The diesel generator for the Cork internet Exchange (CIX) data centre. Note the top of the exhaust is slightly askew - this was the moment when the power was cut to the building and the generator automatically kicked in.
...saved us from complete insanity during my mom & dad's visit.
terrible way to spend their visit.
thankfully, my parents are awesome.
my heart goes out to any and all people affected by this nasty heat wave rolling around.
we lost power for just over 72 hours. (which seemed like forever)
i can honestly say that had it not been over 100 degrees,
it may not have been so bad...but omahdeargawd...
me + horrid heat + no way to cool off = misery...
and we were lucky...as of last night, there were still people in lima without power.
and today is s'posed to be 105 degrees (with nasty nasty humidity to boot)

Gaza Barracks near Tonbridge was one of many barracks constructed in 1938 as the threat of war was imminent. As was often the case, Royal Engineers constructed the infrastructure, with a local contractor completing the erection of buildings; a cheap and quick timber clad frame with corrugated asbestos sheet roof, typical of the era. With large workshops and accommodation for up to 10 Officers and nearly 200 other ranks, the barracks was home to transport units, latterly accommodating personnel from search light batteries stations locally. After the war, the War Department retained the barracks as a depot for equipment due to be disposed of following the war. It was sold in 1960 and has remained in private hands since.
The original buildings remain in apparently great condition. Some have been demolished through mixture of poor condition and Council insistence (the owners can only build a new building if they demolish an old one).
The site does remain in private hands and there are tenant business occupying most of the units. This was a permission visit and tour with the owner, who appears happy to show people with a legitimate interest around this unique site.
The area was not connected to the grid for a couple of weeks. This generator was used to keep the electricity going while repairs were done.

When deciding what we were going to do on our trip, Benson expressed an interest in going to the Hoover Dam. I'd already been a few years earlier with Barney and Nick, but we hadn't done the tour, so it was worth going again.
(We actually seriously considered driving to the Grand Canyon since it wasn't too much farther, but figured that after all of the driving we'd be doing and the short time we had it wasn't worth going just to go. Boy, was I glad later that we made that decision.)
The tour was interesting, but awfully short. You basically see two different locations (these generators and one of the water tunnels) and get to look through an exhibit and an introductory video.
This was the first stop after the video--the generator room. I remember being fascinated in high school when I learned that the large majority of power generation involves using water to turn magnets--whether heating using nuclear, coal, gas, etc, or using gravity as in the case of the Hoover Dam.
Another interesting fact--the Hoover Dam's primary focus is on controlling water downstream, not on producing electricity. They view the generation of electricity as a byproduct.
