La coque de noix est devenue synonyme de petitesse dès le XVIIe siècle. L'expression fut ensuite donnée en surnom au coquet, un petit bateau circulant sur la Seine au début du XVIIIe siècle.

I was rather dazzled when this came out of the Deep Dream Generator!

This DC generator (5.2 kW) features rotor that is positioned between the two poles of a horseshoe magnet.

The air-insulated commutator consists of iron sheets.

The end is near as the demo crew strips the power house. Plans to redevelop the 750 acre site are moving ahead. For now it's a sad area to view especially during an overcast morning.

I saw these in southern Illinois while we were driving back from the car show in Rockford. We probably have these in Texas but not around Austin. So, they still look interesting to me. Plus, I liked the way the light was hitting them. We didn't stop, I was just shooting from the window.

The Deep Dream Generator just added a Text 2 Dream tool. In this series of four images, I tried a few failed prompts from NightCafe. One turned out a lot better, one worse, and one about the same.

A few weeks ago, I got to spend some time up on the St. Joe Sub after a concert in Atchison, and when I saw the signals indicating a northbound on its way, I set up for a shot at the Platte River bridge near Farley, MO (flic.kr/p/2nTCLCn).

Much to my surprise, the northbound turned out to be a Warbonnet solo shot, the BNSF 717 leading a Siemens generator on a depressed-center flat car. This was the J-MEMOMA, and it was heading to a new CNG power plant in Omaha. From there, I chased it north to the East Leavenworth siding, hoping to get some SCREAMING afternoon sun on it. Alas, it had to wait on a (flic.kr/p/2nTDnZn) that took just long enough to let the sun set below the western horizon. Hhh... oh, well. I'm still happy to have shot this rare move.

Macro Mondays - Contraption

I started the week by searching the house for some mechanical device to photograph, but found nothing that excited me. I then decided I would have to build my own contraption and that it should be an idea generator for MM. I know my contraption looks like a pile of junk, but use your imagination and allow me to explain a bit. I wanted to use some commonly photographed items for MM to build the device. You will see a light bulb, feather, match, die, key, paperclips, binder clips, and Scrabble tiles. I also used a key ring, wire nut, clothes pin, spring, L bracket, radiator clamp, rain jacket, Bible, and twist ties. The Bible is used as the base to provide a solid foundation and the red jacket made a nice backdrop. The light bulb represents the idea that is generated. The Key to sparking (match) a great MM idea involves some prayer (Bible) and taking a chance by rolling the dice. I usually like to inject some humor, which is represented by the feather (tickling device). The bracket, clips, clamps, ties, tiles, etc. hold everything together. Let me know if you want the complete plans for the MM Idea Generator. HMM

The Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in series hybrid vehicle to be produced by General Motors, expected to be launched as a 2011 model with production currently slated to begin in 2010. The Volt's propulsion system will be based on GM's new E-Flex platform.

Unlike current commercially available hybrids, the actual propulsion of the Volt is accomplished by the electric motor, as the internal combustion engine (ICE) is not mechanically connected to the wheels. With fully charged batteries, this electric power may be sourced exclusively from its onboard lithium-ion batteries, for up to 40 miles (64 km), a distance capable of satisfying the daily commute of 75% of Americans, which averages around 33 miles (53 km).

After 40 miles (64 km), the range of the Volt will need to be extended through the use of a small 4-cylinder ICE which drives a 53 kW generator. The electrical power from the generator is then sent to either the electric motor or the batteries, depending on the state of charge (SOC) of the battery pack and the power demanded at the wheels. The distribution is controlled by the electronic control unit (ECU) of the vehicle. This effectively extends the Volt's potential range to as much as 640 miles (1,030 km) on a single tank of fuel (which could be potentially extended for longer trips through conventional refueling).

The Volt's 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack can also be fully charged (technically ~85% SOC) by plugging the car into a 120-240VAC residential electrical outlet using the provided SAE J1772 compliant charging cord. No external charging station will be required.
