyrannidae. It is endemic to Cuba, although there are historical records of it on other islands. The species is probably mostly closely related to the loggerhead kingbird, which also occurs in Cuba as well as several other nearby Caribbean islands. It is classified as Endangered by Birdlife International and there are less than 1,000 individuals left.

Coastal giant salamanders are one of the largest terrestrial salamander species in the world and can exceed one foot in length (the one pictured here was about 8"). These salamanders inhabit damp coastal forests in the Pacific Northwest, and are usually found near streams or other aquatic features. Larvae are aquatic, and can take two years or longer to metamorphose (in some cases larvae never transform and remain as aquatic gilled adults). Adults are voracious predators and are known to eat rodents, banana slugs, and snakes, as well as other amphibians and invertebrates. This species is most abundant in old-growth forests, and is threatened by logging and associated increases in stream siltation.
