I'm either "Geeking out in the Googleplex" or "Googling out in the Geekyplex". Either way, I can't go all the way to California and not have the obligatory tourist picture taken next to the Google sign Inside the Googleplex.
I'm all foo-ked up, geeked-out and mashed-up here, add that to sleep deprivation, jet-lag, "conference belly" and a bit of a hangover...what a winning combination...
Despite all this, it was fantastic mind-expanding fun! Thanks Tim and Timo for organising a top conference and inviting me to the party...
I've been playing with the popup flash on the XTi since learning a bit about how to tweak it in photo class. This one was a happy accident -- my left hand blocked part of the flash, but it left a nice directional cast across the not-so-important areas, opening up the more important areas (i.e. my toe)
Your honest comments and critiques appreciated, as always.

G-Fair Korea is a fun event that is held at the Kintex center in Goyang-si, South Korea. This event highlights many different companies, from Home goods, to beauty products, health needs, and technology.
I once again was a guest of Aving News and MIK, along with Leo (Café Du Geek), Cyndi (MyFatPocket), Eva (Aving Russia), Vietnam+,and more.
We meet with 15 startup companies each, trying to find the breakout stars of the event. Some companies I’ve seen before, including a window washing robot I saw at CES 2017.
Walking around the hall, I got to see companies with some unique ideas. Lots of beauty items, massage chairs, and home personal saunas. I got to play with the inflatables, and several electronics.
Moon boat is a two-person pontoon shaped like a cresent moon. It’s $25,000, so I’ll have to find someone that wants to get me that perfect gift…

Madison W's depiction of several characters from Erin Hunter's Warriors series. Here's how she described the painting: The cat in the sky is Swiftpaw, a brave young apprentice who fought with Brightheart (then Brightpaw, bottom right with spots) against a pack of vicious dogs that plagued ThunderClan. Brightheart escaped with only one half of her face, but Swiftpaw lost his life. Cloudtail (bottom left, white with blue eyes) supported Brightheart as she was recovering from her injuries and eventually became her faithful mate. They had a daughter and granddaughters. In the Warriors fandom, people often speculate that Brightheart and Swiftpaw would have ended up being mates had Swiftpaw not been killed by the dogs.
In this picture, I imagine Brightheart and Cloudtail being the perfect mates to each other while Swiftpaw, above in StarClan, laments his own arrogance and what he lost as a result of it.

Meet the next generation of handheld 4K digital film cameras. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K is making waves at NAB 2018. That’s not an exaggeration. It has all of the features you want and it’s portable, affordable and professional. In fact, it’s packed with features.
Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema 4k
This 4k camera has a 4/3 size sensor, 13 stops of dynamic range and dual native ISO up to 25,600. You can expect stunning HDR images and amazing low light performance. The external controls give you quick access to essential functions, while the large 5 inch touchscreen makes it easy to frame shots, focus accurately and change the camera settings. It records images onto standard SD/UHS-II or CFast 2.0 cards in RAW and ProRes at up to 120 frames per second! The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K also has an MFT lens mount, built-in microphones, mini XLR input, full-sized HDMI, 3D LUT support, Bluetooth, USB-C Expansion Port and more.
On the top of the camera, there’s a handy HFR (high frame rate) button for 60fps capture in 4K. It will capture up to 120fps in HD. There’s also a stills button on top for still images at 4K UHD resolution.
That MFT lens mount means that it’s compatible with the lenses you already own. The MFT mount is extremely flexible and allows for different lens adapters. You can get adapters for PL, C, EF and more, so you can use lenses from makers like Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Leica, Panavision and more.
This camera uses the same Blackmagic OS as URSA Min, so you get the world’s most advanced camera operating system along with many of the same professional features you would normally only have on larger cameras.
It is available for pre-orders right now and ships in September. Prices start at $1295 (no lens).

ATEM Television Studio 4k
Another great item from the show is the Television Studio 4k – with 8 channel 12G-SDI inputs, 2-channel audio mixer, and signals up to 2160p60. The Rocketeer!!
For Christmas, my wonderful, incredible, amazing, stunning, fantastic wife got me the Rocketeer jacket ! This is something I have been dreaming and drooling over for years, decades! Ever since I saw the movie way back in my younger days.
The Rocketeer is easily one of my favourite movies of all time. I loved it from the first time I laid eyes on the posters, and the jacket always held a special place in my heart. So when I discovered a UK leather company was producing replicas of it, I bookmarked them for the day I could afford them.
And in my bookmarks they remained for three years or so. I was beginning to give up hope of every getting it, and then Claire arrived home with a large package one day in early January and handed me this.
It is, in every way, better than I had ever dreamed.
Jacket, shirt and pants all from UK company Wested Leather.
22 startups competed at the Value Up 2019 in November at the Summit Prugio in Seoul South Korea. I was asked to meet with some of the companies, and judge their products to see what new breakout stars are coming from South Korea.
I was joined by Aving News, Xiao Da (China), Café Du Geek (France) , VietnamPlus (Vietnam), MyFatPocket (Singapore), Teman Seoul (Indonesia), A Sing Di Dai Han ( Vietnamese YouTuber ), IT DongA, Byline Network, Beta News, and more, as we looked over the products.
Some of the companies I talked with included a stop smoking program that schedules your cigarettes, a mint that helps with curbing your smoking, a company that is making power transformers smarter, and a phone case that rips apart to reveal a smoke mask – to get you out of a house, subway, or other hazardous situation.
Leverpresso
My winner for the event was Leverpresso – a portable Espresso device. You can make your favorite flavors while on the road, or at home.
The device looks like a giant pill, but separates to the cup, a place to put the coffee, a tamper, and the lever, which water goes in to filter through.
You can make a single, or double shot while camping, in the office, or wherever you need the caffeine rush.
During the Break
We also got to hear from the rapping reporter, and watch a VR artist paint on the virtual canvas.
This was a great, small event that allowed me to see some of the awesome companies coming from South Korea.

"Le Freak" is a song by American R&B band Chic. The song commemorates Studio 54 in New York City for its notoriously long customer waiting lines, exclusive clientele, and discourteous doormen. According to guitarist Nile Rodgers, the song was devised during New Year's Eve 1977, as a result of him and bassist Bernard Edwards' being refused entrance to Studio 54, where they had been invited by Grace Jones, due to her failure to notify the nightclub's staff. He said the lyrics of the refrain were originally "F*ck off!" rather than "Freak out!"; for the documentary How to Make It in the Music Business, he said that 'f*ck off' was what the doorman had said to him when he slammed the door on them; first it was changed to "freak off" after Rodgers mused that they wouldn't be able to say 'f*ck off' on the radio, but that sounded "terrible", so he changed it to 'freak out'. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Freak

If you search Amazon, eBay, or another site for a 4k video camera, you might see many off-brand versions for a low price and a lot of keywords in the title like “Ultra HD”, “Wifi”, and more. You have never heard of these brands before, but they are rated on Amazon as a choice buy. So are they worth the effort? That is what I’m going to find out.
Amazon Choice – KicTeck
In this review, I chose from what Amazon deemed as the best solution. But keep in mind – in looking at the other cameras (and actually ordering a couple), I found they are the EXACT SAME model numbered device. The only differences are what you get in the bundle (batteries, microphone, light, etc), what version the Firmware is (this one was 20180815-24) and who you got it from.
The model of camera was the KicTeck HDV-534KM.
The Shotgun Microphone
Along with the camera is a shotgun microphone model M101. Just like with the camera, you can get this mic from other companies. Andoer M101 is a good example. This microphone can retail at about $20 on it’s own.
The mic is a Cardioid X2 with a frequency response of 30Hz – 16 kHz. Low cut 80Hz, and has a +20 db boost, along with -10 db. The microphone runs on a CR2032 battery, and comes with a cord to attach to the camera.
The Macro/Wide Lens
Along with the microphone, and 2 batteries, you get a lens attachment with stepping ring (so it will fit the size and thread of the camera). The lens attachment has two pieces – one for close-up videos and photos, and the wide angle attachment that adds about .39x to your recording area.
The 37MM HD Lens cost about $30.
KicTeck HDV-534KM Pros and Cons
Now onto the main camera itself. Inside is a 13 Megapixel Ultra HD CMOS camera sensor. Sounds impressive, but the device is also found in many phones, action cameras, and other devices. The camera overall has a look and feel like it was made in 2012-2014.
KicTeck Photo
Not True 4k – Picture Quality
The video resolutions are 2560×1440, which is not full 4k, but Quad 4k. It’s scales up to 4k resolutions easily in post production. It also only captures at 24 fps (30 fps in 2k and 60 fps in 1080p). The sensor works best in outdoor or high-light settings. It does has night vision for low-light situations.
Optical vs Digital Zoom
This camera has only Digital zoom of 16x. The zoom works well, but will be more pixelated if you use it.
Watch Your SD Card
The camera takes both the SD and TF cards (mini SD). I have found the camera to be very finicky when it comes to what card it uses. A newer SD card will lock up in the camera, especially if you are recording in 4k. Once I inserted a Class 10 -1 card (90 MB/s rate), it recorded without issue.
WiFi Works Well
These cameras have a simple Wifi option that works with an iOS or Android. I was able to connect the phone and use the app without too much issue. There is a lag, so watch out when starting and stopping video – especially since the camera’s display will not be viewable.
Live Streaming
Using an App that comes with the camera, you can live stream through the USB 2.0 cable (that also doubles as the charging cable). It emits a simple 720p video. The camera isn’t supported in other programs (including Skype, or the Camera app in Windows 10).
I did connect to the mini-HDMI cable through a capture card. If the USB power was plugged in, the camera would display a flashing charge icon on the screen that I could not get off.
The video – just like with recording – was dark in an average lit room. It shined best outside, but I did see some flares and ghost images from reflections, no matter which lens I had in.
Price
When I purchased the camera, it was at $149, but then jumped up to $221. If it would have been at $221 to begin with, I might have not planned this review. With $70 in accessories (mic, lens, 2 batteries), The camera accounts for $150. I feel this camera is best at under $100, and $149 was reasonable. Another branded version from Mbuynow was $179
Overall KicTeck 4K Ultra HD
The overall features of 4k on this camera are not really worth it for the $221 price tag. The camera is sub-par at best, but might improve with tweaks to the firmware. It’s a sturdy design, with all buttons working properly. The shotgun mic works well in different situations, but focus is a big issue.
The better option would be to purchase an older camera. A good 4k name-brand camera will be at least twice the price, but also give you at least 30 fps.

I went on a photowalk with Johan Lund, we had a great time discussing various subjects and even took some photos
I was never a fan of the Apple ear buds. They never fit my ears right. Every 20 minutes, I had to remove to give my ear canal a break.
So when the new Airpods Pro came out with rubber tip, I was hoping for a pair of ear buds that would not stretch my ears.
So far, I’m not disappointed.
Unboxing the Airpods Pro
The initial unboxing was straightforward. Inside, you receive the AirPods in a charging case – which can be charged with included cable, or through a compatible qi charging base.
Keep in mind, no wireless charger is included. You can get one here.
Since the rubber tips can interchange with smaller and larger ones, Apple includes 2 extra pair in the case. You can text or the best pair in the ear tip finder, in settings.
Pairing with an iPhone, iPad, more
To begin with, you must have a iOS 10 compatible device or better to connect. I tried to connect my iPod (iOS9), and although Apple saw the headphones, it was unable to connect.
In most cases, you open up the charging case next to the phone or iPad, and it can detect the Airpods. If not, go into Bluetooth settings, and pair.
On the back of the case is a button that, if held down for a few seconds, will pair new devices.
I also connected to my Windows machine, which I include results in the video.
Airpods Pro Settings
Once you pair the device, you can assist settings to your preference. This can included how the headphones nose cancel, which bud microphone to use, and even what the button press does.
Put the ear buds in, then run the tip test. The Airpods will determine if you need the larger, or smaller rubber tips by listening to noise leakage In the ear.
You can get false-positive results if the pod is not fully seated in your ear.
Cons of Airpods Pro
The biggest issue is using the microphone for recording audio and video. Simply, Apple won’t do it. You’ll have to revert to the old corded headphones, or another plugin microphone system if you need an external microphone.
Otherwise
Otherwise, the first 24 hours of wearing, I am relatively pleased in it’s use. I could wear it for hours without having to rub my ears. I could even wear it while sleeping, and not have the Airpods drive into my head.
Airpods Pro Specs
With dual beaming microphones, inward facing microphone, force sensor, and motion sensor, these headphones can detect insertion into an ear, along with fit and audio leakage.
Over 4 hours of listening time on one charge, with up to 24 hours of listening with case re-charging.
Force sensor gives you options to pause, skip, and do other functions. This includes turning on Transparent mode – allowing you to turn off noise cancelling so you can hear what’s around you.
Get AirPods Pro
For $249, you can get your pair at Apple, over at Best Buy, or Amazon. You also get 1 year of Apple Care, and purchase a second. This does not cover loss of AirPods.

Kieran P drew some of his favorite Marvel superheroes, plus some "lil conflusterators" (his own interpretation of several of the comic book heroes).
Robyn & Robert painted pumpkins and hand cut lanterns with iconic symbols from Batman, including Joker, Batman, Robin, and the Batmobile.
