Not every building downtown is meant to be admired — some are just meant to work, and this one works hard. The Thermal Chicago P-2 Plant makes ice on an industrial scale, chilling water overnight to cool office towers across the Loop during the day, a district cooling system most people never think about even as it keeps their building comfortable all summer. The circular form isn't decorative; it's functional, built around the equipment it houses rather than styled to please a passerby.
That exposed condenser unit crowning the roof is the real subject here: heavy steel bracing in a tight X-pattern, riveted panels, mechanical vents lining the drum's upper edge like a row of rivets holding the whole industrial hat in place. Below it, the building's curved glass base reflects the surrounding towers in cool green tones, a strange bit of polish on a structure that's fundamentally about refrigeration, not appearance.
It's a rare chance to see infrastructure most cities hide behind blank walls, sitting right out in the open, doing unglamorous work in full view of some very glamorous neighbors.

A symmetrical grid of gilded coffered ceiling panels rises overhead, each square framed by beaded molding and centered on a carved crest or fleur-de-lis medallion. Warm gold and burnt-umber tones catch the light across the raised plasterwork, with acanthus leaves and scrollwork spilling into the corners of every panel. A single ornate column capital intrudes at the lower edge, hinting at the grandeur of the room below this Gilded Age ceiling. The repetition of pattern across the full width of the frame turns the architectural detail into something almost textile-like, more tapestry than plaster.
