This image was made on this day a year ago . I was away from the city, as I am today, spending a week off in the Catskill Mountain region of New York State. It is a lovely part of the world and a very nice change of pace and scenery from the city. But after a few days I began again to long to be in a town with paved streets and a decent coffee shop or bar. When I arrived at the local village , I saw a fellow--I’ll call him Walt- sipping his first coffee of the morning outside a pleasant cafe on Main St. He asked a question about the camera I was carrying and pretty soon we were having a conversation that ranged over many topics. It was a wonderful way to pass the morning and I learned as much from him about the area than I could from any guidebook. This morning I again ran into Walt sitting at the same table, sipping a cup of coffee. I .had no camera this time-- I am deliberately going to put it aside for a few days--but I remembered this picture that I took last year. Happily “Walt” hasn’t changed very much.

HAPPY SLIDERS SUNDAY !!

I am currently fascinated by how sunlight finds its way

to unexpected places in unexpected ways.

My two just-previous uploads to Flickr are in the same genre.

It is a kind of ethereal analog to the way water seeks and finds

a lower level under the pull of gravity.

Here, I did some sliding to maximize the drama that the winter

noontime sunlight created on a street in downtown Basel CH,

Photography and travel are inseparable for me. If you’ve followed my work, you will know that most of my photographs stem from my travels. My camera is my constant companion, allowing me to document a wide array of subjects. Landscapes, architecture, street scenes, wildlife, birds, and whatever else catches my eye. I’ve never felt the need to confine myself to a single genre. For me, traveling and photography are symbiotic; one fuels the other. And while snapshots have their charm, my goal is always to capture the essence of a moment and do justice to the beauty in front of me.

One such moment unfolded during our visit to Morocco. Among its many marvels, the royal gate of the palace of Fes stands out as one of the most exquisite pieces of architecture I have encountered. The site often teems with tour buses and crowds, but the trick, one that rarely fails, is to go early. Early mornings have a magic of their own, offering peace, solitude, and a chance to experience even the busiest locations as if they are waiting just for you.

This was also an opportunity to put my vintage TSE lenses to work. I own three of these remarkable gems, and they’re indispensable for architectural photography. The lens I used for this shot is a recent upgrade, replacing my older 45 TSE, which lacked the same details and sharpness. This new lens, however, delivers unparalleled sharpness and ensures that I can capture architectural details without distortion.

Initially, I photographed the gate without any people in the frame, but the image felt incomplete. As you may know, I love incorporating human elements into my compositions. They add scale, life, and a sense of narrative. My wife, wearing one of her stunning kaftans, became the perfect addition. The colors and patterns of her outfit harmonized beautifully with the intricate designs of the gate. Her presence brought the scene to life, providing both context and scale.

This royal gate is the only part of the palace accessible to visitors, as the king still resides there. While you can’t explore beyond the gate, its breathtaking beauty makes it worth the early start. In many ways, Fes itself feels like an open-air museum, untouched by the passage of time. Wandering its streets in the quiet hours of the morning is an experience unlike any other. Felt like an invitation to step into history and capture moments that transcend time.

I have made a short film to record our journey to this incredible place; you may be interested in watching. Click here to get amazed with the beauty of this special place.

a shot from a trip into Plymouth City Centre last week.

I went into town with a mind to take pictures of the Barcode, more on that tomorrow, but ended up having a wonder around to a few other spots.

Landscape photography can be very frustrating - constantly dependent on the weather. Some may wonder why we don't give it up and change to a different genre of picture taking rather than always dealing with such a fickle collaborator. This is why!!!

Bologna, Italy

Why is this man sitting on the frame of a car window? To whom is he signalling? What is he trying to say? I have no idea; his car sped down the block and around the corner immediately after this photo was taken. Another street drama over before any questions could be asked or answered
