Arctic Terns can be found on many off shore Islands including the Farne Islands where I captured this photograph.

With its long tail streamers and general shape the Arctic Tern deserves the local name of 'sea swallow'. Appearing white with a black cap, it is largely coastal although it can be seen inland on migration. It depends on a healthy marine environment and some colonies have been affected by fish shortages. Arctic terns are the ultimate long distance migrants - summer visitors to the UK and winter visitors (well summer then there) to the Antarctic.

The Queen mounted on Burmese, ... a horse gifted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1969.

"Burmese was presented to Her Majesty in 1969 by The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and The Queen rode her in Trooping the Colour for 18 years before the mare retired in 1986 to Windsor. There she enjoyed four years before passing away at the age of 28. Burmese is buried in the grounds of the Home Park private."

HIGHEST FLICKR EXPLORE RANKING: 74

The Chromolocomotion artwork, by David Batchelor, installed above the Meeting Place sculpture at St Pancras International Station on the main concourse of the Victorian station.

“Under the clock at St Pancras” has been a traditional meeting place for Londoners since the station opened in 1868, and this bronze sculpture, by British artist Paul Day, stands directly beneath St Pancras' main timepiece. It is intended to “reflect the romance of train travel as it used to be," while around the pedestal is a frieze of figures both meeting and departing. “I think that is an interesting slice of life and in a way the relief around the base has to be a rich tapestry about people getting together again after being apart,” said Paul after the statue was unveiled in 2007. “All separation involves a suspended moment when one wonders, is this forever?"

HIGHEST FLICKR EXPLORE RANKING: 395

Burghley House, just outside Stamford, Lincolnshire, England after Boxing Day snow. This stately mansion was built between 1558 and 1587 for Sir William Cecil, the 1st Baron Burghley, who served as Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I, and is still lived in by his descendants. It is regarded as one of the principle surviving examples of Elizabethan architecture in England, albeit with later alterations including parkland landscaping and structural changes by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown from 1775 to 1780.

The building was originally laid out in an ‘E’ as a tribute to Queen Elizabeth but she never actually got to visit it; her one trip there was cancelled at the last minute due to an outbreak of smallpox and she stayed in nearby Stamford instead. However, the present Queen Elizabeth has visited, as did Queen Victoria and her husband, Albert, in 1844. The couple hadn’t been married for too long and, apparently, proved rather slow to come down for breakfast most days…
