Richard L Hearn Generating Station, Toronto, Ontario, Canada - Toronto Urban Exploration

The Richard L. Hearn Generating Station (named after Richard Lankaster Hearn) is a decommissioned electrical generating station in Toronto. The plant was originally fired by coal, but later converted to burn natural gas. It is still owned by Ontario Power Generation, a publicly owned electrical generation company.[1] The plant has been described as "Pharaonic in scale” and encompasses 650 thousand cubic metres of space—large enough to fit 12 Parthenons inside.

The plant is located at 440 Unwin Avenue in Toronto's Port Lands area, directly south of the foot of Carlaw Avenue, across the shipping channel and next to the recently opened Portlands Energy Centre. The Richard L. Hearn Generating Station, together with the nearby Ashbridges Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant sewage sludge incinerator stack and the Commissioners Street waste incinerator stack, stand as towering landmarks of a bygone industrial era in the Portlands area of Toronto (all three smokestacks are no longer in operation, and only one still stands).

An electricity generating station built between 1945 and 1948, with northern extension of 1953, opened in 1948 to replace previous station on same site. Architects Mouchel and Partners, consulting engineers, Victoria Street, London. It had a capacity of 60MW. It was nationalised in 1948 under Central Electricity Generating Board. Generating plant decommissioned in 1984. Part demolished in 1998 and the overgrown site closed off. Main building demolished June-August 2003, leaving some ancillary buildings to the east surviving and in use.

In the 1960s a new red-brick power station was built in the lands of Pigeonhouse precinct. Officially called Poolbeg Generating Station, it is today widely known as the Pigeon House. Fuelled by either oil or natural gas, the first two 120MW units of the Poolbeg plant officially opened 1971. These units both have turbo-alternators manufactured by Brown Boveri and 'drum type' boilers by Fives Penhoet, France. A third 271MW unit was added in 1978, with a turbo-alternator manufactured by Alsthom, France and a 'once through' type Boiler by M.A.N Germany.

Reign of Fire London aka Poolbeg Power Station

At nearly €70 million, this dragon flick directed by Rob Bowman (X Files) became the most expensive film ever shot in Ireland and starred Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale. A boy finds a dragon egg in present-day London. Twenty years later, deadly dragons have overrun the world and survivors seek shelter in an old castle in rural Northumberland (aka the Wicklow Gap). The Poolbeg power station and facade of the abandoned Pigeon House Hotel were used as a set and the distinctive chimneys are visible. Part of the original set is included in the studio tram tour in Disneyland Paris.
