James Randi, observing your correspondent with a skeptical eye.

Nearly every year, I check out the list of fellow speakers at the upcoming Conference On World Affairs and circle one or two names with an orange highlighter. The color has a simple but important meaning:

"Try very, very hard not to get so excited or intimidated about meeting this person that you wind up acting like a total jackass."

Now, then. I am indeed a geek, but through lots of observation, experimentation, and plain old hard work on my part, I've managed to get a rudimentary but functional suite of social skills up and running. So the "don't act like a total jackass" software is normally a background process that never needs to become the frontmost app, so to speak.

But I've enjoyed Randi's work since I was a mere slip of a lad. I saw him on TV, and I really liked him. Then, I used my birthday money to special-order a copy of "Flim-Flam!" at the mall bookstore. And I freaking loved him. His whole approach of thinking carefully and questioning what you're observing hit a profound chord with me that continues to resonate.

So I knew that if I didn't keep a careful eye on my Geekout gauge during the Conference, there was a very real chance that I would do or say something which in future would only be referred to a "...the Incident."

(...and even then, with an involuntary shudder.)

But Randi is a v.friendly dude who quickly puts you at ease, and I greatly enjoyed hanging out with him from time to time during the week.

Actually, on Tuesday the hanging out bordered on stalking...though most of it wasn't of my doing. We spoke on the same panel in the morning, then we had lunch together in the speakers' lunchroom, and then Phil Plait (aka the Bad Astronomer, a recent Boulder immigrant) had both of us over for dinner. It was a fab night full of great food and conversation. And a mentalist trick that still has me pacing and muttering, trying to figure out how (the bloody hell) Randi worked it.

Well, anyway. This was taken at Phil's house.

[In response to regular requests by fellow Randi fans: this photo is Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike. By all means, go ahead and use this elsewhere. No need to ask permission...all I ask is that you credit me.]

This is the river after the first big rapid in Kithulgala rafting area.

About a year ago I eBayed one of these Mamiya 645 cameras; but it turned out that its winding gears were shot and it would sometimes overlap frames, so I had to return it. I was also surprised at what chunky cameras these are--actually larger than a 6x6 Hasselblad.

Still, I got some promising shots with that camera and felt rather sad to lose it.

After hovering over a bunch of auctions, I finally snagged another one at the price I was willing to pay. Considering that a wedding photographer of the 1980s would have paid a couple thousand dollars for a body, lens, prism and film insert, it's totally crazy that you can get all that for about $200 today if you're patient.

The 80mm f/1.9 is on loan from the awesome Andy, who has been getting some great stuff using the razor-thin depth of field of that lens. I'm kind of a geek for shallow depth of field so that's something I'm really looking forward to playing with more.

On the right is my 55mm moderate wide-angle, which equates to about a 34mm lens on 135 format.

1. Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch has been immensely popular ever since its launch and it looks like that popularity shows no signs of slowing down. Thanks to many big titles and a great new design, Nintendo’s latest console is on every kid’s wish list this holiday season. Probably for seasons to come as well.

It’s unlike the other consoles on the market. At home, the Nintendo Switch rests in the dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in your living room. If you want to game on the go, just lift the Nintendo Switch from the dock and you can instantly transition to handheld mode to take it with you.

There are over a thousand games available on Nintendo Switch, so there’s a game for every occasion. Single player, multiplayer, it’s all here. The detachable Joy-Con controller allows for many play styles. One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand, two players can each take one, or you can use multiple Joy-Cons for larger player numbers.

With games like Super Mario Odyssey, Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Fortnite and many more, the Switch seems like a Christmas miracle for fun.

2. Amazon Echo Dot

If you want to make your home a smart home and get in on the home automation craze you want Alexa to be your virtual personal assistant. Preferably in the 3rd generation of the Amazon Echo Dot. The Echo Dot is how Alexa is able to control your smart devices and make your life easier for you.

It connects to all kinds of devices. It can play music, let you watch videos, answer questions, read the news, set alarms, keep up to date on social media, play games, control smart home devices and much much more. This device is your ticket to upgrading your home into a smart home. Welcome to the future. It’s basically a helping hand into the 21st century.

You can also call and message almost anyone hands-free. Or instantly connect with other rooms in your home, for things like making an announcement to every room with a compatible Echo device. Pretty neat right?

The list of things that it can do is growing all of the time and Alexa is always getting smarter and adding new skills.

Use your voice to turn the heat down, turn off lights and appliances and much more. The possibilities are endless.

We really love the HyperX Cloud Revolver S Gaming Headset. Not only is it comfortable, but it also has excellent all-around sound and design. Those first two qualities are among the most important considerations when you are gaming for hours on end, while the latter is just icing on the cake. It features excellent 7.1-channel surround sound, through Dolby’s digital signal processor and features a detachable mic.

It isn’t often that you get this kind of sound and comfort in one headset. It also has a steel frame that makes this headset very durable, which again makes it worth the purchase, even though it’s a bit pricey comparatively. It was designed in Germany and it certainly shows. Everything from the outer earcup design to the red memory foam showing through on the inside commands your attention and catches your eye.

It also features next-generation directional 50mm drivers, USB Plug N Play Dolby Surround 7.1 compatible with PC, PS4, PS4 Pro and other devices with USB audio support. It’s also has a 3.5mm plug. It has you covered on nearly all platforms.

The detachable noise-cancellation microphone delivers clearer voice quality and reduced background noise, so you can expect quality in-game chats that don’t suck. It’s also TeamSpeak and Discord certified, and compatible with Skype and Mumble. This headset has you covered.

The HyperX Cloud Revolver S is one of the best gaming headsets out there at the moment. Even though it’s more expensive than the competition at $70.95, you really get your money’s worth.

4. PS4 Pro

This Christmas give them the gift of gaming. Sure you could choose an XBox One or Nintendo’s Switch, but the PS4 Pro is simply the best. Sony’s powered-up PS4 Pro will be a stunning treat for 4K TV owners who game.

It’s always a showdown between Sony’s PS4 and Microsoft’s XBox, but the PS4 has the clear edge in this fight. Which is why it outsells Microsoft’s console. The PS4 Pro has great hardware, great games, and a huge online presence. And there are always killer games in the pipeline. When Sony updated the PS4, it added support for 4K and HDR technologies. There are also advances in frame rate thanks to better processing speeds. Your game is going to look cleaner, sharper and smoother. Better than ever before.

If you’re giving the gift of a PS4 Pro this holiday season, you have a lot of options. You can buy the console bundled with popular games, or buy the console itself. Either way, the recipient of this gift is going to love Santa this year. It’s the gift that keeps on giving with awesome games, many of which are exclusive to the console.

Of course, I have to put in some music tech into this list. Out of all the products I’ve played with, I enjoy the Roland drum system the most. This is the TD-1DMK – a great drum set for the beginner, or for someone practicing.

Features include a brain module that can connect to a PC, 256 notes polyphony, Roland’s V-drum mesh head system to make it feel like a real drum, 10 onboard coaching functions, and an all-in-one rack that can be put in a corner fairly easy.

I personally own the TD-50 module, which offers much more, but in this case, the $700 price tag is a little more digestible.

You will have to purchase a base drum pedal and drum throne separate. But with this kit, you get the triggers for bass, snare, 3 toms, 3 cymbals, and hi-hat.

And the Roland sounds give you drum sets, latin percussion, orchestra instruments, and more at your fingertips.

6. Samsung Q9FN QLED 65 Inch Smart TV

We are pretty confident that we can say that the Samsung Q9FN QLED 65″ Smart TV is going to be the best TV you’ve ever owned. This 65″ smart TV is much brighter and more colorful than the equivalent model from the year before. It also uses Full Array Local Dimming instead of edge-lit LED lighting for stunning depth and detail. You can expect a picture quality that rivals OLED.

This set also has Q HDR EliteMax, which is a maximum High Dynamic Range experience designed exclusively for the Q9 to ensure the best picture. This TV is designed to look beautiful by minimizing wires and mounting flush to the wall. The idea is that it blends perfectly with your decor and they’ve certainly succeeded there. It looks at home in any environment and becomes a part of it.

There’s also a new Ambient Mode that allows you to use the TV to your advantage when setting moods in your home or getting info. It allows you to display decorative content, useful information, your photos, and even background music when you want it.

Bixby Voice is a feature that will help you find streaming and live TV shows with a universal guide, OneRemote and voice assistance.

This set is virtually bezel-free, which gives you more image and doesn’t distract your focus on the incredible picture quality. And if you love gaming, you are going to experience your games like never before when playing them on the Q9.

7. MSI GS65 Stealth Thin Ultra Gaming Laptop

If you’re looking for the best gaming laptop that you can buy this year, you’ll want to turn your attention toward the more than capable MSI GS65 Stealth THIN Ultra-Thin Gaming Laptop. The GS65 Stealth Thin has everything you want in a gaming laptop. It’s all about convenience and portability in a form-factor that’s light and thin enough for your backpack and easy to carry if you don’t use a backpack.

This is a laptop that is powerful enough to play the latest games at high or max settings so it has everything we want for gaming. It features a sleek matte black aluminum body with gold accents, without being too flashy. At 18mm thick, and with 4.9mm thin bezels, it’s a tad smaller than most 15-inch laptops, which is not a bad thing at all.

Other features include an Intel Core i7-8750H, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q GPU, 16GB DDR4-2400MHz RAM, 15.6-inch FHD (1,920 x 1,080) wide-view 144Hz screen, 512GB M.2 SSD storage and it weighs just 4.14 lbs. This laptop also packs in a keyboard from SteelSeries that’s RGB-lit, a responsive touchpad, and a webcam.

That keyboard gives you some nice granular control over your keyboard illumination using the SteelSeries Engine 3. If you light lights on your keyboard this is going to be a real treat for you.

A laptop like this will let you spend countless hours gaming without any of the hangups that other rigs would suffer. It’s a sleek powerhouse that’s built for fun. At the moment you won’t find a better gaming laptop.

8. Amazon Fire HD8 Tablet

For those looking for a budget tablet, the Amazon Fire HD 8 is the best deal around. It delivers up to 10 hours of battery life and packs in a vibrant 8″ HD display. It is primarily designed with entertainment in mind. This Alexa-enabled tablet will make a great gift for adults or kids alike this Christmas. The Fire HD 8 is great quality for its size and the price and Amazon has tons of apps that you can browse for free and it already comes with the standard ones.

Other features include a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor, 1.5 GB of RAM, and Dolby Audio. 2x. If you like using your voice, you can use the Alexa hands-free mode to pause videos, play music, open apps, get sports scores, the weather, and much more.

At no extra cost, Prime members get unlimited access to over a thousand books and magazines, millions of songs, and thousands of movies and TV episodes. It also has a Show Mode that lets you transform your tablet to an immersive, full-screen Alexa experience that is optimized for visibility across the room. You can also call or message almost anyone hands-free, or make video calls. People really love Amazon’s Fire tablets, because you can do so much with them for a budget price. That makes it a great Christmas gift for several people on your list.

9. Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus

The Samsung Galaxy S9 is the best choice around for Android fans looking for a new smartphone. It’s a big phone that offers the very best smartphone features that users want.

The Super AMOLED 6.2-inch display is among the best around at the moment. You can expect great colors and a great viewing experience. You’ll also get a 3,500mAh battery in the Plus model and a camera with dual-aperture capability for some excellent pics.

Even 9 months out from its launch the S9 Plus remains one of the best phones out there. The big highlights here are its ability to take low-light photos and it’s big 6.2-inch curved ‘Infinity’ display. But that’s not all it offers. There’s also the rear dual-lens camera, which gives it some nice telephoto capabilities.

Also, the primary lens can capture super-slow-motion video at 960 frames per second. If that’s not your thing, you can use the 8MP front-facing camera to paint the scene with various AR Emoji props and masks, but honestly, that’s probably the least impressive thing about this phone, just a bonus.

If you are looking for a smartphone for someone special this Christmas, or for yourself, you can’t go wrong with the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus.

10. DJI Mavic 2 Pro Drone

DJI’s original Mavic Pro made waves when it arrived back in September 2016. In fact, it changed the drone world forever with its foldable design and great specs. Now the company has introduced the Mavic 2 Pro, which is the first to be outfitted with a Hasselblad camera.

This is the jewel of DJI’s drone lineup thanks to the camera’s one-inch sensor. You can shoot 4K at 30fps and 20-megapixel still images with this high flyer. And it is still compact and light, making it easy to carry it in your backpack or bag. The battery life also beats its predecessor. Plus it has more sensors for obstacle avoidance. It is simply one of the best drones you can buy today.

If you’re looking for a drone for someone on your list this year, this is the one to buy. It weighs just 297g and measures 91 x 84 x 214mm when folded. Other features include 8GB of built-in storage, a microSD slot for cards up to 128GB, and the ability to download footage to your computer via the USB-C port, which is also how it gets firmware updates by the way. You’ll also get about 30 minutes of flight per charge, which is awesome.

11. Jabra Elite 65t Alexa Enabled True Wireless Earbuds with Charging Case

If you want a great alternative to Apple’s AirPods, the Jabra Elite 65t will fit the bill. They are wireless earphones for every occasion. While most of Jabra’s offering focus on the gym and sports, these good-looking earbuds are made for everyday use. They look great, they sound great and you also get five hours of use from a full charge, plus an extra two from the charging case. That’s not bad at all.

This is one of the most popular sets of wireless earbuds on the market right now and it’s easy to see why. They may be designed more for music and Netflix rather than running, but they still stay in place in your ears as well as those other athletic-oriented models do.

With the Jabra Sound+ app you get even more out of these earbuds. You can personalize your experience, choose your voice assistant, customize your music profile, modify how much nearby noise you want to hear, keep track of your charge level, and more.

4-microphone technology ensures that call and voice quality is superb, giving you effective wind noise reduction on all of your calls.

12. Oculus Rift

You know all of that fun stuff that you do in video games? It’s even cooler in VR. And the best VR headset around right now is the Oculus Rift. And no it doesn’t require an entire room. If you have a gaming PC with some pretty powerful specs you are going to have a lot of fun.

It has a sleek and comfortable design, plus the Touch Controllers are a big part of what makes this VR experience the best. They are the most comfortable in the PC VR headset market. The positioning of the buttons and analog sticks are perfect so that movements, like grabbing things or holding a golf club, feel very natural. And if you want to create a more immersive experience, you can also buy a pair of Oculus’ attachable earphones and you will be lost in VR for as long as you like.

You’ll also have at your disposal a library to over 500 games, including titles from big-time game developers like Insomniac Games, Ubisoft and Harmonix. In fact, there is a constant flow of new content coming all of the time, so it makes sense to choose the Oculus and put it under the Christmas Tree this year.

Update: FireFox 3.1 added color management support. Chrome doesn't have it yet. See this article (under Off-color Remarks section).

01.27.10

Update: This article on Utata that does a good job of explaining color spaces.

09.08.06

::::

I've been bit by the color management bug. I've always noticed that the color of my photos vary quite a bit during their journey from photoshop to flickr... colors that are rich & saturated will sometimes appear washed out, faded, or desaturated.

It turns out there's a few factors involved (for my specific set-up):

—I've been capturing and editing in the Adobe RGB (1998) color space

—No web browsers (except Safari) support color management at this point.**

Which basically means the browsers don't read the embedded color profile; they just automatically assume all images are in the sRGB color space (more about that later).

—I'm editing photos on a 20" G5 imac (now using MBP + cinema display), which, besides having a very bright, high-contrast LCD screen, has (up to now) been using the Apple ColorSync monitor profile, which uses a 1.8 gamma (produces lighter images, versus the PC 2.2 gamma standard, which is darker).

In an ideal world, all web browsers would offer color management support, all end-users of flickr would embed color profiles in their photos (or have their editing software do it by default), and no one would spill soda pop on the seats of the bus, right? But it ain't so. Firefox (or IE, Camino, Opera, etc) doesn't care if your photo is in the Adobe RGB color space, and doesn't care if it converts it properly to sRGB. So what's the big deal— what's so bad about sRGB? There isn't anything wrong with sRGB... it does its job fairly well, all things considered. But it does have some limitations— it's a profile that's basically an average of the all low-end CRTs from the mid-nineties, so its primary purpose is lowest-common denominator compatibility, not accurate color reproduction of a wide color gamut. So it has a much smaller color gamut than, say, Adobe RGB (1998). In other words, it displays less color, but insures broader compatibility. More about sRGB here on wikipedia.

So I've made some changes in my photo processing workflow to compensate. The workflow goes something like this:

1) RAW images captured in camera

2) RAW images imported into LightRoom, processed, and exported to Photoshop

3) Photoshop is set to embed Adobe RGB profile in all images

4) Final product is soft-proofed (Windows Gamma 2.2 sRGB) then converted to sRGB via a programmed action (but original is saved in Adobe RGB for printing purposes)

5) .jpg embedded with sRGB profile is uploaded to flickr

I'm sure I'll be tweaking things around over the next couple weeks as I learn more. But it's a start.

For more in-depth info, check out Real World Color Management (Bruce Fraser, Chris Murphy, Fred Bunting).

(**= correction, pointed out by dcJohn: OmniWeb (for the Mac) also supports CM)

Yaaaay.

Again: yaaaaaaaay.

Momentary geekout here: I am so so so happy this didn't suck. And I'm happy I ran into flickr people at the theater. And I'm happy Zachary Quinto was Spock.

That is all.

A nice fellow. He let me hold three arrow heads in his collection, one from Crecy, one from Poitiers, and one from Agincourt! How cool is that? BIG geekout moment for yours truly I can tell you!

Welcome to the 5 tech things you should know. This is a reboot to a show I did years ago. We’ve revamped the show for a more evergreen feel, but I hope this will be a great way for you to understand what’s happening in Technology.

We’ll also be running a contest every week. This week, we’re giving away a $50 Amazon card to one lucky viewer! More information later in the show!

The foldable era is here, baby! In the next month or two, you’ll see foldable devices galore. I’ve already reported about the Samsung Fold, which is out now. But other foldable devices are coming just as fast.

We’ll show you how to navigate through fact and fiction so you can get the best device possible. So with that said, let’s get to your five tech things!

How the device folds

There will be two types of foldables – single screen, and dual screen fold. Microsoft, for example, is launching the Surface Duo, more than just a phone, it’s a 2 screen booklet that is simply a mini-PC for your note-taking, game-playing, web-surfing, Insta-gramming, and a whole bunch more need.

The Microsoft Surface Duo is 2- 5.6 inch screens that fold out like any laptop would. You can run in full tablet, laptop style, tent-style, or phone style.

The dual screens mean there’s a break in-between. These tablets won’t be able to do continuous screen, because the break might cause issues in touch, and slide.

For example, if you want to play Candy Crush, the divider could cause issues in trying to get that “Candy-licious” screen on one try.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold is out, and in this case, it’s a continuous screen. The fold is a $2k phone with an outer screen when closed, and the tablet mode screen.

Check out my review of the Galaxy Fold

Since the screen is continuous, you’ll see a “rib” in the middle. This is by design, so the screen has some leeway, and won’t break, or cause dead pixel areas.

Samsung has run tests to make sure the screen will last at least 3 years worth of folding.

The other part is that hinge on the outer side. It make the phone thicker, but more durable if you decide you want to fold it the other way.

Don’t fold it the other way…

Glass vs. Plastic

In order for the continuous screen to fold, it cannot be made of glass. We haven’t found that technology, yet.

In the Samsung case, the outer screen is glass. Huawei Mate is another continuous fold screen. These screens will most likely have a special scratch resistant coating, but it won’t be as strong as a glass screen will.

That is why you might want to consider a screen that folds into itself, rather than outside. The Xiaomi, and Royal FlexPai are two examples.

Those are nice for a tent mode, but not nice if your keys share the same pocket as your phone.

Meanwhile, LG’s upcoming foldable will be dual screen, just like the Surface Duo. One screen can become a keyboard or joystick, and it’s possible we’ll see split-screen games and apps for these specific devices.

Welcome Back Motorola RAZR

Did you have a Motorola RAZR phone? Do you miss it? Aw. Memories…

Well, it could see a rebirth, as a foldable. This would also be a continuous fold screen, so it will flip out to a 5.2 inch screen like your phone is.

These phones were also called “Clamshell” phones, so a clamshell foldable could be in your future. After all, Motorola is not the only one planning for this type of technology.

Could phones become Wearable?

Folding screens are not a new thing. I saw screen bending technology back over 10 years ago. Granted, at that time it was for computers and laptops, but now with lower LED power needs, it’s easily imagined for phones, watches, headbands, and however you might need it. (graphic)

We could even see future digital signage with mobility and bendability to it.

Will Apple have a foldable?

The quick answer is – YES. But not right now. Don’t expect iPhone 12 and 13 – or whatever they call it in the future – to have the technology.

There are two factors that Apple would probably want to see to change their minds. First would be a screen that is as durable as with the current iPhones. Otherwise, foldable glass.

Or something with a good protective coating that can also give you the “Retina” touchscreen you desire.

The iPad would have a better chance of folding way before the phone. That is the second reason why you might not see a foldable iPhone.

In fact, it might be a good way for Apple to kill off the lower end Macbooks, especially if it can be folded into a laptop style, and have a whopping 26 inch screen completely folded out.

Cameras

Face it – the majority of people buy phones for one reason only. To make a better phone call…

–Oh, excuse me. I got a call – hello? No, I don’t want a free cruise to the Bahamas for extending my car insurance and sending $5,000 in for my 3 million inheritance. Thank you.

Actually, it’s about the camera. And in some cases, these foldable phones will have more cameras attached than you can ever imagine.

The screen will definitely be a second-place to how that camera works. That’s the basis on the new iPhone 11 Pro – a camera that could be a DSLR killer.

Processor, including a GPU is also important. We’ve starting moving from quad core, into Octa-core, and – uh, what’s the word for 16 cores? Hexa-Decagonal?

But high quality photos and video with enough storage to make a Storage Wars bidder want to bid high will be what people will notice most.

To keep up with this feature, my friends at Uber-Gizmo have developed the “Uber-G Camera Benchmark“. This is a score for phones and how they perform in daylight, night mode, zoom, Ultra-wide mode, and more.

And this is for any phone, so, for example, the Apple iPhone 11 Pro has a score of 177, with high marks in daylight and night time shooting.

As each phone comes in, you’ll see scores for them here. It’s a great reference if you’re looking for the right camera for the right need.

One last thing to note is Operating System. Whether you want Android, iOS, or another OS on your phone.

Of course, the majority of foldables will be Android-based, but different flavors could be coming out.

For example, the Samsung Android OS is different than the flagship Google Pixel 3 phone. If Amazon makes a foldable Fire tablet, their OS will be a “walled garden” Android device that only wants you to use approved apps from Amazon’s app store.

And yes, I know you can side-load the device. I have.

So let me be the first to welcome you into the foldable era! Your phone will get smaller, but bigger.

Ah, Thanksgiving. That day where you watch football, yell at the TV, yell at the family, and stuff your face. Unless IF your making that turkey, inviting family and friends over, getting everything ready for that inevitable day of fights and heartbreak…

.. you know, just like the pilgrims planned it.

And Thanksgiving does get celebrated in other countries. It might be on a different day. You know when Canada’s thanksgiving is. Right? (October 14)

China celebrates the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. Japan, Vietnam, and South Korea celebrate the day of harvest.

And Germany has “Erntedankfest” in the first Sunday of October. So it’s Octoberfest, AND Erntedankfest.

So before you get that tofurky – you know, because nobody eats turkey nowadays – before you download that Yule log app to your Roku- and before you make your strategic plan to hit all the Black Friday sales after kicking everyone out of the house, let’s look at 5 tech things you should know about planning for that awesome Thanksgiving day.

Brought to you by Sur La Table. Get your thanksgiving items at your local Sur La Table. Check it out here.

Planning the perfect sports zone

OK, I watch football. #GoPackers. But my sports cave is really just the TV in my living room, and the iPad. For some of you, it might be a decked out basement with 5 big screens, 3 beers on tap, full bar, and comfy recliner that nobody else can sit in.

Now if you only have a bland living room, and want those sports-driven family members to be happy, you can do a couple things to make it more sports-like.

It’s a great way to justify getting a new TV!

If you don’t have a 4K monitor, I recommend either theTCL Roku TV . Both have a great picture, come with apps for TV and movies, and have HDMI ARC, so you can attach a soundbar for a better sound experience.

Second and third screen experiences are a lot easier nowadays. Back in Marty McFly’s day, if you wanted more than one screen, you had to put two TV’s together.

Getting Madden NFL 20 for PS4 or XBox will keep those fans interested until the next game is ready. You can also “pre-play” the matchups of the day to see if you’re a better arm chair coach than your team can be.

Additionally, a laptop directed to a scoresheet, printed roster sheets – so people know what number “HahaClintonDix” is, and some inflatable chairs for extra guests can really make this event memorable.

Cool tech to help you cook.

You don’t have to put the oven to task for all your cooking needs. Some foods can be pre-made and Stored up to a week before.

A good suvide, for example, allows you to cook food, then put them in the freezer up until a couple hours before dinner. I talked about one on Geekazine a while back.

Air fryers are more popular nowadays. They can replace other items like toasters, and microwaves. Things that air fryers excel at are fries, onion rings, chicken wings, and some even dehydrate for healthier snack choices.

I have talked about the Hestan cue earlier this year. The pans use induction cooking, and this cookware system can be used outside the kitchen. I used it in my garage to make a nice steak.

The app also serves as a step by step cooking guide to making the perfect green bean Cassirole, cranberry delight, or other great dishes. It works for all your cooking needs, whether oven, air fryer, or Hestan Cue.

Keep the stress down

As I eluded to earlier, this holiday can be fun, but stressful. Kids running around, gossip coming to a head, Someone breaks Mom’s favorite Vase…

She always says “Don’t play ball in the house…”

A good stress relieving app can help. According to Statistica, there are 2 million apps you can choose from. You might just get stress trying to find the right stress app.

Want to get everyone out of the house for a little bit while you set the table? Why not make a walking tour of your area?

GPSMYCITY is an app where you can create the tour, send via email to other phones, and they can go out for a walk while you tilt back a couple “Pumpkin Spice” coctails (BBT “It’s just rum”)

Charge up some old phones, tablets, and maybe even get a “Vintage” HP Sprocket camera and printer bundle so you have photos for scrapbooks, ornament making, and just to have fun with the photo walk.

Encouraging photos can also allow you to make a memory of the night you can put up on Facebook, or send in digital or VHS formats.

Keep pets calm with things like the Petsafe Ultrasonic indoor bark control some pheromone sprays, or even a calming collar.

Finally, there are great holiday stress relieving songs and videos you can get on your favorite media service.

Keep the Wi-Fi on

To start, I would make sure your WiFi is up to handling the traffic of all the guests. If you have a primary WiFi, or don’t want to give out your password, why not get another WIFI router to handle them? With a guest router, you can turn it on and off, set speeds, distance it from your main router to add signal strength, and the majority of devices can be connected without overloading the main router.

This GL.INet Slate router I reviewed a few months back can be set up as it’s own Wi-Fi signal, can be tethered to your home network or a cell phone, and is under $70. You can also take this with you on travel, so you browsing experience is safer when connecting to hotel wireless. Get the Slate Here.

Keep in mind, you can easily plug a router into another router. It won’t speed up your upload/download speeds, but it also won’t bring down your primary router because of too many connections.

One more thing

A good video conferencing device is a great way to bring in friends and family that cannot make the trip to your house. Portal by Facebook is one way to do that Then you have Echo Show and Google Hub

Heck, it’s also a great way to talk with people in the other room. A great way to connect…

Tech to make the turkey turn out oh so good.

I’ve used this oven thermometer for years. Since then, Weber has acquired the product. iGrill was meant for keeping an eye on food on the grill, or, if your deep frying that bird.

I’ve used it in the oven, in the slow cooker, and on the stove top so I know what temperature the meat is at. I can bluetooth connect this item so I don’t have to eagle-eye the oven.

Hestan makes a the 36 inch gas grill with infrared burners, and rotisserie, so you can cook the bird outside. It’s a bit expensive at $6,600. But these cooking systems also can be used year-round.

And you can be a little bit of a show-off to others.

And don’t forget that carving knife. The Cuisinart CEK-40 is a great electric knife that won’t break the bank. It’s not cordless, because that will knock the price up to $180. It is a top selling knife on Amazon.

Haven't really shot anything lately so just adding to the collection here for posting sake. =p

It’s no secret that I have gotten some opportunities to travel to South Korea. I would like to thank my friends at Aving.net for the opportunity. I have spent a good amount of time in Seoul, and surrounding provinces. We even took a boat down the Han river, learned to cook with Jiny, and visited the Coex mall’s Starfield Library – amongst many other things.

South Korea is home to Samsung, and LG – two of the biggest electronic manufacturers. South Korea welcomes business travelers to do business through their country. So not only can you go visit some of their iconic temples, you can get your electronic fix as well.

I put together a list of 5 things to do tech-wise. Granted, the list was different when I started. The K-Pop experience was closed, and the Robot museum will not be open until 2022 – but will be built by robots starting in 2020. So I had to make changes to the list.

Missing is the LG Electronics park, which I didn’t have a chance to get to. But I did find many other things you can do to stay occupied.

Also, we are sticking close to Seoul in this list. If you want to hop a train, you can visit the DJI arena, Robot land in Changwon, and more.

5. Gangnam Style – Samsung, VR, Apple Store

Gangnam is a great place to start, not only because they have a stage where you can re-create the Youtube sensation “Gangnam Style’ by Psy, but also because this is a young part of Seoul. Lots of shopping is here, including the Coex center I mentioned earlier.

Samsung D’Light is a great place to start. It’s one of Samsung’s corporate offices, but the bottom two levels contain shopping, food (including just opened Johnny Rocket’s), and the Samsung D’Light store – 3 levels of products, concepts, and things to explore. I highlighted it back in September when I was there learning about the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

There are many PC cafes, and VR zones in Seoul. It is a great place to escape, and the prices are very competitive.

Finally, Gangnam is home to the first Apple store in Korea. I found it by following all the knitted tree cozies.

4. T.UM at SKT

South Korean Telecom (SKT) is one of Korea’s companies that supplies phone and Internet services. They host T.UM, which is a concept room that shows us how we might be living life in 30 years. From self-driving cars, robots, hyper-loops, and more.

To visit this attraction, you must register. English tours are available, but not as much as Korean tours. So you might want to schedule this trip first, as days are limited.

3. Need Camera gear? Go to Seoul Plaza

Just down from Seoul Plaza, you have two attractions – Deoksugung, and the Sungnyemun gate (of the Fortress Wall). Across from the gate is a camera lover’s dream. This area is home to multiple camera vendors with gear old and new.

If you need a new lens for your DSLR, looking for some vintage gear, a new tripod, or anything else for your photo or video camera, you will find it here.

I picked up a new monopod, and a couple other camera pieces for great prices. And they were willing to haggle with me (so don’t be afraid to do that).

When I was done, I simply walked over a couple blocks and visited the night markets. Many vendors down the back alley ways selling clothes, food, bags, and other gear.

2. DJI Flagship in Mapu-go

This episode is sponsored by DJI, as the video was shot on a DJI Osmo Pocket. Get your Osmo Pocket here!

Although DJI is a Chinese company, they have a pretty good flagship store in the Mapu-go part of Seoul. Here, you can check out all the products, test fly a drone or two, and learn more about the company.

It’s also near the college, so there is a great evening presence to test out your new devices. The mall area features performers of K-Pop, magic, and more, lots of night-time shopping, and some very interesting sugar-craft strawberries.

1. Yunseong Electronics and Geek Heaven

If you need ANY electronic item, this is where you go to get it. Computers, networking equipment, P.A. equipment, Karaoke machines, and much more.

This area is more than one store. Inside each building is a maze of shops and vendors, selling whatever you need. It reminds me of those touring computer flea markets in the 90’s and 00’s for people looking to build their first computer.

Cross the street, and you are at “Korea’s Largest Game Distributor”. Of course, it’s more than games – there are many geek needs that get filled in this area. Comics, figurines, collectables, and much more.

And if you need a used phone or tablet, walk down the other corridor to many vendors with great prices on a mobile device.

Going to Korea? What You Need to Know

First of all, Google Maps is pretty much useless. Download Naver Map. This will give you english versions when possible, and better directions around the city.

Korean Won is about 100-1. Therefore, you can feel like a rich person carrying 100,000 won with you at any given time.

We took “Line 2” for most of this trip. Trains are easy to use once you get the idea. Average train ride is $1.25 (as of 2019).

There is no Uber, Lyft, or any other ride-share. Cabs are 3 colors: orange is a cab company, silver is independent, and black cabs cater to Americans (and might cost more, but try to haggle with them if they are waiting around for business).

Busses are Red (express bus), Blue (for when you have to travel from one side of Seoul to another), and Green (short line bus).

No need to tip. In fact, ask to get Duty free info so you can get money back.

You should really learn some of the language, but many can speak a basic form of English. A good resource to learn Korean is KoreanClass101.com.

Korea has excellent Internet. I use PureVPN for my secure connections to important sites. With my GL.iNet Slate, I can connect safely across all my devices.

Look out honey, cos I'm using technology....

Jam Factory man about town & design warlock Gav Strange launched his new quintet of Droplet vinyl toys last Saturday, complete with a batch of 50 customised versions from various art & design goons from up & down the country. He sent me over an Illustrator file to make some sort of animation & this is what I did to sexify it with C4D & AE.

"Don't cross the streams!"

Straight after I broadcast Zero-G's 1000th episode (27/10/2014) I was invited into the ABC's Southbank Studios to be a guest on Rafael Epstein's Drive Show to chat about the birthday celebrations.

Never one to waste a cosplay opportunity, I asked if we could nip around to the mini-recording booth studios, affectionately known as "TARDIS"s, to do a bit of a photoshoot. Of course, I had props along (phaser and sonic screwdriver) in anticipation, and was wearing my ubergeek badge cloak from the Triple R party.

Rafael was quite cluey about matters genre, and I enjoyed seeing "Aunty's" studios yet again, as I've been there several times, including being in a couple of Sci-Fi quiz shows hosted by Michael Cathcart.

Insta360 was as Cine Gear 2019, showing off their new Titan camera – a $15,000 VR camera that can shoot up to 11K. I took this opportunity to also really look at the Insta360 One X.

About the Insta360

This is a consumer camera that can do up to 5.7K video in 360 video format. In fact, we recorded the video using this, along with my DJI Osmo Pocket for 2D video.

The One X Action camera also captures 18 MP photos. You can capture both video and photos on the device (with MicroSD card) or connect to the Insta360 app so you can record right to your phone via WiFi or cable (cable will be faster)

The app also allows for previews and adjustments to the camera. The App also can make edits and adjustments. It can give you a world view, or trim down the video for Facebook, Instagram, and more.

FlowState Stabilization keeps the video as stable as possible. Even if you turn the camera, you’ll see slight stitch lines, but the camera is keeping from majorly shaking.

When you look at the video, you’ll notice none of the camera, and most of your tripod or selfie stick will not be in the video.

Insta360 One X is $399 and available here. For more information, check out the Insta360 page.

Insta360 Titan with Farsight

If you’re looking for better quality, and have $15,000 laying around, the Titan is the 360 camera to go. It contains 8 cameras, using micro-4:3 lenses, and will stitch up to 11K photos or video (10K in 3D).

The camera also records 4 mono signals from 90 degrees to cover the whole camera.

You can connect with the app, and it will record your shots on 9 full-sized SD cards.

The camera also comes with Farsight – a ground-to-ground technology that allows you to control the camera from up to 1/3 of a mile away. This way, you won’t be in the shot, wires won’t be in the shot, but your content will be in the shot.

Titan can do H264 and H265 in camera, and Pro RES 422 in post stitching. it will even live stream using RTSP, RTMP, HIS, or RTMPS. The camera sends wireless, and wired signals if needed.

The $15,000 camera is available, and you can get it at B&H Video. You can also check out more info from the Insta360 Titan page.

Kieran P drew some of his favorite Marvel superheroes, plus some "lil conflusterators" (his own interpretation of several of the comic book heroes).

I went out with my friend Carole this afternoon for a walk up on the Peckforton Hills. I had my camera with me but didn't hold out any real hope of getting some decent shots, although, I did hope to find something that I could use for my 366 project. The chances of my finding a 366 shot were diminishing as rapidly as the afternoon and the light until Carole told me that her nephew, Paul Scott, was over from the States and spending a few days staying with her. She then told me he was the stuntman for Nathan Fillion the lead actor in the hit TV series Castle...I proceeded to have a geekgasm, Nathan Fillion has been one of my favourite actors since his appearance on Buffy the Vampire Slayer but more especially since his lead role in the ill-fated Firefly. Laughing at my reaction she said we were going to meet up at the Bickerton Poacher for a pint and chat. When we finally met I nearly fell out of my socks, I couldn't believe just how similar Paul is in looks to Nathan...cue me behaving like the super sci-fic geek character Leonard off The Big Bang Theory and asking him for a photograph, fortunately, he very kindly agreed to my request, unfortunately, the light was fading fast and I had to uprate the ISO to 650, most shots didn't turn out but the image above just about worked. So, my second image for the 366 came to a very happy conclusion. Once again, I'd like to say thank you to Paul for being so understanding with my total geekout and I wish him all the best in a very tough and cut-throat business, both physically and career-wise (he's been set on fire over 3000 times!).

Paul's resumé; Castle, Criminal Minds, No Ordinary Family, Ghost Whisperer, Alias, Spiderman 3, Star Trek: Enterprise, Charmed, Firefly, xXx 2, 24 and sheds loads of others!

I’m in Seoul, South Korea this week for MIK 2019-9 with some time to head to the Samsung campus. The campus is in the heart of Gangnam district, and has a walkable mall, where you can go to Samsung D’Light.

More Than Just Phones

Of course, Samsung makes a lot more than computers and mobile devices. Refrigerators, air conditioners, printers, massage chairs, beauty masks… you get the idea.

Samsung Fold 5G

The main goal was to get a first hands-on look at the fold 5G – their foldable phone.

The Fold 5G is a 9.28 oz, 4.6 inch phone. It’s actually pretty thick, but it unfolds to a 7.3 inch Android 9.0 tablet.

Inside is the Smapdragon 855 CPU, with Octa-core processor at 3×2.42 GHz. Graphics are Adreno 640. Memory contains 12 GB RAM, and 512 GB internal storage. No card slot.

4 cameras on this phone, a dual rear camera with 12 MP telephoto (f/1.5) and 16 MP ultra-wide (f/2.4). Front camera on the 4.6 side at 10 MP (f/2.2), and the front camera of the 7.3 side with 10 MP selfie (f/2.2), and 8 MP RGB depth (f/1.9).

This phone has no headphone jack – in fact the only jack is the USB-C 3.1 connector. Stereo speakers at 32-bit/384kHz, and Dolby Atmos sound (supplied by AKG). The phone will go up to about 73 dB.

The battery is a non-removable at 4,235 mAh. The iPhone 11 has a 3,969 mAh battery in comparison. Fast charging at 15W, and the new reverse wireless charge at 9W.

Features of the Samsung Fold 5G

There are 2 colors to this phone – Space Silver, and Cosmos Black.

For secure access, you have the side-mounted fingerprint reader. It was easy to login, in folded or unfolded manner.

The phone is also set up for 5G, 802.11 ax dual-band WIFI, and can be used as a hotspot. Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, and NFC support.

Thoughts of Samsung Fold 5G

The phone looks fairly sturdy. The spine makes the phone thicker, but it seems to be also fairly sturdy. Closing and opening the device did not feel flimsy.

If you look closely at the unfolded AMOLED screen, there is a small, faint rib in the middle. That is probably by design, as if it weren’t there, it might break more easily. On that point, I am not sure if that is going to get wore down over time, and we’ll hear about that being the main single-point of failure.

As a tablet, this device really shines. The graphics are pretty stunning, as I played Asphalt 9: Legends. Not as great as the gameplay cockpit with 8K QLED technology I played after, but this one fits in your pocket, and is a lot less expensive.

The last point is this is a two-screen system. If the tablet screen does break down, you still have the front screen to use as a phone. It’s a bit bulkier than the Huawei Mate X because of it.

The Price of Samsung Fold 5G

This one is hard to swallow. $2,000 US for the 5G model. Get the Fold 5G Here. And if I want it, I’ll have to buy this here, as the U.S. will only get a 4G LTE version, according to CNet.

As for the price, the onslaught of foldable phones have only just begun. You have the Huawei Mate X ($2,600), the Oppo foldable phone, Motorola Razr (which folds like the razr phone of old), LG Bendi, and more. With time, you’ll be able to get a sub – $1,000 2-in-1 device.

As for the Samsung Fold 5G, I am seriously thinking about it. ..

Samsung D’Light

As for the store experience, I was pleasantly surprised. I’ve done Samsung pop-up store experiences at SXSW, CES, and more. This one was similar, but very different.

Through the first floor experience, I got my face up on a board, went through the stations, and got my results emailed to me.

On the second floor, I got to experience a possible IoT House, exercise area, classroom, and vending station.

If you’re in South Korea, I highly recommend this as a stop to see the latest technology Samsung delivers. I truely geeked out here. #geekout

Monsterland in Mesa, AZ was a kitschy night club bar that gave geeky, gothy, nerdy people a niche place to party. January 19, 2013 was its last horrah as funding ran out. Here's the party.

Rafter's retreat, Kithulgala, Sri Lanka

Henry B's Thor tribute with a 3D hammer in the center and drawings of Thor, Loki, and Thor's hammer on the sides with facts about each.

Taylor G created this anime-style drawing that incorporates a number of favorite fandoms, including Adventure Time, Harry Potter, Homestuck, Star Wars, Pewdie Pie, Black Butler, Super Mario Bros, Doctor Who, and more.

This is probably my lamest upload ever but time for a geekout. I finally got the HTC Touch HD and it has re-sparked my love of technology. The phone is so easy and intuitive that anyone can get used to it. I know 1000s of people were so culturally duped by the iphone that they switched to O2 to get one only to be told that the 3g was coming out a few months later but Orange sent me this for free and reduced my monthly bill to £3 a month! Now has anyone tried video calling? Is it a waste of time?

While at Cine Gear 2019, I got my first look at the DJI Osmo Action – their first 4K non-gimbal action camera. We even put the SD card into that camera and took a small walk around the stage.

DJI Osmo Action

This is DJI’s first attempt to rival GoPro with a on-body action camera. The DJI Osmo Action allows for 4k60p HDR video at 100Mbps, 8x slow motion, and in-camera stabilization (called Rocksteady) to make the action smoother.

The biggest feature is the dual screen built into the camera, so you can see what you’re shooting – even if it’s yourself.

The 145 degree camera view allows for vlog-style videos to be shot. You can even control the camera with your voice – five commands to help capture without having to walk over and hit a button, or pull out the Mimo App to control.

The Action is waterproof to 11 meters, therefore, you won’t have a case fogging up, or heating up your camera. Further, it does work in environments up to -10 degrees Celsius.

One thing I miss from any of the action cams was the ability to connect an HDMI cable for streaming. But that is a different type of video work. This will be perfect for timelapse, on-board video, and much more.

The camera is $345 and can be acquired here. Also check out DJI website for more information.

Recorded with the Osmo Pocket

I did most of this video on the Osmo Pocket. Some of the content came out blurrier than I wanted. DJI has since corrected with a firmware update.
